Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What's a common word for a pupil?

Answer: Student

A student is defined as "a person formally engaged in learning". The word comes via the French from the Latin "studere", what means making efforts.
2. If we compare two or more people, what do we call the one carrying the least clothing? Use the letters from the previous answer minus one letter.

Answer: nudest

Nudest is the superlative of nude. The first and most common definition of nude is "naked or unclothed, as a person or the body".
3. What is another word for the plural of "a hard blow or hit"? Use the letters from the previous answer minus one letter.

Answer: Dunts

Dunt as a noun can mean either "a hard blow or hit" or the injury caused by such a blow. As a verb, it can mean "to strike, especially with a dull sound" or (if said about ceramics) "to crack because of rapid excessive cooling". The etymology is unclear. Personally I would think of an onomatopoeia as the origin of the word.
4. We carry on our quest with a verb that has several meanings. One of the most interesting definitions is "to daze or bewilder by noise", but the cause of the bewilderment can be anything - ranging from blunt force to cunning. What is this verb? Use all but one of the letters from the previous word.

Answer: Stun

Some of the more amusing synonyms for "to stun" are "to flabbergast" or "to dumbfound". Some expressions of the same event are "to knock over with feather" or "to knock one's socks off".
5. We continue to musical theory. What is the plural form of "the first tone of a scale", or for the music note C? Once again, use every letter but one from the previous answer.

Answer: uts

Guido of Arezzo (born probably 991 AD) was the one who came up not only with a musical notation method (which still is being used), but also with the names for the basic notes. He was inspired by the hymn sung to Saint John on June 24. The text is
"UT queant laxis
REsonare fibris,
MIra gestorum
FAmuli tuorum,
SOLve polluti
LAbii reatum,
Sancte Iohannes."

Translation gives "So that your servants may, with loosened voices, resound the wonders of your deeds, clean the guilt from our stained lips, O Saint John." (Both the Latin text and the translation are found on Wikipedia).

Each line (except the last one) starts with the note that is indicated in capitals.
Nowadays the word "ut" is not so common anymore, it was replaced by "do" but still can help solve some crosswords.
6. What is the internet domain for Sao Tome and Principe? Use two of the three letters from the previous answer.

Answer: St

ST also is an abbreviation for several words, including "Saint", "Street" or "Stere". It also resembles the sound used to make people hush up.
7. Now we start adding some letters. Take the letters from the previous answer and add one letter. What is the word you can form in this way, a word having at least one hundred definitions? I'll just give the first one: "to put in a particular place".

Answer: set

This is quite an amazing word. It can be used as a verb (a whopping 64 definitions), as a noun (29 definitions), as an adjective (6 definitions) or even as an interjection (one definition). No wonder it is one of the most current English words.
8. Another very common word can be formed by adding another letter to the previous answer. In the game of pool or billiards, and especially in snooker, what is a common name for "a notched piece of wood with a long handle, used to support the striking end of the cue when the hand cannot do so comfortably"?

Answer: Rest

The definition I chose from dictionary.com, is only one of the at least 37 definitions to the word "rest". The most common definition is "the refreshing quiet or repose of sleep".
9. Let's add yet another letter. Take the letters from the previous answer, add one, and rearrange them to find the following word. What is a genus of plants (about 180 species) that typically bloom in Eurasia in the late summer or early fall?

Answer: Aster

The two species of aster that are native to the United Kingdom, are the goldilocks (quite rare) and the sea aster. The latter can be found on salt marshes.
10. For our final word, add one more letter to the previous answer. Now you'll obtain a word that is narrowly related to the very first answer in this quiz. What is this word, with as one definition (out of 36) "a title given to a bridge or chess player who has won or placed in a certain number of officially recognized tournaments" ?

Answer: Master

Once more, the most common definition is not the one I quoted in the question. The most common definition is "a person with the ability or power to use, control, or dispose of something".
In British use, a master is also the common word for a (male) teacher. So here is the link with the first word: every master (teacher) has some students.
