Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Drop a letter from Inverness and shuffle to find a mathematical expression that means terms that 'increase and decrease in direct proportion to each other'.

Answer: Inverses

Inverness is considered to be the capital of the Highlands, although this is not an official position. Its name comes from its location at the mouth of the River Ness.

Inverses are, in very simple terms, opposites of each other: addition and subtraction are inverses. There are other, far more complex, uses of the term in mathematics, including in calculus and set theory but these, thankfully, need not form part of this quiz.
2. Drop another letter and anagram to find a noun meaning 'people who feel jealousy'.

Answer: Enviers

Enviers, or people who feel envy, are jealous of other people's achievements and/or possessions. The Catholic church considers envy to be one of the seven deadly sins, while Islam and Buddhism also caution against the emotion in their teachings.
3. Another letter dropped and a rearrangement of the letters will create a verb which means to make a change, often to the written word, much as you are doing now.

Answer: Revise

Synonyms for revise are alter, re-evaluate and amend. The word is often used in connection with editing, when a piece of prose is fine tuned, or revised, to make it read better. As a verb, revising, or the noun revision, can be used to describe re-reading text books prior to an examination.
4. Remove another letter and change the order to come up with a division in a poem, or something found in the Bible.

Answer: Verse

A verse is often used to refer to a stanza of a poem, as part of the whole, although, technically, it should be used only for each line making up the division. In the Bible, each chapter of the various books is sub divided into verses of a few words or sentences. Someone knowledgeable can be described as 'well-versed', meaning that they are well informed.
5. Another letter disappears and another letter shuffle is needed to create a word meaning 'always' or 'at any time'.

Answer: Ever

An example of usage is 'have you ever visited Wales?', meaning 'have you at any time visited Wales?'. Another way of using ever in a sentence is 'she was ever hoping to win the lottery', as an alternative to always.
6. Time to start adding now. Add one letter and anagram to create a synonym for edge or rim.

Answer: Verge

Another synonym for verge is border. The word can also be used in the sense of being close to, such as in being 'on the verge of tears', to describe someone near to crying. In the UK, a verge can also be used for the border alongside a road, particularly one covered in grass.
7. Include another letter and shuffle to find the part of a suit of armour which protects the wearer's lower leg.

Answer: Greave

Armour to protect against attack dates back to ancient times, and greaves are mentioned in both Greek and Roman history. The lower leg is particularly vulnerable since there is little flesh to protect the underlying bones. The word derives from Old French.
8. Add one more letter, and another new word will appear. This one means to etch a design into stone or metal.

Answer: Engrave

Engraving is a way of creating a permanent mark on something, such as an epitaph on a headstone or initials on a signet ring. It can also refer to etching, perhaps by using acid. The word passed into English from French.
9. To find the next word, meaning a group of people who take reprisals and can be described as retaliators, add a letter and shuffle again.

Answer: Avengers

Avengers take revenge, either for themselves or on behalf of other wronged people. The original roots seem to be Latin, with the word coming to Middle English as avengen via the Old French avengier. 'The Avengers' has been used as a name in popular culture for television shows, such as the British series from the 1960s, American comic books and films.
10. We're nearly at journey's end. Add one final letter and anagram to come up with a town on the Thames estuary, located in Kent. It could be your final destination in more than one way.

Answer: Gravesend

Gravesend is a long established town in Kent, and is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. There are various theories regarding its name, such as it relating to the place at the end of the groves, or being the home of the reeve (graaf-ham). It probably has no connection to burial, or graves, but I couldn't resist the hint.
