Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start with a long word. As always, if you cannot solve it, go to the next question and work your way back up. What is a 12-letter word, meaning a specialist in pedagogic theory?

Answer: educationist

Pedagogy is another word for teaching or educating. An educationist is simply a person that specialises in the theories of education.
2. Drop a letter and shuffle them around. Can you see the word that means 'to run further than'?

Answer: outdistance

'Outdistance' is not really an interesting word. Shall we just move on to the next question?
3. Drop another one. What is another word for a raconteur, or story-teller?

Answer: anecdotist

Anecdotes are usually amusing and true stories of personal life and often start with 'In the good old days...', or if the anecdotist is really old, it could be 'Once upon a time...'.
4. This word is usually used in a military context. It means 'posted', as in where a soldier is located, and comes from the Latin 'to stand'.

Answer: stationed

A sentry is stationed at a camp entry point, or an entire unit could be stationed in a particular location. It is quite a multi-purpose word.
5. If you are poisoned by a spider or snake, what type of drug would the hospital staff administer to you? Drop a letter to find out.

Answer: antidote

The antidote for a snake bite is also known as antivenom. Because Australia has many of the world's most poisonous snakes and spiders, every hospital carries a supply.
6. Down to seven letters now. In 1981, British band Soft Cell had a major hit with a song about love, but what sort of love was it?

Answer: tainted

The song was originally released back in 1965, but did not perform. Soft Cell's version hit Number 1 in UK and several other countries and was Top 10 in many more. Marilyn Manson revived it in 2001, again taking it to the Top 10.
7. Drop and mix- you should have six. What word means to hold against one's will, or to deprive of liberty, perhaps in a gaol cell?

Answer: detain

The associated noun is 'detainment', but 'detention' is just as common.
8. Drop one more letter. What is the medical term for the conditions such as athlete's foot, itchy scalp or other fungal infections, some of which are more commonly known as ringworm?

Answer: tinea

Tinea is caused by a fungus and is very contagious. It can be spread by contact with shared damp surfaces, such as changing room floors, and can affect any area of the body. It is not life-threatening, but it is uncomfortable and itchy. Tinea can be prevented by sensible hygiene and there are many creams that can alleviate the symptoms.
9. Only four letters left. What word is used in card games to describe a mandatory opening bet?

Answer: ante

An ante is used to provide initial chips/cash into the central pot. It is similar to the blinds used in Texas Hold 'Em, and is used to encourage more open play.
10. Last question, I promise! Stop typing for a second, put both hands in front of your face and count your fingers. When you have an answer, simply type it in the little box that I have made expressly for that purpose.

Answer: ten

And that was Question 10! What a coincidence!
