Question 1 of 10
1. Let's start with a simple example. I'll give you the following word pairs:
b o O - O u t
p a N - N e t
d u E - E l d
The capital letters spell out "ONE". If you correctly replace these capital letters, you get "TWO":
b o T - T u t
p a W - W e t
d u O - O l d
Likewise you could replace the C in "a r C - C a t" by an E to get the first letter of the word "ELEPHANTS".
Of course the question asks for another letter. To offer a better readability, all the letters in the words to be replaced, have been capitalized. Note: all words obtained by substituting the correct letters, are valid words according to the Scrabble dictionary.
Now the question: replace the C in "v a C - C l a n" so that you get two new valid words of which the first one ends with the initial of the last one.

Answer: (one letter. One of the resulting words is alternative spelling for a former type of cavalry soldier.)
Question 2 of 10
2. Another example shows how I could go from SEA to AIR. Look at the following word pairs:
y e S - S i t
l e E - E l l
b a A - A i m
and replace by
y e A - A i t
l e I - I l l
b a R - R i m
In the example of the CHAMELEON hiding ELEPHANTS, the task would consist of "p a H - H a y" to be replaced by "p a L - L a y".
Now the question: replace the H in "p o H - H a w " so that you get two new valid words of which the first one ends with the initial of the last one.

Answer: (one letter. One of the resulting words is something to abide.)
Question 3 of 10
3. You might need one more elaborate example. Let's turn "HE" into "IS".
I'd give you the following word pairs:
r a H - H o n
h a E - E o n
and you'd have to come up with
r a I - I o n
h a S - S o n.
Likewise, the A of "CHAMELEON" would become an E using the word pair "s e A - A r e".
Now your question: which letter would replace the A in "p e A - A i d e" so that you get two new valid words of which the first one ends with the initial of the last one?

Answer: (one letter. One of the resulting words is a household animal.)
Question 4 of 10
4. In the running example of a "CHAMELEON" hiding "ELEPHANTS", we would now have the task of replacing the M by a P in the word pairing "t o M - M a n". You'd have to come up with the solution "t o P - P a n".
Your question is something else: replace the M in the word pair "r a M - M o n" so that you get two new valid words of which the first one ends with the initial of the last one.

Answer: (One letter. One of the resulting words is a charged molecule.)
Question 5 of 10
5. In the running example of a "CHAMELEON" hiding "ELEPHANTS", we would now have the task of replacing the E by an H in the word pairing "i c E - E a t".
You would need the word pair "i c H - H a t".
Now the real question: replace the E in the word pair "h u E - E a c h" so that you get two new valid words of which the first one ends with the initial of the last one.

Answer: (one letter. One of the resulting words is a measurement used in aeronautics)
Question 6 of 10
6. In the running example of a "CHAMELEON" hiding "ELEPHANTS", we would now have the task of replacing the L by a H in the word pairing " b a L - L a p". This leads to the word pair "b a H - H a p".
Your question is to replace the L by another letter in the word pair "s e L - L i d" so that you get two new valid words of which the first one ends with the initial of the last one.

Answer: (one letter. One of the resulting words is a geographical place.)
Question 7 of 10
7. In the running example of a "CHAMELEON" hiding "ELEPHANTS", we would now have the task of replacing the E by an N in the word pairing "p i E - E t h". The result would be "p i N - N t h", where NTH means position number N in a mathematical series.
And here is your question: replace the E by another letter in the word pair "a n E - E a r" so that you get two new valid words of which the first one ends with the initial of the last one.

Answer: (one letter. One resulting word is an animal.)
Question 8 of 10
8. In the running example of a "CHAMELEON" hiding "ELEPHANTS", we would now have the task of replacing the O by a T in the word pairing " n o O - O a r". The result is "n o T - T a r".
And now your question: replace the O by another letter in the word pair "t a O - O k e" so that you get two new valid words of which the first one ends with the initial of the last one.

Answer: (one letter. One of the resulting words is a letter from another alphabet)
Question 9 of 10
9. In the running example of a "CHAMELEON" hiding "ELEPHANTS", we would now have the task of replacing the N by an S in the word pairing "b u N - N o w". The replacing pair would then be "b u S - S o w".
Your question is to replace the letter N by another letter in the following word pair: "s u N - N a p" so that you get two new valid words of which the first one ends with the initial of the last one.

Answer: (one letter. One of the resulting words is something you'd find in an atlas.)
Question 10 of 10
10. I'll reiterate the different word pairs form the previous questions here:
V A C - C L A N
P O H - H A W
P E A - A I D E
R A M - M O N
H U E - E A C H
S E L - L I D
A N E - E A R
T A O - O K E
S U N - N A P
You can clearly read out the original nine letter word "CHAMELEON". Replacing the common letters as indicated in the previous questions, also gives a nine letter word from top to bottom. Which is this word we're looking for?

Answer: (one word (nine letters). The title of this game may help you.)

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start with a simple example. I'll give you the following word pairs: b o O - O u t p a N - N e t d u E - E l d The capital letters spell out "ONE". If you correctly replace these capital letters, you get "TWO": b o T - T u t p a W - W e t d u O - O l d Likewise you could replace the C in "a r C - C a t" by an E to get the first letter of the word "ELEPHANTS". Now the question: replace the C in "v a C - C l a n" so that you get two new valid words of which the first one ends with the initial of the last one.

Answer: u

The common letters form the first nine questions will spell out "CHAMELEON" top to bottom. Each and every letter in the word "CHAMELEON" will have to be replaced by another letter. I'll mention in the question (as a running example) how the C can be replaced by an E, the H by an L, the A by an E, the M by a P, the first E by an H, the L by an A, the second E by an N, the O by a T and the N by an S - so that one CHAMELEON hides multiple ELEPHANTS. Yes we can! The correct answer is U, which results in VAU - ULAN.

The Ulan (most common spelling: Uhlan) was originally a light cavalry soldier with a lance, but later became some unit of heavy cavalry. VAU is an alternate spelling of VAV, one of the letters in the Hebrew alphabet. By the way, VAC is informal for either a vacuum cleaner or a vacation (holiday).
2. Another example shows how I could go from SEA to AIR. Look at the following word pairs: y e S - S i t l e E - E l l b a A - A i m and replace by y e A - A i t l e I - I l l b a R - R i m In the example of the CHAMELEON hiding ELEPHANTS, the task would consist of "p a H - H a y" to be replaced by "p a L - L a y". Now the question: replace the H in "p o H - H a w " so that you get two new valid words of which the first one ends with the initial of the last one.

Answer: L

The resulting words are "POL - LAW". Everybody should abide the law, of course - even if modern laws can be quite complex. POL is informal for politician.
By the way, POH is an expression of contempt, or the verb meaning to express contempt. HAW is a word that can have many meanings, such as "to stutter", the fruit of a hawthorn, or an expression to steer an animal to the left.
3. You might need one more elaborate example. Let's turn "HE" into "IS". I'd give you the following word pairs: r a H - H o n h a E - E o n and you'd have to come up with r a I - I o n h a S - S o n. Likewise, the A of "CHAMELEON" would become an E using the word pair "s e A - A r e". Now your question: which letter would replace the A in "p e A - A i d e" so that you get two new valid words of which the first one ends with the initial of the last one?

Answer: T

The correct answer is t. The resulting words are "pet" and "tide" - the latter word meaning a periodic flow of water (high tide, ebb tide).
My pet cat was planning to help out with this quiz, but she contented herself with some cuddles instead.

Answer: I

The letter I gives the words "RAI" and "ION". An ion is a molecule which counts a different number of protons and electrons, so that the molecule carries an electrical charge. RAI is an Algerian type of pop music.
By the way, MON is either the Scottish dialect form of MAN, or (as a proper name) a member of an ethnic minority in Myanmar and Thailand. Most of these Mons are of the Buddhist religion.

Answer: M

When you replace the E by a M, you get "HUM" and "MACH". Mach is a unit of speed for aircraft (speed compared to the speed of sound). For instance, a plane flying at 1 Mach is just as swift as the sound it makes.
To HUM is of course to make wordless tunes. But this verb can also signify "to give off an unpleasant odour" (British and Irish slang) or "to appear very busy".

Answer: A

The correct letter A renders the words "SEA" and "AID".
To aid is to help. The noun aid can also refer to a feudal payment, often a sum of money paid by the vassal to the lord on special occasions such as the marriage of one of the lord's daughters.
By the way, SEL is a Scottish word for SELF.

Answer: T

The correct answer is T, which results in "ANT" and "TAR". Tar is a dark viscous material (such as for instance used to join concrete slabs in roads), but can also be used informally for sailor.
You may suggest that GAR is also an animal: it is a specific type of fish. But ANG is not allowed by the Scrabble dictionary, for it is only an abbreviation.
Likewise an ANI is a South-American bird, but the word IAR exists only as an abbreviation and is thus not allowed by Scrabble.
For those wondering: ANE is the Scottish for ONE.

Answer: U

Here you needed the letter U, which gives you TAU and UKE. TAU is the 19th letter of the Greek alphabet. UKE is informal for a ukulele, the Hawaiian string instrument.
In passing I'll mention that TAO is a term from Chinese philosophy/religion, and that OKE can have several meanings. To OKE is to approve, while an OKE is either some unit of measurement (unit of weight or unit fluid content, most likely in Turkey).

Answer: M

The correct answer is M, and then you come up with the words "SUM" and "MAP".
While MAP is usually a representation of a geographical area, it is sometimes used informally as a synonym for "face" too.
Incidentally: the words "nap" and "sun" remind me of one of the favourite activities of my cats. Meow!
10. I'll reiterate the different word pairs form the previous questions here: V A C - C L A N P O H - H A W P E A - A I D E R A M - M O N H U E - E A C H S E L - L I D A N E - E A R T A O - O K E S U N - N A P You can clearly read out the original nine letter word "CHAMELEON". Replacing the common letters as indicated in the previous questions, also gives a nine letter word from top to bottom. Which is this word we're looking for?

Answer: ULTIMATUM

The title of this quiz was inspired by the title of a movie directed by Roger Spottiswoode ("Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot!", a 1992 comedy, starring Sylvester Stallone and Estelle Getty). Both titles are in fact ultimatums, but thus formulated that the addressee can't suppress a smile or a grin.
Indeed: most cartoon artists should be able to draw a chameleon holding a gun, but I don't know if any of them could avoid sketching this as a parody.

Do you want to create a chameleon quiz too? Feel free to do so, but it takes quite a lot of time to look up good words.
