The lion dance is a traditional dance in many Asian countries though its strongest association is with Chinese culture. Usually performed at Chinese New Year celebrations, the routine involves performers dressing in lion costumes and mimicking the movements of the beast. The outfit is operated by two dancers who are inside the costume. This differentiates it from the dragon dance which involves a number of dancers with the dragon apparatus strung out on a series of poles.

American doo-wop band The Tokens had a hit in 1961 with "The Lion Sleeps Tonight".

At one of these functions they were treated to a performance by a local flamenco dancer that so astonished their singer, Antonio Mange, that he jumped up and randomly sang "Give your body some joy, Magdalena, 'cause your body is for giving joy and good things to".
