Anagrammatic Ladder Of Letters (With A Twist) Quiz

Here's my ladder: rung N+1 is an N+1 letter word which is an anagram of the N letters of rung N plus a new letter. Unlike a real ladder, at a certain rung you might want to skip a few upwards, then reverse and climb the skipped ones at ease.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This letter represents the 6th note of the C major scale.

Answer: A

Well, A added.

The scale of C major: C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C. One octave separates the two C's.
2. And this is the name of the 6th note of the C major scale.

Answer: GLA

G added.

Good Luck All.

GLE is also used (Good Luck Everyone), but it does not conform to the laws of this quiz (since the letter A has to be included).
4. KEEPER. LESS. GOLDEN. KICK. When added to each of the above, this word creates a meaningful term. All four terms are related to a very popular sports game.

Answer: GOAL

O added.

"Both goalkeepers did well and the full-time score was a goalless draw. The game was decided at extra time by a golden goal scored directly off a goal kick!"

In the USA the game is called soccer, football in the rest of the world.

The motivation for introducing the Golden Goal was that games going to extra time should not be decided with the "sudden death" penalty shootout. Golden goals were part of the UEFA set of rules between 1993 and 2004.
5. This musical term means "very slow in tempo". A key is also related to this term, but I'm not talking about a musical one...

Answer: LARGO

R added.

Largo comes from the Latin "largus" which means "give lavishly".

Key Largo is the largest of the Florida Keys.

Key Largo gave its name to a classic 1948 John Huston film starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.
6. Think of one of the most commonly used Latin proverbs which deals with the fleeting nature of fame. The sixth rung is one of its four words.

Answer: GLORIA

I added.

"Sic transit gloria mundi" litterlly means "thus passes the glory of the world". It is usually used in retrospect to note the decline of a person or an establishment. On the other hand, in Papal coronations it is used as an advance reminder (not to say warning) to the incoming Pope.
7. In medicinal terminology, an instrument for placing and fastening a thread or string used in surgery to tie blood vessels in order to prevent hemorrhage.

Answer: LIGATOR

T added.

Ligators are commonly used by proctologists to apply ligatures in the treatment of hemorrhoids.
8. The spoken and the written language meet in this colloquial British way of recognizing that things are ok.

Answer: ALROIGHT

H added.

Go ahead and net-search "alroight", you won't regret it (e.g. http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Birmingham).
9. In the quiz title I promised you a twist. In the introduction of the quiz I added a small hint. Here's your shortcut - to climb rung number 9 do the following: 1. Write down the letters added in steps 1-8, in that order. 2. Add an "M"

Answer: ALGORITHM

The question body is a simple algorithm that retrieves the word ALGORITHM.

If you solved the easy rungs 1-4 and skipped to this rung (9), you would have had ALGO____M in hand. This should have quite easily led you to the missing RITH. In that case you could have returned to the harder rungs 5-8 with the knowledge of letters added at each one. That would have saved some time, believe me.

An algorithm is a procedure describing the steps to solve a certain problem having well-defined start point (problem, input) and end point (solution, output).

The etymology of "algorithm" goes back to 9th century Persian astronomer and mathematician Al-Khwarizmi. He wrote an essay on calculation with Hindu numerals. The Arabic essay was translated into Latin in the 12th century as "Algoritmi de numero Indorum". Due to a misunderstanding the name "Algoritmi" was regarded a Latin plural and this led to the word "algorithmus" meaning "calculation method".
10. Should ten our base be - common is our degree, And natural it is - if the former's just "e", Apply us on one, You'll always get none, This being a mathematical decree.

Answer: LOGARITHMS

S added.

Logarithms with base ten are called common.
Logarithms with base e (2.718281828...) are called natural.
No matter which base is used, the logarithm of 1 is always 0 (this is a rephrase of the mathematical definition that any number raised to the power of 0 gives 1).
