Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Similar to insects and bees, the naked mole-rat has what type of animal sociality?

Answer: Eusocial

Native to the tropical grasslands of East Africa, the naked mole-rat is one of two mammals in the world classed as eusocial, the other being the Damaraland mole-rat. Eusocial means that within the pack of naked mole-rats, there is one dominant female which is continuously reproductive. Other females from the same pack are born sterile and become the workers, providing food, shelter and look after the offspring. This works in the same way as a eusocial ant or bee community.
2. The proboscis monkey from Borneo has webbed feet and can swim.

Answer: True

With their humongous nose and large pot-belly, both male and female proboscis monkeys are able swimmers and can even swim underwater for up to twenty meters across rivers. Apart from their most identifying feature which they are named after, these monkeys have partially webbed feet which enable them to survive in water. Having said that, they live in an arboreal environment, feeding mainly on fruit and leaves from trees, their preference being the eugenia, a flowering type of myrtle which grows abundantly on the island of Borneo.
3. Similar to looking into the jaws of a vampirish horror film, which of these is a blood-sucking eel-like sea creature with horny teeth?

Answer: Lamprey

The lamprey is a jawless parasitic fish with a funnel-shaped mouth which they use as suction, attaching themselves to other fish to suck their blood. There are over forty species in the world, living in coastal areas and freshwater rivers or lakes as diverse as the River Thames and the Great Lakes in North America. Their appearance resembles an eel, with a long scale-less body which can grow up to 100cm long.
4. Not exactly the prettiest of creatures, on which continent could you find the babirusa pig?

Answer: Asia

Babirusa belongs to the Suidae family of mammals which include the pig, warthog and wild boar. Their main habitat is in Indonesia, predominantly on the Sulawesi, Bura, Sula, Moluccan and Togian islands. An adult babirusa can weigh up to 100kg and has a distinctive pair of canines, growing from the inside to the outside of their upper jaw, curving up towards the top of their head. They also have a pair of lower canine teeth growing outside of their snout which are much smaller.
5. This bird is certainly not a pretty sight! What is the name of this stork-like creature native to east Africa?

Answer: Shoebill

The shoebill is a tall wading bird native to the central African swamp and marsh regions of Sudan, Uganda and Zambia. The prehistoric looking bird has grey plumage and a large broad bill which resembles a shoe. They are a solitary breed and feed mainly at night, hunting on fish, amphibians, rodents and even small crocodiles. It is believed that only 8,000 live in the wild and so their conservation status is classified as vulnerable, mainly due to habitat loss and hunting.
6. Which breed of dog won the World's Ugliest Dog Contest nine times between 2002-2012?

Answer: Chinese crested

The World's Ugliest Dog Contest has been held annually at Petaluma in California since the late 198Os. The contest does not make fun of cute little hairless dogs, or those with wonky legs, but helps to raise awareness about heartwarming rescue dogs with strange looking oddities such as missing eyes or mismatched ears due to being mis-treated by previous owners.

The dogs are judged on special attributes which include personality and natural ugliness. Previous winners have included Rascal, (2002), Mugly (2012), and three times winner, Sam, the blind Chinese crested dog in the image shown (2003, 2004, 2005).

The Chinese crested is a small dog breed with a hairless body but with tufts of fur on their paws, tail and head.
7. Which breed is considered to be the largest flying bird in North America?

Answer: California condor

The wandering albatross is native to the southern oceans and has a wingspan of up to 3.5 meters, making it the bird with the longest wingspan. The trumpeter swan is the heaviest bird in North America, weighing up to 13kg, making it second to the condor in average mass. The bald eagle is much lighter, weighing up to 5.6kg. The California condor has a wingspan of up to 3m and weighs up to 12kg. The bird is on the critically endangered species list and has just been re-introduced back in to the wild under a breeding programme.
8. There are numerous grotesque looking underwater sea creatures including the blobfish and wolffish. This strange little critter must come at the top of the list, but what is it?

Answer: Axolotl

Alternative names for axolotl are the Mexican salamander or Mexican walking fish, because of their four external limbs. They are not a fish but an amphibian, native to central Mexico, especially Lake Xochimolco. The name axolotl derives from the Aztec word meaning "water dog". These grotesque looking creatures have small eyes and feathery looking gills which protrude from each side of their head. They are carnivorous and feed off smaller fish and insects.
9. I am a mole and I live in a hole! What is the common name for the Condylura cristata as shown in the image?

Answer: Star-nosed mole

The star-nosed mole is a small rodent found in eastern Canada and north-east America. This bizarre looking animal can be identified by the unusual shape of its nose. The nose has 22 very sensitive and fleshy looking tentacles, eleven on each side, which contain up to 25,000 miniscule sensory receptors known as Eimer's organs. These help the little feller to search for and feed on their prey which includes juicy worms and small insects. Truly fascinating!
10. Awww! How could anyone call this little cutie pie ugly? What type of personality does a sphynx cat have?

Answer: Intelligent, inquisitive, playful

The Sphynx breed of cat with their fur-less coat has been around since Ancient Egyptian times. These friendly felines love attention and their mischievous personalities will keep you amused if you are lucky enough to have one as a pet. They love to lie in a cosy spot to keep warm, and this could include on top of a computer monitor, a sunny windowsill or in front of the fire. Because they are without fur, they are usually kept indoors as they get too cold during the winter months to play outside, or are prone to burn of they remain outside in the bright summer sun.
