Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these animals is NOT considered to be an ape?

Answer: Monkey

Apes include gorillas, chimpanzees, orangutans, humans, and some other species. However, monkeys are not considered to be apes. Monkeys have tails, while apes do not. However, monkeys are considered primates, just like all apes are. Chimpanzees and gorillas have been found to be intelligent species in a way similar to humans.
2. Bats are considered mammals, even though they can fly. There are many types of bats. There is one type called a vampire bat. Why is it called a vampire bat?

Answer: It feeds on blood

Of course, the vampire bat is not actually part vampire, since vampires do not exist. However, vampire bats do feed on blood of other animals. They live in Mexico, Central America, and South America. Even though it will not hunt if it is not completely dark, sunlight will not directly kill a vampire bat.
3. There are many types of cats. Two of the large ones are lions and tigers. However, there are others, including cheetahs, cougars, jaguars, and leopards. Which one of these four is NOT spotted?

Answer: Cougar

Cheetahs, jaguars, and leopards can sometimes be hard to tell apart because they are all similar in color and shape, and they are all spotted. Cougars (also called mountain lions, pumas, or panthers) have a solid design on their bodies instead of having spots. Additionally, cougars are considered small cats. Due to the differences in the hyoid bone, only small cats can purr, and only large cats can roar.
4. Which of these adjectives describes a cow?

Answer: bovine

"Bovine" is an adjective that describes a cow. It can also describe a buffalo, bison or ox, all of which are similar to cows. "Feline" describes cats, "ovine" describes sheep, and "porcine" describes pigs. Cows, also called cattle, live in most parts of the world. Some notable exceptions are large deserts and some extreme polar regions.
5. There are many types of dogs. Which one of these is NOT a type of dog?

Answer: Prairie dog

Prairie dogs, despite their name, are not actually dogs. They are rodents that live in the plains of North America. There are several species of prairie dogs, and each species lives in a different part of North America.
6. Although "elk" refers to a slightly different animal depending on whether you are in the United States or in Europe, they are both types of the same animal. What type of animal is an elk?

Answer: Deer

An elk is always a type of deer. In North America, it refers to one type of deer, which is found in the western United States and in some locations in Canada. In Europe and Asia, an elk refers to a different type of deer, which is called a moose in North America.

It lives in the northern United States, Canada, northern Europe, and Russia, which are all approximately the same latitude (45 to 65 degrees north).
7. A fox is a type of mammal related to dogs more than most other mammals. What is the most common type of fox?

Answer: Red fox

The red fox lives in most parts of the northern hemisphere, including most of North America, Europe, and Asia. It is also the largest fox by size. It has also been introduced into Australia, but it is an invasive species there.

The gray fox lives in parts of North America. The white fox is another name for the Arctic fox, which only lives in polar regions.
8. Pigs are common farm animals. Which of these words describes a female pig?

Answer: Sow

A sow (rhymes with "now") is a female pig, while a boar is a male pig. Domesticated pigs, both male and female, can be called swine. Although pigs are almost always pink in books for children, pigs are not always pink.

The other meaning of "sow" is used in the phrase "reap what you sow", which is pronounced exactly like both "so" and "sew". That meaning of "sow" is unrelated to the meaning of a female pig.

Finally, a ewe (pronounced the same way as the word "you") is a female sheep.
9. Rats are rodents that can be found almost everywhere, both geographically (every continent except Antarctica) and types of locations (in the street, in houses, in research labs). Which of these is NOT a real animal?

Answer: Bacca rat

Rats are viewed negatively by many people. They can cause damage to buildings by tunneling, and they are viewed as dirty creatures, even more than mice. However, rats are not as bad as people think they are. Rats have been used for genetic research. Also, some people keep rats as pets, and the rats are friendly creatures.

Depending on the definition of "rat", which can vary, pack rats are sometimes not considered to be rats, although they are still real animals. However, there is no animal called a "bacca rat". Baccarat (one word, last letter silent) is a casino game, not an animal.
10. The yak is an animal that is related to cows and bison. Which continent are yaks native to?

Answer: Asia

Domesticated yaks are found in some parts of Asia, including China, Mongolia, Nepal, and Bhutan. Wild yaks, which are much rarer than domesticated yaks, are found in southern China and a very small portion of India. Yaks are closely related enough to cattle and bison that hybrids can be formed by cross-breeding.
