quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What 10-letter word describes the people of a particular era (some notable examples include the Baby Boomers, X and Y)?

Answer: generation

For those interested, the Baby Boomer generation ranges from post-war 1940s to the early 1960s, Generation X spans the early 1960s to the early 1980s, and Generation Y (my generation, by the way) from the early 1980s to the early 2000s.
2. What 9-letter word is a fruit that is not dissimilar to an orange?

Answer: tangerine

The anagrammatists out there will have noticed that I could have also opted for ARGENTINE, a word which has two meanings: anything that is or looks silvery, and a native of Argentina.
3. What 8-letter word means going into a building or becoming involved in a competition, for example?

Answer: entering

You've heard of 'breaking and entering'. Well, should I get home late at night, I have a tendency of entering and breaking something because its dark and I can't see where I'm going.

Yes, that joke is extremely tedious.
4. What 7-letter word means a whole number?

Answer: integer

Integers can be both positive and negative, but they must be whole numbers. Zero is also an integer. Essentially, any number that is not a fraction of another number is an integer.
5. What 6-letter word is a person who rules in place of a monarch when they are unable to do so themselves?

Answer: regent

Fun fact: people who rule in place of monarchs when they are unable to do so do not take up residence on London's Regent Street. Do not believe what Monopoly says.
6. What 5-letter word is the colour of the pigment chlorophyll, amongst other things?

Answer: green

Science buffs will of course know that green light has an approximate wavelength of 520-570 nanometres on the visible light section of the electromagnetic spectrum. The chlorophyll in plants makes them appear green because it reflects green light and absorbs the rest.
7. What 4-letter word is a single part of our DNA, or the first name of the actor Hackman?

Answer: gene

Genes are what determine who we are and what we look like. We are composed of 50% of our mother's genes and 50% of our father's genes, but not the same 50% each time. Identical twins can therefore be said to have almost the same 50% of genes from their parents. Gene Hackman is an actor, not someone who uses computer programs to unlawfully gain access to DNA.
8. What 3-letter word is used when referring to the maiden name of a married woman?

Answer: nee

You may have heard a woman be referred to as 'X nee Y'. Nee refers to her maiden name (which, in this rather crude example, is Y).
9. Now, start adding letters! What 4-letter word is the biblical garden where Adam and Eve resided?

Answer: eden

The Garden of Eden: an idyllic, verdant paradise that was home to Adam and Eve and a cornucopia of animals and vegetation, until that pesky serpent got involved and got Adam and Eve kicked out. No more fig leaf underwear for them.
10. What 5-letter word could be used to describe a rather thick person, or something that is impenetrable?

Answer: dense

Now, you might argue that I'm rather dense, but then you'd have to be my sibling. Then again, it does take quite a bit of intelligence for me to make it seem like I know what I'm talking about in all my quizzes.
11. What 6-letter word is not the recipient of a letter, but the person who mailed it in the first place?

Answer: sender

RETURN TO SENDER. I'm sure we've all, at one time or another, scrawled this across the front of an envelope that wasn't addressed to us but somehow had our address on it. Just a word of advice: don't do what I did and put RETURN TO SENDER on it when there was no return address on it to begin with.
12. What 7-letter word means to approve or support, such as a celebrity might do for a specific product or service?

Answer: endorse

Hi! My name is Ethan. Are you mad for trivia? Do you have an inner quiz-writer that needs to get out? Then I have the product for you! Introducing FunTrivia...
13. What 8-letter word refers to something that has been well thought out?

Answer: reasoned

I would make a reasoned argument as to why this is the penultimate quiz in the series, but I'm sure you might be able to guess. Thirty is a nice, round number.
14. What 9-letter word refers to the ways people act, or their behaviours? (American spelling, please).

Answer: demeanors

My British brethren and sisthren will, of course, spell demeanour (and, indeed, demeanours) with a u, but for the purposes of this question, I had to jump across the Atlantic and go with the American spelling.
15. What 10-letter word refers to seaside pedestrian walkways, or formal dance occasions typically held at the end of the school year?

Answer: promenades

I'm sure you're more familiar with the word 'prom' when referring to these events. Prom is the abbreviated form of promenade, a word that when used in this context, seems unequivocally posh. "I say, my dear, you are looking most resplendent. Would you accompany me to the promenade?"
