Question 1 of 5
1. I was walking through my hometown last week. Suddenly I ran into a friend of mine, that I hadn't seen for years. He's standing in front of his house. When I asked him about his kids, he told me he had three kids. He knew I always loved maths so he told me that the product of their ages equals his own age, 36. Seeing I was puzzled, he then told me to add up their ages, so I would get his housenumber. I looked at his housenumber, but still didn't know their age. Then I heard someone playing the piano inside the house. "Oh, that's my oldest kid playing", he told me. AND then I knew how old his oldest kid was. Do you know? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: 9

You should make all combinations of three numbers that give a product of 36. For instance: 1,3,12 and 1,6,6. When you do so, you will notice there are two combinations that add up to the same value- 13, all the other combinations give a different result when added up. So there are twins involved. So, if I didn't know how old they were by looking at the housenumber, that means the housenumber had to be 13 (1+6+6 or 2+2+9).

Otherwise, since the other combinations all add up to different numbers, I would have known their age by looking at the housenumber.

But then I hear the oldest kid playing the piano, so it must be the nine-year old !
2. In a household, there are some boys and girls= at least 2 of each. Every girl has as many sisters as she has brothers. Every boy has twice as many sisters as brothers. How many boys and girls are in this household?

Answer: 3,4

When there are three boys and four girls, a boy will have 2 brothers and four sisters. A girl has three brothers and three sisters.
3. When you know it takes five cats five minutes to catch five mice, how long will it take for 100 cats to catch 100 mice?

Answer: 5 minutes

From the given statement we learn it takes a cat five minutes to catch one mouse. So if we take 100 cats, they will need also five minutes to catch 100 mice, won't they?
4. I have a wooden cube of three by three by three centimeters. I paint all the surfaces white. After that, I'll take my saw and start sawing it in little cubes of one by one by one. I will have 27 cubes after some sawing. But how many of them will have NO white colour on any surface?

Answer: 1

Only the cube that was completely in the middle of the original one won't have any paint on it. All the others will have at least one surface painted white. (eight cubes will have three painted surfaces, twelve cubes will have two painted surfaces and six cubes will have one painted surface)
5. A bag of potatoes weighs fifty kilograms divided by half the weight of the bag of potatoes. What is the weight of the bag of potatoes in kilos?

Answer: 10

If you read the question once more, slowly, you'll notice we are talking about a quadratic equation. 50 divided by x/2 equals x. So x^2 =100. Hence x=10.
