Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Starting with the word BRIDGES, drop a letter to find long narrow elevations of land or a chain of hills.

Answer: Ridges

The longest ridge in the world is actually below sea level. Over 6,200 miles long, the longest mountain range in the world is the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The ridge is almost entirely beneath the ocean and separates the North American Plate and the Eurasian Plate in the North Atlantic and the South American Plate and African Plate in the South Atlantic.
2. Now drop another letter to describe the plural of traveling on horseback.

Answer: Rides

Rides as a noun can refer to a forest path used for riding horses. More commonly it is used to denote a conveyance of some sort that transports a person between two points.
3. Time to drop another letter and mix them up a little to come up with a word that means a gently sloped hill or to ascend from a lower position.

Answer: Rise

To rise can mean to assume a standing position from either kneeling or sitting. Rise can also mean to ascend as in the term sunrise which refers to the sun ascending above the horizon to start a new day. Hills and mountains also use the descriptive term rise to depict elevation that is gently sloping.
4. Drop another letter and mix them up to find a common word that describes the emotion of wrath, anger, and extreme vexation.

Answer: Ire

Ire is a powerful negative emotion that usually is a result of an actual, or perceived, wrongdoing or personal affront. Ire can also be an emotion that results when someone gets lost in the mountains after being given poor directions. (Speaking from recent personal experience).
5. Drop a letter to find the chemical symbol for Rhenium, or to give a short word meaning "regarding," or the second note of the diatonic music scale.

Answer: re

When climbing a mountain who does not want to sing out "Do-RE-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do!" Others more chemically inclined might prefer to contemplate Rhenium's 75 proton and 111 neutron molecular structure. Still others might want to think about examples of good questions, re: being prepared to start adding letters in the next question.
6. Add one letter to find a naturally occurring rock or mineral form from which valuable commodities, like metals, can be extracted.

Answer: Ore

Hiking in the mountains means literally stepping on ore. Of course there are lots of different kinds of ore such as lead ore, iron ore, and even uranium ore. It is from ore that we get the metals that build forks, swords, refrigerators, Ferraris, and space shuttles. Prior to the Economic Union and the strange acceptance of the Euro as a universal currency, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden all used "ore" as a monetary subunit where 100 ore equalled 1 krona.
7. Time to add a letter and rearrange in order to recognize a title we might give to a search and rescue officer that saves the life of a lost hiker in the highlands of Scotland.

Answer: Hero

The word hero comes from the Greek word herwos meaning literally "protector," "defender," or "warrior." It is first thought to have been coined in English in the 14th century.
8. Time to add one letter to give the name of a long-necked and long-legged bird that can be frequently found frequenting lowland lake areas and the occasional alpine lake.

Answer: Heron

Herons are traditionally water loving birds and found around lakes, oceans, rivers, and birdbaths. There are over 60 recognized species within the Ardeidae family. Similar to storks, cranes, and ibises, they have one notable difference in that when flying their necks are retracted rather than outstretched.
9. Almost to the finish line and one letter to add to find a word that is archaic English meaning literally "on this place."

Answer: Hereon

These days, hereon is not used in common language usage but is common in legal documents along with its brothers "herewith," "hereto," "hereupon," and "hereafter."
10. Finally, to the last word...by now you know it should be "NOWHERE!" Did you happen to read the quiz title? The final question is in what country can you find the "Bridge to Nowhere?" It is 130 feet long and crosses the Mangapurua River. It is also in the same country where "The Lord of the Rings" was filmed.

Answer: New Zealand

Yep the true "Bridge to Nowhere" is a road bridge completed in June of 1936. It sits 125 feet from the valley floor and is 130 feet long. The bridge was constructed in order to open up the Mangapurua Valley and provide access to the Wanganui River. After World War I, the government opened the valley for the settlement of returning soldiers. Over 30 families moved into holdings in the valley and started a school and community. Due to the remoteness and economic hardships, only three families remained by 1942. To get to the bridge, one has to hike for over 45 minutes through the forest after taking a kayak or jet boat. No roads lead to the abandoned bridge.
