Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are loads of birds in the finch family, but which one these is fictitious?

Answer: Sooty finch

The goldfinch, hawfinch and citril finch are all common in Europe, but there isn't a sooty finch. There are, however, a few species of birds with the sooty moniker, such as a tern, a shearwater and an albatross.
2. The gazelle is a type of antelope, and there are numerous species of this mammal. Which one of the four listed did I make up?

Answer: Nubian gazelle

Thomson's and Mongalla gazelles can be found in Africa, whilst the mountain gazelle lives in the middle east. No Nubian gazelle, although there is a Nubian giraffe and Nubian goat.
3. There are lots of gulls out there, many of which have geographical monikers, but which one of these four isn't real?

Answer: New Zealand gull

The California gull can be found in much of western USA and Canada. The Iceland gull isn't seen very often in that particular country, but is quite common in Greenland and northern Canada. The Andean gull is found throughout much of western South America. Whilst there are numerous species of gull found in New Zealand, none of them goes by the name of New Zealand gull.
4. Which one of these species of salmon would you not find on your dinner plate, or swimming in the sea for that matter?

Answer: Rainbow salmon

Chinook, pink and sockeye salmon are all common in the Pacific Ocean. There isn't a rainbow salmon - there is however a rainbow trout.
5. There are a number of sub-species of tiger, all of which have geographical monikers, but which one of these four is a figment of my imagination?

Answer: Pakistani tiger

The Indochinese, Malayan and Sumatran tigers are all endangered in the wild. The Pakistani tiger doesn't exist.
6. There are many species of eagle throughout the world, but which of these four isn't one of them?

Answer: Roadside eagle

The pygmy eagle is found in New Guinea; the tawny eagle has a wide range in both Africa and Asia; the solitary eagle can be found in large parts of Latin America.

There is no roadside eagle, but there is a roadside hawk.
7. Which one of these species of otter is entirely fictional?

Answer: Blue-eyed otter

The smooth-coated otter and hairy-nosed otter can both be found in Asia; the spotted-necked otter is native to Africa. There is no blue-eyed otter - in fact their eyes tend to be brown in colour.
8. Which one of these species of tuna won't end up in your sandwich because it doesn't exist?

Answer: Greenfin

The Atlantic bluefin (there are also species called Pacific bluefin and southern bluefin), blackfin and yellowfin are all commercially-fished species of tuna, but the greenfin is one that I made up.
9. Which is the only one of these swans that doesn't actually exist?

Answer: Mandarin swan

The tundra swan can be found in Arctic and subarctic areas; the trumpeter swan is mostly found in northern USA and Canada; the black swan is an Australian bird. There is a mandarin duck, but no mandarin swan.
10. Foxes are found everywhere except Antarctica, and there are dozens of species. Which one of these four did I make up?

Answer: Pine fox

The bat-eared fox is found in eastern and southern Africa; the crab-eating fox is native to South America; the Bengal fox is found on the Indian subcontinent. There is a mammal called the pine marten, but none called the pine fox.
