Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My first stop when getting to the Zoo was to check out the BNB habitat.

Answer: bonobo

The animals that I was headed off to see were the bonobos. Also known as "Pygmy chimpanzees" the animals are on the small end of the ape family. They are one of two species that make up the genus Pan.
2. Next up I'm on to see the BLCK BR exhibit. Only without the missing letters, I can't tell if I'm there.

Answer: black bear

Black bears are listed as the most populous bear in the world according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature's 2019 listings. Along with the brown bear, they are the only two species of bear not considered endangered.

Black bears are omnivores and typically live in wooded areas.
3. Next up on the trip is the CLT, an animal known for its spots.

Answer: Ocelot

Ocelots are in the leopard family. The scientific name is Leopardis pardalis. The animals were listed as endangered in 2019, with fewer than 150 known to exist in the wild.

Rhinoceros Iguanas were named because of outgrowths, like horns, on the end of the nose. The lizard is known to be timid but has a powerful tail. The animal can grow up to five feet in length, but typically stay around 2-2.5 feet long.

Panther chameleons eat insects, small birds and other iguanas in the wild. They typically live off the ground and in rain forest type areas. Other than when mating, the panther chameleon typically lives alone and away from others of its species.

Dendroaspis angusticeps is the scientific name. While they primarily live on the ground, the green mamba is an excellent tree climber as well. They eat mostly small animals such as birds, rodents and lizards.

Answer: Bald Eagle

The bald eagle is the national animal of the United States. The bird, which ended the 20th century on the endangered species list, is gorgeous to see in flight. The birds of prey enjoys fish, smaller birds, and sometimes will scavenge for food if nothing live is readily available when it is hungry.

Answer: Congo peafowl

The Congo peafowl, is more commonly known as a peacock (male) or peahen (female). The peacock has the colored tail, used to attract mates, while the female tends to be more bland looking. The male's tail feathers typically are deep blue with a metallic green and violet tinges.

They are less colorful than the Indian peafowl, which was discovered long before the Congo species was officially recognized.
9. Our last two stops will both be in the aquarium. First up we're looking at a helpful aquatic creature called a NRS SHRK.

Answer: Nurse Shark

Nurse sharks are elasmobranch fish, meaning they have five to seven pairs of gills. They are named, not after a nurse who helps someone get healthy, but because the sound they make when hunting resembles that of a nursing animal.

Scientifically they are known as Ginglymostoma cirratum.
10. The last animal I have time to see on this trip is the CRDNL TTR. It is a small but vibrantly colored fish.

Answer: Cardinal Tetra

Scientifically they are known as Paracheirodon axelrodi. The cardinal tetra is a small fish, that lives in saltwater.

The fish is known to be a bottom dweller, and can be found in the Upper Rio Negro and Colombian waterways.
