Question 1 of 20
1. Since Sudoku is mostly a solving type of game, I will indulge you in a fun (I hope) puzzle. The 9x9 grid shown here will be used to solve questions 1-20. It may help to write the numbers on a sheet of paper and highlight the 9 3x3 squares. The rules are simple: every row, column, and 3x3 box must contain the numbers 1-9 only once. Use the numbers given to help solve the puzzle. For each question, fill in the numerical answer. It may help to solve the easier questions first rather than trying to go in order. Here's the board:

. A B C D E F G H I
a 8 6 ? ? 4 1 3 7 9
b ? ? 2 9 5 ? 6 8 ?
c 4 9 3 8 ? 6 1 2 ?
d 1 3 4 7 2 9 ? 6 8
e 2 7 ? ? 3 ? 4 9 ?
f 9 5 ? 1 ? 4 2 3 7
g ? ? 7 6 8 ? 9 1 3
h 6 8 1 3 9 5 ? ? 2
i 3 2 ? 4 ? 7 8 5 6

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Here's the board: . A B C D E F G H I a 8 6 ? ? 4 1 3 7 9 b ? ? 2 9 5 ? 6 8 ? c 4 9 3 8 ? 6 1 2 ? d 1 3 4 7 2 9 ? 6 8 e 2 7 ? ? 3 ? 4 9 ? f 9 5 ? 1 ? 4 2 3 7 g ? ? 7 6 8 ? 9 1 3 h 6 8 1 3 9 5 ? ? 2 i 3 2 ? 4 ? 7 8 5 6 What number goes in square a,C (row 1, column 3)?

Answer: 5

You can solve for the 5 by recognizing that the upper-left box needs a 1, 7, and 5 to complete. Since row "a" already has a 1 (a,F) and a 7 (a,H), a 5 must go in square a,C.
2. What number goes in square a,D (row 1, column 4)?

Answer: 2

The easiest way to solve for this square is to first solve for square a,C (the previous problem) and then recognize that row "a" has 8 squares filled in and thus, the remaining square must be the omitted number 2
3. What number goes in square b,A (row 2, column 1)?

Answer: 7

This square can be solved for by first recognizing that column B and C both have a 7. Therefore, the upper-left box must have a 7 in one of its three left squares. Since square b,A is the only open square, a 7 must go in that square.
4. What number goes in square b,B (row 2, column 2)?

Answer: 1

Similar to problem #6, the easiest way to solve is to recognize that columns A and C already contain a 1 and thus the upper-left box must contain a 1 in one of its middle squares. Square b,B is the only open square, so a 1 must be in that square.
5. What number goes in square b,F (row 2, column 6)?

Answer: 3

Rows "a" and "c" already have a 3 in them, so square b,F must be a 3 as it is the only open middle square in the upper-center box.
6. What number goes in square b,I (row 2, column 9)?

Answer: 4

The top-right square needs a 4 and a 5 to be completed. Since there is already a 4 in row "c", square b,I must be a 4.
7. What number goes in square c,E (row 3, column 5)?

Answer: 7

Row "c" needs a 5 and a 7 to complete. Since the top-center square already contains a 5 (b,E), square c,E must be a 7.
8. What number goes in square c,I (row 3, column 9)?

Answer: 5

The top-right square needs a 4 and a 5 to complete. Since row "b" contains a 5 (b,E), square c,I must be a 5.
9. What number goes in square d,G (row 4, column 7)?

Answer: 5

Row d has only one number omitted and that number should be a 5 in square d,G.
10. What number goes in square e,C (row 5, column 3)?

Answer: 6

If one tries to solve for this square first, it is rather difficult. It is easiest to solve by first solving other squares. One way to solve for this square is to recognize that both the middle-left square and row "f" both need a 6 and an 8 to complete. Since column E contains an 8, square f,E must be a 6 and thus square e,C must also be a 6.
11. What number goes in square e,D (row 5, column 4)?

Answer: 5

Column D needs a 2 and a 5 to complete. Since square e,A is a 2, square e,D must be a 5.
12. What number goes in square e,F (row 5, column 6)?

Answer: 8

Column F needs a 2, 8, and 9 to complete. Since row "e" already contains a 2 and a 9, square e,F must be an 8.
13. What number goes in square e,I (row 5, column 9)?

Answer: 1

The middle-right box needs a 1 and a 5 to complete. Since column G has a 1 in it (c,G), square d,G must be a 5 and square e,I must be a 1.
14. What number goes in square f,C (row 6, column 3)?

Answer: 8

This square is solved in conjunction with square e,C (question 13). One way to solve for this square is to recognize that both the middle-left square and row "f" both need a 6 and an 8 to complete. Since column E contains an 8, square f,E must be a 6 and thus square f,C must be an 8.
15. What number goes in square f,E (row 6, column 5)?

Answer: 6

The middle-center box needs a 5, 6, and 8 to complete. Since columns D and F contain a 6, square f,E must be a 6.
16. What number goes in square g,A (row 7, column 1)?

Answer: 5

Column A needs a 5 and 7 to complete. Since the lower-left box already contains a 7 (g,C), square g,A must be a 5.
17. What number goes in square g,B (row 7, column 2)?

Answer: 4

Column B needs a 1 and 4 to complete. Since the lower-left box already contains a 1 (h,C), square g,B must be a 4.
18. What number goes in square g,F (row 7, column 6)?

Answer: 2

The lower-center square needs a 1 and a 2 to complete. Since column F already contains a 1 (b,F), square g,F must be a 2.
19. What number goes in square h,G (row 8, column 7)?

Answer: 7

The lower-right square needs a 4 and a 7 to complete. Since column G already contains a 4 (e,G), square h,G must be a 7.
20. What number goes in square h,H (row 8, column 8)?

Answer: 4

Column H contains every number from 1-9 except a 4, so square h,H must be a 4. The solution for the squares i,C and i,E are as follows: Row "i" needs a 1 and a 9 to complete. Since the lower-left box already contains a 1 (h,3), square i,C must be a 9. The lower-center box needs a 1 and a 2 to complete. Since row "i" already has a 2 (i,B), square i,E must be a 1. The final board looks like this:

A B C D E F G H I
a 8 6 5 2 4 1 3 7 9
b 7 1 2 9 5 3 6 8 4
c 4 9 3 8 7 6 1 2 5
d 1 3 4 7 2 9 5 6 8
e 2 7 6 5 3 8 4 9 1
f 9 5 8 1 6 4 2 3 7
g 5 4 7 6 8 2 9 1 3
h 6 8 1 3 9 5 7 4 2
i 3 2 9 4 1 7 8 5 6
