Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. WORLD Usually when I fly out of SYDNY (Sydney), I fly QNTS (Qantas) but as this is a trip to LS NGLS (Los Angeles) I thought I should fly with an American carrier so I chose MRCN RLNS. Who am I flying with today?

Answer: American Airlines

The direct flights from East Coast Australia (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane) to West Coast USA (LAX, San Francisco) are among the longest in the world. Other major continental US airports that have non-stop flights to Australia are Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston, which are even longer flights. These routes are flown by mainly Qantas, Virgin Australia, American Airlines, and United Airlines.
2. MOVIES It's a long flight to L (LA), 15 hours in fact, so I had better watch a movie or two. I pass over LN ("Alien") and TH GDFTHR ("The Godfather") and settle on a JMS DN (James Dean) movie, ST F DN. Which movie did I watch?

Answer: east of eden

Less is more. Perhaps the reason James Dean is so revered is that he shot very few movies before his life was tragically cut short at 24 from a traffic accident in 1955. Indiana-born Mr Dean's starring roles included "Giant" (1955), "East of Eden" (1955), and "Rebel Without a Cause" (1956). Mr Dean became the first actor to receive a Best Performance by an Actor posthumous Academy Award nomination.
3. LITERATURE After two movies, still ten hours to go before I land in CLFRN (California). Better read a book. I have bought a couple of American classics such as N FLW VR TH CCK'S NST ("One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest") and BLLY BDD ("Billy Budd") but I settle on the quintessential American novel, F MC ND MN. Which novel did I read?

Answer: Of mice and men

John Steinbeck is one of the most revered American writers, winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962 and the Pulitzer Prize for "The Grapes of Wrath in 1939".
Whilst he is viewed as a quintessential American writer he could also be considered a premier Californian writer as many of his novels are set in Californian locales such as the Salinas Valley and the California Coast Ranges.
4. CELEBRITIES Need to STRTCH (stretch) my legs. I peer into BSNSS CLSS (Business class). OMG, there's KTH RBN, (Keith Urban), one of my favourite musicians with an empty seat beside him. Where's his wife? Who did KTH marry in 2006? (See if you have caught on to this new form of language - give the answer without vowels).

Answer: ncl kdmn

Keith Urban grew up in the North Island of New Zealand before moving to north of Brisbane when he was 17. He became a country music superstar and married his equally famous wife, Nicole Kidman, in 2006. Both are Australian citizens despite being born external to the Land Down Under.
5. WORLD Finally landed at LX (LAX), found the car rental place, passed over the FRD MSTNG (Ford Mustang) and settled for the quintessential American sedan, the CHVRLT MPL. Which model Chevy did I drive?

Answer: impala

The Chevrolet Impala was introduced as the top specification model for the Bel Air range of models in 1958. Over time the Bel Air moniker was dropped and the Impala became the standard full size model for Chevrolet. It continued to sell well in the second decade of the 21st century when the American market was dominated by pick-up trucks and SUVs.
6. ENTERTAINMENT Need to hit the STHRN CLFRN (Southern California) tourist attractions. I pass on DSNYLND (Disneyland) and head for the San Fernando Valley. Yep, the HLLYWD (Hollywood) sign is down to six letters. I arrive at nearby NVRSL STDS. Where am I?

Answer: universal studios

Universal Studios Hollywood is a theme park and entertainment precinct in the San Fernando Valley north of Los Angeles. The theme park opened in 1964 but it has guided tours of the movie studios themselves that go back to 1915. One of the biggest draw-cards in Los Angeles (and that is saying something) area, its marketing headline is "The Entertainment Capital of LA".
7. MUSIC Next the WLK F FM (Walk of Fame). I particularly want to find the stars belonging to musicians. I find LS RMSTRNG (Louis Armstrong) and TH NDRWS SSTRS (The Andrews Sisters) but I cannot find DK LLNGTN. Who am I looking for?

Answer: duke ellington

Edward "Duke" Ellington (1899-1974) was an American composer, pianist, and big band leader. He was born in Washington DC but moved to New York City to ply his trade. He was instrumental in raising jazz music to the popularity levels it enjoyed in the '20s although Mr Ellington preferred to call his music American music rather than Jazz.

The big band era was pioneered by this accomplished musician.
8. HOBBIES I'm getting hungry. I pass over the national fast food chains, BURGR KNG (Burger King) and TC BLL (Taco Bell) for that iconic Southern Californian burger franchise with a 'springy' name: JCK N TH BX. Where did I eat?

Answer: jack in the box

Jack In The Box is a burger-orientated fast food restaurant that first opened in San Diego in 1951, and whilst a national chain, it is concentrated mainly in Southern California. Surprisingly its biggest seller is a taco and other non-burger items such as egg rolls, and chicken tenders often outsell specific burger products.

In-N-Out Burger (N N T BRGR) is the quintessential Southern California fast food restaurant (whose identity would suffer badly should the no vowel rule actually eventuate). The chain is a series of fast food burger restaurants that originated in Southern California and is still concentrated in the US south-west. In-N-Out Burger appear to have a better reputation than most fast food chains - It was the only fast food chain to be allowed to trade on San Francisco's Pier 39. Its "angles' are a limited menu but with secret menu items available if asked but not advertised and a refusal of the company to franchise its operations.
9. SPORT Need to see some typical American sport so I head to DDGR STDM (Dodger Stadium) to watch a baseball game. I thought the DDGRS were playing the TMP BY RYS (Tampa Bay Rays) but no, they are playing the TLNT BRVS. Who were the DDGRS playing?

Answer: Atlanta Braves

Starting out as the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1883, this major league franchise moved to the west coast before the 1958 season. Their name is a reference to the trolleys of Brooklyn which needed to be dodged for pedestrians to move across the busy NYC streets.

The LA Dodgers moved to Dodger Stadium just outside downtown LA in 1962. Notable for losing consecutive World Series in 2017-8 they had won six World Series prior.
10. GEOGRAPHY It's been a big day so I head for the coast at SNT MNC (Santa Monica) where I have booked a hotel. I chose this place as I wanted to visit the main attraction at the beach itself which is the spiritual end of Route 66. Demonstrate your prowess with this new form of language by writing down the shortened iconic beachfront attraction (without vowels) SNT MNC ____

Answer: pr

The Santa Monica pier consists of two adjoining piers. The first, built in 1909, was constructed to carry sewerage lines out beyond the breakers. The second, shorter pier was built to accommodate the amusement part, of which the Ferris wheel and the roller coaster are world famous. As this is the western end of the nostalgic Route 66, the pier features heavily in pop culture references.
