The gal with the shortest first name brewed the alphabetically first beer. Just to be clear, forename means first name and surname means last name. Draw a grid with pencil and paper to help you keep track of clues. Good luck! To start with, which beer did Ada brew? [hint: clue 8]

Answer: Belle Hops

Clue 8 states that the person with the shortest forename made the alphabetically first beer.
The shortest forename is Ada (3 letters).
Belle Hops is listed first alphbetically.
Therefore, Ada made Belle Hops.

Beer is one of the world's oldest prepared beverages, possibly dating back to the early Neolithic or 9500 B.C. Hops are the female flowers of the hop plant that are used to impart a bitter flavor and protect against bacteria.
2. What is Ada's surname?

Answer: Raskellar

Clue 1 lays out the five crafters: Ms. Kaufmann, the Quaff Yours crafter, Maude, Ms. Raskellar, and the Lager Heads crafter.
We determined in question 1 that Ada made Belle Hops, so of those five crafters she could be either Ms. Kaufmann or Ms. Raskellar.
Clue 3 tells us Ms. Kaufmann did not make Belle Hops.
Therefore, Ada is Ms. Raskellar.

In Europe, the original brewers of beer were women, called brewsters. They created a low-alcohol, high-nutrient concoction for their families that tended to be more sanitary than water. Norsemen (Vikings) especially preferred brewsters to make their öl (ale).
3. Brewster Frieda fabricated which beer? (Belle Hops, Dragon Flagon, Lager Heads, Quaff Yours, or Seidel Up)

Answer: Dragon Flagon

Clue 7 tells us that Frieda did not make Seidel Up, nor did she make Lager Heads or Quaff Yours (the beers of clue 1).
Ada made Belle Hops (question 1).
Therefore, Frieda made Dragon Flagon, the only beer left.

Many nuns in medieval Germany were brewsters and botanists. St. Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) was among the first to extol the medicinal and preservative uses of hops.
4. Frieda bears which surname -- Bier, Kaufmann, Linteers, Raskellar, or Schmidt?

Answer: Kaufmann

The five individuals of clue 1 are Ms. Kaufmann, the Quaff Yours crafter, Maude, Ms. Raskellar, and the Lager Heads crafter.
Ada is Ms. Raskellar. (question 2)
Frieda made Dragon Flagon. (question 3)
Therefore, of these five, Frieda can only be Ms. Kaufmann.

Oktoberfest began in 1810 with the October 12 wedding of Ludwig I, which included a horse race, but it evolved into an annual public festival. Horse races remained part of the celebration until 1960.
5. Which craft beer did Linda laboriously brew?

Answer: Quaff Yours

So far we know the five beermakers of clue 1 to be:
- Frieda Kaufmann ~ Dragon Flagon (questions 3 + 4)
- the Quaff Yours crafter
- Maude
- Ada Raskellar ~ Belle Hops (questions 1 + 2)
- the Lager Heads crafter
Clue 2 states that Linda did not brew Lager Heads.
The only place for her, therefore, is the Quaff Yours crafter.

Nowadays, Oktoberfest is held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany for 16-18 days starting in late September (it was moved to take advantage of nicer weather.) More than 6 million people from around the world attend Oktoberfest in Germany every year.
6. Which beer did Hedy concoct to sell at the festival?

Answer: Lager Heads

Again using clue 1 as our map, let's review what we know so far:
- Dragon Flagon by Frieda Kaufmann (questions 3 + 4)
- Quaff Yours by Linda (question 5)
- Maude
- Belle Hops by Ada Raskellar (questions 1 + 2)
- Lager Heads
The only place to where Hedy can fit is brewing Lager Heads.

Although the Quizzyland festival permits craft beer, the beer served at Oktoberfest in Munich must come from one of the traditional Munich-based breweries known as the Big Six.
7. So by elimination, which craft did Maude brew for Oktoberfest?

Answer: Seidel Up

Ada Raskellar made Belle Hops (questions 1 + 2).
Frieda Kaufmann made Dragon Flagon (question 3 + 4).
Linda made Quaff Yours (question 5).
Hedy made Lager Heads (question 6).
That leaves ony Seidel Up for Maude.

A seidel is a vessel for drinking beer, rather like a beer mug. In Germany it originally varied in size from a third to a half a litre, then eventually it grew, especially in Bavaria, to hold a full litre (1.1 quarts).
8. What is Maude's surname?

Answer: Linteers

We've already put together Ada Raskellar (question 2) and Frieda Kaufmann (question 4).
Clue 4 states that Maude's last name not Bier.
Clue 5 tells us that Maude and Ms. Schmidt are two different people.
That leaves Maude Linteers.

Oktoberfest features several tents where beer and food are served. The festival is opened at the oldest tent, the Schottenhamel tent, when the mayor of Munich taps a keg of Spaten-Franziskaner beer and exclaims, "O'zapft is!" ("the keg is breached").
9. And which surname belongs to Hedy?

Answer: Bier

We just determined Maude's surname is Linteers (question 8).
Ada is Ms. Raskellar (question 2).
Frieda is Ms. Kaufmann (question 4).
Hedy is not Ms. Schmidt (clue 6).
The only one left is Ms. Bier. She's Hedy Bier.

Märzenbier (March beer) is a traditional Bavarian lager served during Oktoberfest. Historically, because Bavarian law permitted the brewing of beer only between 29 September and 23 April, Märzenbier was brewed in spring and kept in the cellar to use during the dry period. Any remaining after September 29 was served at Oktoberfest, and so it's also called Festbier or Oktoberfestbier.
10. And finally, what is Linda's surname?

Answer: Schmidt

We put togther:
Ada Raskellar (question 2)
Frieda Kaufmann (question 4)
Maude Linteers (question 8), and
Hedy Bier (question 9).
That leaves us with Linda Schmidt.

The 1516 'Reinheitsgebot' (Beer Purity Law) in Bavaria decreed that only barley, hops, yeast and water can be used to brew beer. It was slowly adopted through all Germany. Centuries later, the European Court of Justice determined in 1987 that the 'Reinheitsgebot' was protectionist and violated the Treaty of Rome, and could not apply to beer imported into Germany. Domestic German beer, however, still follows the Purity Law.
