Trout of Africa Trivia Quiz

This quiz is about fish native to Africa, with a punny title inspired by Isak Dinesen's personal memoirs published in 1937. It's not as difficult as it sounds since I've left clues in the questions pointing you to the right answers.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What relative of the piranha, also called Hydrocynus vittatus, is native to the Zambezi river? Most of these fish are silver with horizontal brown stripes and have very sharp, protruding teeth.

Answer: tigerfish

Some tigerfish can grow to over 30" (76 cm) long. They can be amazing centerpieces in larger aquariums but are not recommended in smaller tanks. Their diet consists mostly of smaller fish and shrimp.
2. From the family Mormyridae, what is the collective name for this family of fish that has an unusually enlarged cerebellum, thereby giving them a brain to body size ratio similar to humans? Remember, this fish never forgets.

Answer: freshwater elephantfish

Elephantfish can generate weak electrical fields to help sense their surroundings in muddy river water. Some species also have enlarged snouts to help them find food in muddy African river bottoms, further leading to the moniker.
3. Which saltwater fish, native to Africa and the eastern part of Australia, has the Latin name Atractoscion aequidens and is a member of the kob family? They are known for their bluish coloring on top, white on bottom, and an unmistakable yellow around the jaw line.

Answer: geelbek

The Geelbek can reach sizes up to 35" (90 cm) long. Adults are extremely predatorial and piscivorous (eat other fish). Juveniles wil eat smaller fish and crustaceans.
4. What African saltwater fish, scientifically called Otolithes ruber, can be found off the coast of South Africa and Mozambique? They are identified by their sharp fangs on their lower protruding jaw and bronze red hue on their dorsal side. You had better be careful removing the hook...they bite!

Answer: snapper kob

The snapper kob typically grows no larger than 24" (60 cm). They are opportunistic predators, feeding on whatever happens to be swimming by, including squid, small prawns, or mantis shrimp.
5. The Pomadasys commersonnii, also called a javelin fish, is a saltwater fish native to Africa. Its dorsal surface is covered with dark brown spots and makes a grunting sound when removed from the water. What is another common name for this fish?

Answer: spotted grunter

The spotted grunter is perhaps one of the most fished for species off the South African coast. The grunter can blow water out of its mouth to stir up sandy ocean floors in search of prey including bivalves, marine worms and crabs.
6. The Argyrosomus thorpei, is another South African saltwater fish. This exploitable fish has a bluish silver coloring and is commonly named for its straight-lined caudal fin. What is its common name?

Answer: squaretail kob

The squaretail kob can routinely grow to 47" (120 cm) long and weigh up to 29 lbs (13 kg). Juveniles will typically feed on crustaceans while adults will eat larger prawns, squid, and other fish.
7. The Metriaclima callainos is a member of the cichlid or Cichlidae family. This particular species originated in Lake Malawi and is known for its striking ultramarine hue with faint shimmering vertical stripes. What is the common name for this tropical aquarium fish?

Answer: cobalt blue zebra

The cobalt blue zebra cichlid is a member of the mbuna, or rock-dwelling fish. These fish can build nests by picking up rocks with their mouths and arranging them, thereby staking a claim to that area, and thus are aggressively territorial.
8. Which African tropical fish originating in Lake Tanganyika, has distinct yellow coloring and the scientific name Neolamprologus sexfasciatus.

Answer: gold sexfasciatus

Like the blue cobalt zebra, the gold sexfasciatus is a member of the cichlid or Cichlidae family. Males can grow up to 6" (15 cm) with females typically only reaching 5" (13 cm). In a fish tank, they should only be grouped with other Tanganyikan cichlids of similar size or African catfish.
9. Which nocturnal African whiskered fish can survive for long periods of time in shallow mud? It is part of the family Clariidae (airbreather) and has the scientific name Clarias gariepinus.

Answer: African catfish

The African catfish can be found in rivers, lakes, and swamps. Some have even been seen thriving in sewer systems, feeding off of live and dead organic matter.
10. Which perch-like African fish, of the genus and species Oreochromis niloticus, is commonly called the mango fish (western hemisphere) or pomegranate fish (Thailand)? They can be found in the Nile, Congo, and Limpopo river systems.

Answer: Nile tilapia

The Nile tilapia originated in the Nile River in modern-day Sudan. This fish played an important part in the ancient Egyptian civilization and even had its own hieroglyph. It has since expanded its habitat to include the Congo and Limpopo Rivers, creating quite a nuisance for other tilapia species native to those rivers.
