Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This is a nocturnal small marsupial, part of the rat-kangaroo family, has three types including the long nose and Gilbert. What marsupial is it?

Answer: Potoroo

The potoroo is about the same size of a rabbit, and hops exactly like a kangaroo with its two front legs tucked into its chest. It is nocturnal, and likes deep undergrowth for protection from predators. Its diet consists of fungi, seeds, roots, fruit and flowers.
2. Unfortunately, loss of habitat and chlamydia has caused this marsupial to decline in numbers. Which one is it?

Answer: Koala

One problem with koalas is that they only want to eat eucalyptus leaves, and if they cannot get them, they would rather starve. Their very limited diet, loss of habitat and, more recently, chlamydial infections which have affected their reproductive rate, have all contributed to koala numbers being on the decline.
3. Which of the choices is the only marsupial that lives in a burrow?

Answer: Wombat

Wombats are the closest relative of the koala. It is a land-dwelling animal that has extensive burrows and survives on eating leaves, roots and general greenery. Wombats are particularly hardy and are normally nocturnal which leads to, unfortunately, a large number being killed and left by the roadside.

It is always necessary to check a dead animal in case there is a youngster in their pouch.
4. Most of these marsupials are arboreal, with some of the species never going to ground, while others do. They prefer rainforest areas and forage high in the trees, and lower on the vines. What are they?

Answer: Tree Kangaroos

Tree kangaroos are tree dwellers which inhabit the rainforests of Northern Australia and Papua New Guinea. They have adapted their tails to balance on the tree branches and have strong claws to ensure their safety up high in the rain forest canopy.
5. These wallabies have 16 species, none located in Tasmania, whose habitat includes caves, crevices and rocky ground. What are they?

Answer: Rock Wallabies

Rock wallabies are located on mainland Australia and some islands but not Tasmania. They are adept at travelling through rocky landscape, cliffs, caves and crevices. There are 16 species located around Australia, with certain species in different areas. It should also be noted that Victoria does not have any species either.
6. These marsupials are tree dwellers and a subspecies of the possum. They are only located in a small part of Queensland, though they are more prevalent in New Guinea. What are they?

Answer: Cuscus

There are two types of cuscus; the common spotted and southern common. Both are located in the very far north of the Cape York Peninsula. The southern common cuscus is smaller, very shy and very little is known about it. Both varieties are solitary animals and mostly nocturnal.
7. This possum is Victoria's faunal emblem and is restricted to a very small area in Victoria. Which possum is it?

Answer: Leadbeater's Possum

Leadbeater's possum is a gliding possum that is found only in the mountain ash forest in Victoria's central highlands. This species lives in family groups but only the dominant pair breed. Their range of territory is around one to two hectares.
8. This carnivorous marsupial is only found in Tasmania. What is it?

Answer: Tasmanian Devil

Tasmanian devils have large heads for their bodies, powerful jaws, strong teeth and a stocky body. Tasmanian devils are nocturnal and hunt alone for small animals and carrion. They got their name partly from the screams they make at night.
9. These are termite eating marsupials that exist only in a very tiny southern part of Western Australia. What are they?

Answer: Numbats

Numbats eat termites usually located under the soil. They have strong claws to dig up the termites and use their long tongues to scoop them up. Solitary animals that live in burrows or dead trees, they forage during the early morning or evening in summer and noontime in winter.
10. Located in the northern part of Australia, this marsupial resembles a rabbit with their long ears. What is it?

Answer: Bilby

Bilbies live in scrubland and grassland of northern areas of Western Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland. Bilbies live in burrows which can reach down as far as two metres, are solitary and nocturnal.
