Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. M

Answer: Emu

The emu is the national bird of Australia and it holds a special place in both the culture and mythology of the Australian Aboriginal people. One of the legends they recite is that the sun was created when an emu's egg was thrown into the sky.
2. SHY LBTRSS

Answer: Shy Albatross

The shy albatross is sometimes called the white capped albatross or the shy mollymawk. They feed on fish and have been recorded diving as deep as five metres to catch their prey. They will lay only one egg during the breeding season.
3. GLH

Answer: Galah

The galah is a cockatoo that is commonly referred to as the pink and grey because of its very distinguishing plumage. In Australia the term "galah" or, more appropriately, "flamin' galah" is used as a derogatory term to describe someone acting the fool.
4. NSY SCRB BRD

Answer: Noisy Scrub Bird

Sometimes I feel that only an Australian could produce a name for a creature such as noisy scrub bird. For many years it was thought that this delightful little bird was extinct, however, a small flock was discovered in Two People's Bay in Western Australia during the late 1960s.
5. STRLN PLCN

Answer: Australian Pelican

The Australian pelican has the longest bill of any living bird. It feeds predominantly on fish, however, it has been known to eat birds and there have also been reports that it has taken and swallowed small dogs.
6. LYRBRD

Answer: Lyrebird

The lyrebird is one of Australia's best known birds, so much so that the Australian Treasury has featured it on the reverse of the ten cent coin and in the transparent window of the one hundred dollar bill. It is a ground dwelling bird that possesses a very unusual set of tail feathers and has a remarkable ability to mimic sounds, either natural or man-made.
7. BDGRGR

Answer: Budgerigar

Informally known as budgies, these creatures are close relatives of the lories (lorikeets) and have a natural colouring of green and yellow. Their size, low maintenance cost, and the fact that they can do a good impersonation of human speech make them a sought after pet.
8. CSSWRY

Answer: Cassowary

Despite being smaller than the emu it is a heavier bird. These are extremely shy birds but they can inflict some serious damage to humans and other animals when they feel threatened.
9. LTTL PNGN

Answer: Little Penguin

Also known as the fairy penguin it is the smallest of the penguin species. It is purported that Tux, the Linux mascot, was inspired by an encounter that its founder, Linus Torvalds, had with a little penguin.
10. KKBRR

Answer: Kookaburra

The kookaburra's call is an unmistakable sound that comes across as joyous human laughter that sits on the border of hysteria. The bird is an Australian icon and, under the moniker of Olly, was used as one of the mascots for the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympic Games.
