Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Blood Pumpers

Answer: Hearts

Hearts is a trick-taking card game played usually with four players. The object of the game is to either take all of the Hearts plus the Queen of Spades, called shooting the moon, or to avoid taking any Hearts and the Queen of Spades. The high card in the suit led takes each trick. Each Heart is worth one point and the Queen of Spades is worth 13 points.

The object is to not score points. If you shoot the moon then you can either give 26 points to all of your opponents or subtract 26 points from your score.

The game is usually played to 100 points.
2. Shovels

Answer: Spades

Spades is a trick-taking card game normally played with four players, two pairs of two partners. You accumulate points by taking at least the number of tricks you or your partner bid. You lose points for failing to meet your bid. Spades are always trump and will take a trick if played. If more than one Spade is played, the higher Spade takes the trick. If no Spades are played the highest card of the suit led takes the trick. Bidding takes place and then the hand is played. If a player bids Nil then they must take no tricks during the hand. If they do so they score 100 points.
3. A baby's bed + how old you are

Answer: Cribbage

A baby's bed = crib
How old you are = age
Crib + age = Cribbage

Cribbage is usually played with two players but can involve more. The dealer deals six cards to each player. Both players select four cards to keep and two cards to be put in the crib. The top card on the deck is turned over and if the card is a Jack, the dealer scores two points for the Nibs. Each player then plays a card in turn starting with the nondealer. The object is to make the total of cards played be 15 or 31, to make a run of sequential cards (i.e. 4,5,6), for pairs or for trips. Each of these plays score various points. The game is usually played to 61 or 121.
4. Alcoholic beverage made from juniper berries

Answer: Gin

Gin, or Gin Rummy as it is also known, is a two player card game. Each player is dealt 10 cards. The top card is then turned up to form the discard pile. The first player can either take a card from the discard pile or pass the option to the other player. If both players pass taking the discard then the first player draws from the stock pile.

The object of the game is to make sets (i.e. 6,6,6) or runs (i.e. 4,5,6 of Spades) so that you use all of your cards up. Runs must always be suited. Cards that are not in a set or run are known as deadwood. If all of your cards are in a set or run, meaning you have no deadwood, then you have Gin. You knock either when your deadwood totals less than 10 or if you have Gin. If you knock and your opponent has less deadwood points than you (called undercutting), then they score 25 points plus whatever deadwood you have more than they have. If you have Gin then you score 25 points plus whatever deadwood your opponent has. Normally the first person to reach 100 points wins.
5. Caribbean Alcoholic Beverage + the possessive form of I

Answer: Rummy

Caribbean Alcoholic Beverage = rum
Possessive form of I = my
Rum + my = Rummy

Rummy is a card game with upwards of 25 variations. The number of players can be anywhere from two to six players. The basics of the game are the same in most variations. The idea of the game is to make books. Books are three cards of the same rank (i.e. 6,6,6) or runs (consecutive cards of the same suit, i.e. 4,5,6 of Hearts). As in Gin or Gin Rummy, there is a stock pile and a discard pile. In turn each player must draw from either the discard or stock piles. The player then has the option of laying down books or keeping the books in their hand. The player then discards and it is their opponent's turn. A player may opt to hold their books until they can declare Rummy and go out. If a player declares Rummy they must be able to play all of their cards and have none left over. The play is risky but is worth double points. Scoring is counted by the books you have laid down and whether or not you have gone out. Scoring varies with the type of Rummy being played.
6. Water spanning structure

Answer: Bridge

The most common form of Bridge is Contract Bridge. It is a trick-taking card game with two sets of two partners playing against each other. It plays very similar to Spades except that the trump suit changes with the bidding process. It plays the same as Spades in that you need to take the number of tricks you bid.

The highest card in the suit led takes the trick unless a trump card is played, then the trump card takes the trick.
7. Focused mental effort

Answer: Concentration

Concentration is a memory game played with a standard deck of cards. Using the Jokers is optional. The entire deck is dealt out face down. Each player takes turns turning over two cards trying to get a match. If the two cards don't match the cards are turned back face down and the other player takes their turn. If a match is made that player removes the pair to their pile.

The player with the most pairs wins. In some variations you must match not only the rank but the color also.
8. One in Spanish

Answer: Uno

Uno is played with a specially printed deck of cards, not a standard deck. Basic Uno consists of a four colored deck with cards 0-9. Each color also has action cards - Draw Two, Skip or Reverse. There are also four Wilds and four Draw Four Wilds in the deck. Seven cards are dealt to each player.

The object of the game is to get rid of all of your cards. When you are down to one card you must say Uno. If a player goes out every other player must count up the points in their hand. Cards 0-9 are worth the value on them. Action cards are worth 20 points and Wilds are worth 50 points. Normal games play to 500.

The object is to not score points.
9. Armed Conflict

Answer: War

War is a card game usually played between two players. Each player is dealt half of the deck. Once this is done each player turns one card face up. Whoever has the higher card wins and takes the two cards. If the two cards are the same rank, then a War is declared and each player deals out three cards face down.

At this point each player again turns one card up. The higher card wins all of the cards in play. If they are the same rank again another War happens and the process is repeated. The winner is the player who ends up with all of the cards.
10. A metal rod for stirring the fire

Answer: Poker

Poker is a gambling card game with many types. Among the most popular are Texas Hold'em, Omaha, Five Card Draw, Five Card Stud, and Seven Card Stud. Within each of these types of poker are variations. For example, Texas Hold'em and Omaha can be Limit, Pot-Limit, or No-Limit. In Seven Card Stud and Omaha there is Hi/Lo and Eight or Better.
