Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which word can be put after 'stomach', 'bicycle', 'petrol', and 'stirrup'?

Answer: pump

If a toxic substance needs to be removed from a stomach quickly, then a stomach pump, however uncomfortable it may be, is highly effective.

When your bike's tyres are feeling a bit down, cheer them up with a bicycle pump (or if they're exhausted, let them rest - the bike's probably two tyred!).

If your car's running a little low on petrol, drop into your local gasoline emporium (or petrol station, whatever you want to call it), and fill 'er up, as they say.

A stirrup pump is a hand-operated reciprocating pump, like what is used when there are fires to be fought.
2. Which word can you put after 'crepe', 'carbon', 'toilet' and 'blotting' to make four phrases?

Answer: paper

The thin, crinkly, decorative paper that is crepe paper is great for parties, wrapping up gifts, and even for people to run through at a football match.

Carbon paper is handy for making a copy of something while you're actually writing it. By placing a sheet of carbon paper between two sheets of paper, you can write on the top sheet of paper and it will appear on the bottom sheet too.

Toilet paper...need I explain it? Some use "The Times" but I won't go into that.

If there is some ink to be a-blotted, then the ol' blotting paper will make its appearance.
3. Which word can follow 'atomic', 'telephone', 'whole' and 'prime'?

Answer: number

The atomic number of an element is the number of protons (or electrons) in it.

You can't simply pick up the phone and start talking to someone. You have to dial their telephone number, wait a few seconds, listen to the dialling tone, wait some more, scribble on a bit of nearby paper, sound all surprised when they answer because you were expecting the answering machine, have an awkward conversation, hang up, and go about your day. At least, that's how I do it...

12 and 42 are whole numbers. 0 is a hole number (geddit?). Pi has a whole lot of numbers.

Prime numbers can only be divided by 1 and themselves. All other numbers are classified as composite. Except for the number 1. It's special. A bit like me, or so says my mum.
4. 'Yorkshire', 'black', 'plum' and 'summer' can all have the same word put after them to make two-word phrases. Which word is it?

Answer: pudding

Being English, it is the law in our house that we must have a roast dinner every Sunday, despite living in a country where you can put the meat outside for 5 minutes and it'll be burnt to a crisp. Yorkshire puddings make their appearance in our house with the roast beef.

Black pudding, contrary to the name, does not contain any black berries. I made that fatal mistake when I tried a bit for the first time. Black pudding is a type of sausage containing pork and pig's blood. Some love it, some don't. I'm in the latter.

Plum pudding, often appearing at Christmas, are a sweet cake of sorts, containing dried fruit and spices.

Summer pudding is one of my favourite desserts. Summer fruits (blackberries, raspberries, strawberries) are placed in a bowl or dish lined with bread, left to set, and then turned upside down.
5. Which word can go after 'upper', 'first', 'evening' and 'working'?

Answer: class

The upper class is the highest socioeconomic class in a society. Some may think they're better than everyone else. They're not.

First class, often associated with aeroplanes or trains, is usually the most expensive class, but offers a little bit of luxury during your period of travel.

Bored? Don't know what to do? Want to try your hand at something new? Why not try an evening class. Who knows, it could be a whole new career path for you.

Jimmy Barnes said it best when he said, "oh oh oh he's a working class man". I'm not sure where I'm going with this...
6. What word can follow 'falling', 'shooting', 'film' and 'north'?

Answer: star

Falling star and shooting star are two different names for meteors. They're not really stars, just chunks of rock that hurtle through space until an object's gravitational pull drags them down.

I'm sure we're all familiar with film stars, and at one time or another, most of us have wanted to be one. I know I have, but then I realised I can't act. Seriously, I'm awful.

Also known as Polaris, the North Star is the brightest star at the end of the handle of the Ursa Minor cluster of stars.
7. 'Free', 'estate', 'double' and 'secret' can each precede which word?

Answer: agent

A free agent can have a couple of meanings. The first is any athlete that is free to sign up to any team, and the second is someone who is free to do what they like.

An estate agent helps you buy and sell houses. In America, you might call them realtors.

Double agents are particularly prominent in spy films, where they pose as someone in order to spy on someone else. The protagonist usually puts their trust in the double agent, then finds out they're one of the baddies, then goes after them, then the double agent switches sides and becomes a good guy...needless to say I've seen a lot of them.

Secret agents are similar to double agents, but aren't the same. Where double agents make their presence known, secret agents don't. They stick to the shadows, spying on people and gathering information.
8. Which word can go after 'gaffer', 'ticker', 'masking' and 'red'?

Answer: tape

Gaffer tape is a strong tape, usually used to stick wires and cables to the floor to prevent people tripping over them or damaging them. In television shows, you might see someone credited as the gaffer. They are the electrician in charge of the lighting.

Ticker tape is a continuous long ribbon of paper upon which stock quotes are written. It also doubles as a stylish hair accessory.

Masking tape gets its name from its purpose - to mask a surface. If you're painting something, a front door for instance, then you might put masking tape around the edges of the glass to stop paint getting on it.

Though not an actual type of tape, red tape is the name given to a task which is needlessly time-consuming.
9. Which word can you put after 'live', 'barbed', 'high' and 'chicken' to make four two-word phrases?

Answer: wire

Live wire can mean a wire that carries a current, or an alert or eccentric person.

Usually seen at farms, barbed wire has little barbs dotted along it to stop the animals from getting out. Barbed wire can also be put at the top of tall fences to stop things from climbing over and escaping, like in prisons.

Also known as a tightrope, a high wire is a thin length of wire suspended at a great height that acrobats walk across. I always go weak at the knees when I see someone up there.

No, it is not a wire that's afraid to have a current running through it. Chicken wire is a sort of mesh that is used to build fences. As the name suggests, it is usually found around chicken coops.
10. Which word can be put after 'eleventh', 'zero', 'happy' and 'lunch'?

Answer: hour

The eleventh hour, usually located between the tenth and twelfth hours, lasting for roughly 60 minutes, after which the time of day will switch from a.m. to p.m., or vice versa. It also means the latest possible hour.

Zero hour is the name given the time when something will start, such as a military operation.

Happy hour is enjoyed by many people, which usually occurs in the late afternoon to early evening. During this time, many pubs and bars sell drinks at lower prices.

Most people have a lunch hour at work where they can go out and buy lunch, or take a pack lunch outside to eat. Some diligent workers have their lunch at their desk while they're doing their work. That's dedicated work, right there.
