Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Take the French word for mountain and a word meaning covered in blood, then insert 'me' for a British army leader from WW2.

Answer: Montgomery

Mont and gory with 'me' inserted. Mont means mountain in French, as in Mont Blanc or White Mountain in English. Gory means bloody, with the word gore having the meaning of clotted blood since the sixteenth century.

Putting 'me' in the middle gives the name of Montgomery, referring to Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery. He fought in both World Wars and is best known for his leadership in the Second World War particularly in North Africa.
2. Take a short form of Alison, the heraldic name for gold or yellow and the past tense of eat. Then insert 'me' for a word meaning to make or become better.

Answer: Ameliorate

Ali, or and ate with 'me' inserted. Alison can be referred to as Ali, in heraldry gold is called 'or', the French name, and the past tense of eat is ate. Putting me in the middle creates the word ameliorate.

The word has its roots in Latin, where melior means better. If you ameliorate something you improve it, often referring to illness or financial distress.
3. Take a conjunction, an item used in angling and one of the indefinite articles. Then insert 'me' for the name of a galaxy.

Answer: Andromeda

And, rod and A with 'me' inserted. 'And' is one of the linking words known as conjunctions and a rod is needed for angling, otherwise known as fishing. 'A' and 'an' are the indefinite articles - in this instance, it is 'a' that is needed. Putting 'me' in the middle creates the name Andromeda.

As well as being a galaxy, Andromeda was a figure in Greek myth - chained to a rock as a sacrifice before Perseus comes to her rescue. Her name was used for the galaxy.
4. Take the acronym for rapid eye movement, the chemical symbol for beryllium and a finger adornment. Then insert 'me' for a word meaning recalling.

Answer: Remembering

REM, Be and ring with 'me' inserted. REM refers to the way the eyes react when a sleeper is dreaming and beryllium is known as Be. A ring is the jewellery item worn on a finger and adding 'me' creates the word remembering.

Remembering refers to bringing to mind something from the past or temporarily forgotten about - something which becomes more difficult as we become older.
5. Take the abbreviation for California and the name of the Bible character whose wife was turned to salt and insert 'me' for the court of King Arthur (or JFK).

Answer: Camelot

CA and Lot with 'me' inserted. The state of California is known by the initials CA and it was Lot's wife (not named in the Bible) who turned to salt when she turned to look at the destruction of Sodom. Inserting 'me' creates the name of Camelot.

Camelot is primarily associated with the legendary King Arthur and his knights of the Round Table, but the name was also given to the presidency of John Fitzgerald Kennedy in the early 1960s.
6. Take the international car registration letters for Germany, Spain and Argentina and the chemical symbol for radium. Then insert 'me' for a type of sugar which is also the name of a region in South America.

Answer: Demerara

D, E, RA and Ra with 'me' inserted. D for Deutschland, E for Espana and AR for Argentina appear on vehicles from those countries when driven elsewhere than at home. The symbol for radium is Ra and inserting 'me' creates the word Demerara.

Demerara can be used as the name of a soft brown sugar, named for the region in which is now known as Guyana. The country also has a river named Demerara.
7. Take an abbreviation for South Africa and the chemical symbol for chromium. Then add an insect and the chemical symbol for oxygen and insert 'me' for the capital of a US state.

Answer: Sacramento

SA, Cr, ant and O with 'me' inserted. South Africa is often abbreviated to SA and chromium's symbol is Cr. The insect is an ant and oxygen is O. Insert me' in the middle and you will come up with Sacramento.

Sacramento is the capital city of the state of California, deriving its name from the Spanish invaders who colonised the region.
8. Take a word meaning noise, the chemical symbol for silicon and a word for 'not off' and insert 'me' for a word relating to measurement or magnitude.

Answer: Dimension

Din, Si and on with 'me' inserted. A noise, especially an unpleasant one, can be called a 'din', silicon is Si and the opposite of off is on. Putting 'me' in the midst of those words and letters gives you the new word of dimension. This word can be used to describe the size of something as in the dimensions of a room.
9. Take a word meaning friend or comrade and a letter denoting a monarch. Then add the international car registration for Sweden and a heavy weight and insert 'me' for a former UK Prime Minister.

Answer: Palmerston

Pal, R (rex or regina), S and ton with 'me' inserted. A pal is another word for a friend, and R can be used as shorthand for the Latin names for monarchs - rex being king and regina being queen. S denotes Sweden on a vehicle and a heavy weight in crosswords usually means 'ton'. Including 'me' creates the name Palmerston.

Palmerston was Prime Minister of the UK on two occasions, from 1855 until 1858 and again from 1859 to 1865. He also served as Foreign Secretary for several years.
10. Take another word for cry or shout and the international car registration letters for Italy and Austria. Then insert 'me' for a type of flower.

Answer: Camellia

Call, I and A with 'me' inserted. A shout can be a call while Italy is I and Austria A on international car plates. Inserting 'me' creates camellia, the name of a flowering plant which has numerous varieties. For some reason, the squirrels in my garden seem to love the plant, stealing and eating buds and flowers much to my annoyance.
