Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Oh boy! I was so excited when I saw my betta fish Santa under the Christmas tree! Which of these is NOT true of betta fish?

Answer: They are native to North America

Bettas are also known as Siamese fighting fish and are tropical fish. In the wild, bettas are native to rice patties in Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and Cambodia. They come in a variety of colors and usually the males are the most decorative. The males have more color and fins that they typically show off to attract their mate. Females are usually not as colorful or as popular as the males because they have shorter fins and do not display themselves as much. Bettas come in a variety of sizes and tails such as the veil tail, split tail, crown tail, and comb tail.
2. I acquired several things with my betta fish to help me take care of him! Which one of these items was NOT one of the items my fish Santa needs?

Answer: a Grinch ornament

As cute as it was, the Grinch ornament was not one of the main needs of my fish Santa. Food is a big need and bettas are carnivores that have a wide range of items that can be in their diet. Many times water from tap or even bottled water has chemicals in it that can be harmful to a betta, so water conditioner helps make the water safer for them. Bettas can live in a fishbowl similar to the way goldfish do or they can live in aquariums. Be careful though! Most bettas are aggressive and do not share their space with other fish.
3. My fish Santa needed his Christmas dinner too! Which of these foods are NOT typically something a betta would enjoy eating?

Answer: plants

Bettas are carnivores so they typically enjoy eating only meat. They do enjoy eating live food such as shrimp, worms, and larva, however these can sometimes be really expensive to get. Frozen or dried foods of these are also acceptable. Pet stores generally have fish food specifically for bettas and their diet because they usually do not enjoy eating or get their full nutrition from the same food other fish may.
4. Bettas need to watch their weight sometimes like people do! Overfeeding can cause them health problems or even kill them. How often should I feed my betta fish Santa?

Answer: once a day

Usually the best option is to feed bettas once a day! They are small creatures and do not need alot of food at once but they should be fed daily. Santa is a merry little guy when he's full!
5. With live food, bettas will not stop until they've eaten their entire prey and have been known to eat themselves to death.

Answer: True

When feeding a betta live food be careful not to feed it too much at once. Bettas are carnivores and will eat entire live prey even past the point where they are full. Worms and shrimp make a good snack food if given in moderation. Another tip for live food is to rinse it underneath running water before putting it in the betta's bowl.

This can protect your fish from diseases or from unwanted bacteria. Bettas do enjoy chasing and playing with live food before they eat and it makes a very good exercise for them.
6. Santa may be a betta fish but he can get messy! Which of these is NOT a way I can help Santa stay clean and happy?

Answer: Avoid cleaning the fishbowl because it could harm the fish

Removing uneaten food keeps the water clean and keeps it from rotting or polluting the fish's home. Cloudy water can make a betta sick and is usually a sign the water is dirty. It's important to clean the fishbowl regularly and how often will depend on how large the fishbowl or aquarium is. Usually the larger the living space the less often it will need to be cleaned. For small or average sized fishbowls, it's a good standard to check or clean it once a week.
7. Changing a betta's water can be a risky situation! Which of these is NOT a way that I can avoid damaging my fish Santa?

Answer: Handle the betta very carefully with hands

When changing the water, it's a good idea to take the betta out and keep him in a small cup with his old water. He can be poured out of the cup into the new water and it will help avoid hurting him. DO NOT HANDLE A BETTA WITH YOUR HANDS! Hands can hurt the betta by damaging their scales and will can also cause the betta to stress. Stress can lead to them splitting fins or dying. The new water should be the same temperature and Ph as the old water before putting a betta in. Spontaneous temperature changes can cause a betta to get sick or slow down. Water conditioner tablets are an excellent idea! Water conditioner can remove unknown bacteria or chemicals that could harm a betta and make the water safer!
8. I placed a mirror beside my fish Santa's bowl. Why is my betta fish puffing up his fins and his lower gill at his reflection?

Answer: He is protecting his territory from what he thinks is another fish.

Bettas are aggressive fish and protect their space. They are known to fight with their reflections in mirrors because they think it is another fish. They will fight and try to kill anything they see in their bowl as a threat. This is also why is it is wise to put bettas in their own tank unless they are used to other fish.

Some pet stores do breed bettas to be in aquariums with other fish, but only one betta needs to be in the tank at a time. Some fish can be trained but do not assume a betta will adapt to other fish if it has never been in an aquarium.
9. It looks like my betta Santa has been making bubbles in his bowl! Why do male bettas often make bubble nests?

Answer: to prepare for eggs

Male bettas are the providers for their families! Males are the ones in charge of nurturing and building nests for the eggs. Male bettas will build bubble nests in their fishbowls or tanks to prepare for eggs. This does not necessarily mean that they are breeding. Single male bettas will do this as a habit of nature.
10. Learning to take care of my betta Santa has been pretty cool! I am thinking about getting him a girlfriend! Which of these is NOT one of the main things I should consider?

Answer: the betta's price

For beginners, it is best to start out with one betta at a time. Although the price of a fish is to be considered, it is worth it to buy a fish that is healthy, in good condition, and will meet your desires. Male and female bettas can live with each other but it can be very difficult. Breeding is often difficult and complicated.

When breeding bettas is it a good idea to buy bettas from a breeder that knows the betta's age, behavior, and health. Breeders can usually be the more expensive route to go, but it is worth it to have a fish that will last and meet your expectations. Usually if a pet owner wants to breed bettas it is recommended to buy the fish as a pair from the breeder. Bettas, especially males, are very territorial and putting an unfamiliar fish in their fishbowl can sometimes be dangerous. Bettas have been known to kill each other even if they are one male and female together.

In breeding it is especially important to know the betta's age because old bettas will not interact with another fish or produce any new fish. For pet owners that are not interested in breeding, it is best to keep bettas in separate bowls. That way, bettas are safe and they can keep each other company without causing harm.
