George Orwell is actually the pen name for an English author who was born in 1903 with the name Eric Arthur Blair. He is most famous for writing "Animal Farm" (1945) and "Nineteen Eighty-Four" (1949). He died in 1950.

"Beasts of England" was the farm's original anthem. It was taught to the animals by Old Major. They sung it often after the revolution and was a great source of pride on the farm.

"Animal Farm!", a short anthem written by the poetic pig Minimus, replaced the original anthem.

Eventually, after Napoleon became more powerful and more corrupt, he replaced the anthem again. "Comrade Napoleon", a biased celebration of Napoleon's leadership, was installed as the new anthem.

Muriel is a wise old goat who everybody likes and respects. She is one of the few animals on the farm who is literate and it is with her help that the other animals realise that the Seven Commandments are being continually rewritten by the devious pigs.

Muriel represented the minority of working class people who were just educated enough to understand the system and make their own decisions.
