Norwegian is the official language of Norway but it has two variants (Bokmal and Nynorsk). Bookmal is the book language/national language and was derived from the era when Norway was under Danish rule during the years 1397 - 1814. Nynorsk is the new Norwegian/country language and originated from Old Norse - which had no Danish input. Nynorsk is based upon the rural dialects and is what is mostly used in those regions. There have been efforts to meld these two into a common language called Samnorsk so as to make one common national language.
