Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. He might not be as flashy as some of his cousins, but this trout can have a life expectancy of up to twenty years! What kind of trout is being described?

Answer: Brown trout

Originally a European species, the brown trout has been introduced into suitable environments around the world. Even though they may live up to twenty years, a large number of the males die after spawning, and many of the females do not recover from spawning.

It has been a popular fishing quarry for quite some time; in 200 AD, Aelian, a Roman author, wrote what is considered to be the first description of fly fishing for trout.
2. His name comes from his color; it doesn't have anything to do with the types of rocks this trout prefers in his water, although he is found in Italy! What kind of trout has been described?

Answer: Marble trout

Found in parts of Europe, the marble trout is named after its marbled color pattern. Its color varies from place to place; in some regions the marble trout has red spots that mix with the rest of the pigment.
3. There is no leprechaun or pot of gold, but trust me! This beautiful trout is one tasty meal! Name that trout!

Answer: Rainbow trout

Very popular in cuisine around the world, the rainbow trout is caught in the wild and farm-bred. Although many believe the wild trout has a better flavor, it is only tasted by the angler who catches it (and maybe some family or friends!), because it is illegal to sell or market wild-caught rainbow trout in the United States.
4. Found in the river of southern Idaho and western Wyoming, this specimen has a rather unusual body design. What type of trout has been described?

Answer: Snake River fine-spotted cutthroat trout

The Snake River fine-spotted cutthroat trout is covered with hundreds of small spots. As it prefers to eat other fish or small mammals, anglers who wish to catch this trout might have the best luck using large streamer flies that imitate small fish.
5. This trout species is found in Utah, in the tributaries of the Great Salt Lake. What is his name?

Answer: Bonneville cutthroat trout

There are approximately fourteen different recognized species of cutthroat trout that are native to the western United States. The main difference between a cutthroat trout and rainbow trout is that the cutthroat generally have longer heads and jaw, larger spots, and hyoid teeth between the gill arches and behind the tongue.

They can be caught with a variety of bait, and are said to have a lack of wariness to anglers.
6. Geronimo! This trout, the state fish of Arizona, is considered to be critically endangered. Consider the clues, and name that trout!

Answer: Apache trout

The Apache trout is considered to be critically endangered today. One of the main risks is that it easily hybridizes with rainbow trout and other species. In addition, the other trout that have been introduced into its natural habitat compete for food resources.
7. Native to Wyoming, this trout is found in a lake and river that shares its name. What is it called?

Answer: Yellowstone cutthroat trout

Because this trout primarily eats insects, fly fishing is an effective way to catch these beauties. The Yellowstone cutthroat has large black spots, and is copper, gold, or gray in color. It is differentiated from other species by the red, pink, or orange marking beneath its jaw.
8. First found by David Starr Jordan, the president of Stanford University in 1892, this trout is native to the Golden State. Can you name this species?

Answer: California golden trout

The California golden trout is related to the Little Kern golden trout found in Tulare County, California and the Kern River rainbow trout, found in the Kern River system. It is native to the southern Sierra Nevada mountains, and has been introduced to many locations in the western U.S.
9. Not only does this trout inhabit small streams, but he also lives in rivers, lakes, and spring ponds. Which trout is the state fish of nine different states, and is also known as the speckled trout?

Answer: Brook trout

Daniel Webster, an avid fisherman, caught a brook trout on Long Island, New York, in 1832. Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait painted a picture about the event, "Catching a Trout", in 1854. This helped to popularize angling for brook trout, which was one the most popular game fish during colonial times in America history.

The largest brook trout on record was caught in 1915 in Ontario, Canada, by Dr. W. J. Cook. It was thirty-one inches long, but only weighed 14.5 pounds. It was badly decomposed after a rather lengthy fishing trip with no available refrigeration!
10. Trust me! This trout is no monster and is not venomous, but he is native to Arizona and New Mexico. Once considered an endangered species, he has now been down-listed to threatened. Name that trout!

Answer: Gila trout

The Gila trout has a yellow head with black spots covering its body. It is closely related to the Apache trout. Part of its threatened status has to do with habitat loss. It is also another trout threatened by hybridization with other trout, such as the rainbow trout.
