Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Start with ENGLAND! Now drop a letter and rearrange to get the following word! Second word of six letters. To hang down.

Answer: Dangle

London is the Capital City of England, Great Britain and the United Kingdom. Great Britain is essentially made up of three regions, namely England, Wales, and Scotland. The United Kingdom includes England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and various islands such as the Isle of Man, Jersey, Isle of Wight, Outer Hebrides, and others surrounding the United Kingdom coast. England is the largest region within the United Kingdom comprising 57% of the total geographic area and over 80% of the total population. In many sports, like football and rugby, England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland compete as separate countries. At the Commonwealth Games, that is held every four years, these regions also compete as separate entities. Now for the confusing part! At the Winter and Summer Olympics, the IOC (International Olympic Committee) only recognizes a Great Britain team. However, Team GB should really be called Team UK because Northern Ireland athletes are also included in the British squad. So yes it is completely accurate to say that London is the capital of England but it is more accurate to say that London is the capital city of the country of the United Kingdom. Phew! What a complicated start to a Brainteaser quiz.

The word dangle means to hang loosely or to sway from side-to-side. A dangle is also a term used in hockey or lacrosse to suggest a move that completely outwits a defender or the goal-keeper.
2. Third word of five letters. Sits on top the Christmas tree.

Answer: Angel

Angels play a significant role in the Nativity story. It was the angel Gabriel that first appeared to Mary to let her know that she would be bearing the Son of God. It was angels that appeared to shepherds in the fields around Bethlehem. As Christmas trees became more popular in homes through the Advent season, people would place a star or an angel decoration as a tree topper to signify the special events of Jesus Christ's birth.

Some cultures even believe an angel on top of the tree is a way to ward off evil spirits during the holiday season.
3. Fourth word of four letters. A valley in the Scottish Highlands.

Answer: Glen

A glen is a valley that is often formed by a glacier or shaped by a watercourse. Glen is a popular Scottish name for a deep valley in the Highlands. In Scottish and Gaelic, the word descends from gleann. In Welsh, there are similar terms: glyn which translates to river, gleindid that means purity, and glan meaning clean.
4. Fifth word of three letters. Used in styling hair.

Answer: Gel

Gels are often used in styling to keep hair in place. Fat-based gels were used over 3000 years ago as evidenced by research conducted on Egyptian mummies. The main functional component of most hair gels are the cationic polymers. The positive charges in the polymers make the gels more viscous. The positive charges allow for binding of the gels to the negative-charged amino acids in the Keratin molecules of the hair. This helps create those spikey mohawks one sees occasionally in the East End of London.
5. Sixth word of two letters. Semitic word for God.

Answer: El

In Hebrew, El is a generic word for god that can be used to refer to any deity including Yahweh or Baal. In the Northwest Semitic language it also is a word used to refer to a deity. In the Levantine religion, El was used as a representation of the supreme god who is deemed the Father of all mankind. In an excavation of Tell Mardikh in Syria (2300 BC), the noun El was found at the top of a list of gods and termed the "Father of all Gods."
6. Now time to start adding a letter. Seventh word of three letters. Semi-conductor light source.

Answer: LED

The light-emitting diode (LED) is ubiquitous in the electronics market of the 21st century. There are two potential patent inventors that lay claim to its development: Oleg Losev in 1927 and Nick Holonyak in 1962. LED technology is used in advertising, general lighting, traffic signals, video displays, television remote controls, DVD players, and with many other household appliances.
7. Eighth word of four letters. An English valley.

Answer: Dale

The word dale descends from the Old English word dael and the Old Norse word dalr. Dale refers to a valley or rolling countryside as in the Yorkshire Dales. Dale has also grown to be a popular name such as in Nascar legend Dale Earnhardt, Disney's Chip n' Dale and actress Dale Evans. Robin Hood even had a buddy named Alan-a-Dale.
8. Ninth word of five letters. Tree belonging to the Birch family.

Answer: Alder

Alder is a plant in the Betulaceae family of Birch trees. There are around 30 different species of trees and shrubs in this category ranging in sizes throughout the North Temperate climate zone. Alder has a number of different uses. As a hardwood it is used in the manufacture of furniture or cabinetry. Alder wood is also the material of choice in the manufacture of Fender Stratocaster and Fender Telecaster electric guitars. One other additional tidbit of fascinating trivia, regarding alder wood, is the pilings that were used to build up Venice were largely constructed of alder.
9. Tenth word of six letters. To contact again by phone.

Answer: Redial

To redial simply means to make an additional attempt to contact another person using a communications device. However, REDIAL is also an acronym for Red Europea de Informacion y Documentacion sobre America Latina. This organization is an association formed by 43 libraries in 12 European countries (Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, United Kingdom, Spain, Slovakia, Sweden and Switzerland) with the purpose of promoting information exchange between researchers working in the area of Latin American Social Sciences and Humanities.
10. Eleventh word of seven letters. English neighbor that was host to the 2012 Gaelic World Handball Championships.

Answer: Ireland

The game is played in a similar fashion, and on a similar court, to squash. Players use the hand or fist to hit a ball against a wall instead of a racket. Games can be played as singles or doubles. It is one of the four Gaelic games organized and coordinated by the Gaelic Athletic Association.
