Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. SP + something cold = a flavouring

Answer: Spice

The something cold is 'ice', or frozen water. Added to SP, you get the word 'spice'. The word 'spice' has been used in England since the early thirteenth century to describe something used to enhance the flavour of food.
2. SP + a ceremony = an elf

Answer: Sprite

Adding the word 'rite' to SP creates 'sprite'. A rite can refer to a religious ceremony or to an event to mark a particular stage in someone's life, as in 'a rite of passage'. A sprite can be a fairy or elf. In meteorology it is used to describe an electrical discharge from clouds during thunderstorms. In this sense, sprites shoot upwards at the same time as lightning is heading down.
3. SP + a corner = something shiny

Answer: Spangle

The corner is an 'angle' which can be added to SP to create 'spangle'. The best known angle is probably the right angle, thanks to Pythagoras and his theorem. A 'spangle' is a shiny decoration usually added to clothing to make it sparkle. If you're an older Briton you may also remember boiled sweets called 'Spangles', but they were discontinued in the 1980s.
4. SP + a missile = a small bird

Answer: Sparrow

Adding 'arrow' to SP creates the small brown bird known as a 'sparrow'. Arrows are an early form of missile and are normally fired from a bow. Sparrows are divided into Old World and New World species, but they both belong to the passerine family, usually described as meaning 'perching birds'.
5. SP + this place = a globe

Answer: Sphere

The place you are at is 'here', so SP plus here creates 'sphere'. Here can also refer to a point in time, as in 'the here and now' as well as to a place. A sphere is something round, like a ball, but is also used for something that may not be perfectly round, such as the Earth, which is mostly spherical but is flattened at the poles. Globes which are created to display the countries of the world are round, though.
6. SP + defeat = a vegetable

Answer: Sprout

A 'rout' is a defeat which gives you the vegetable 'sprout' when added to SP. A rout refers to a comprehensive defeat of an enemy in war, and is also used for heavy losses in sport. Sprouts are a traditional part of a Christmas dinner in the UK although they are not universally popular. They resemble small cabbages.
7. SP + mineral source = a seed cell

Answer: Spore

A mineral can be found in an 'ore', so adding ore to SP gives the new word 'spore'. Examples of mineral bearing ores are bauxite (aluminium) and cinnabar (mercury). In biology a spore is part of the reproduction process in plants and fungi.
8. SP + precipitation = ligament damage

Answer: Sprain

The form of precipitation needed here is 'rain' which creates 'sprain' when added to SP. Precipitation can refer to any form of moisture falling from the clouds, including snow, hail or sleet. It can also refer to acting quickly, without considering consequences. A sprain is caused by an injury, usually to a joint and especially the ankle, where the ligaments are stretched causing pain.
9. SP + vessel = sudden flash

Answer: Spark

The most famous 'ark' is the vessel mentioned in the Bible and adding it to SP creates the new word 'spark'. Noah built his ark to save his family and examples of all the animals from the great flood. A spark can be used in a few senses, including a flash of light created by electricity.

A spark plug in a vehicle is an example of this. It can also refer to a tiny bit of fire or, used figuratively, as a sudden flash in the expression 'a spark of inspiration'.
10. SP + finger ornament = a season

Answer: Spring

A 'ring' is something worn on a finger so adding it to SP creates one of the four seasons, 'spring'. Rings have been worn for thousands of years with the Ancient Egyptians credited as using reeds as wedding bands. The four seasons are spring, summer, autumn and winter. A spring can also be a source of water, a coil of wire or describe a sudden leap.
