The unclaimed area between the trenches in WW1 was called No Man's Land. It was extremely dangerous and millions lost their lives there. If it was No Man's Land was it logically a female preserve? I warned you it was a dreadful pun.

Answer: Clutch

Hold firmly = clutch and eggs about to produce chicks are called a clutch.

Answer: Postman

Postmen or mailmen carry letters and in Ireland and the UK, at least, are frequently chased by dogs.

Answer: Lame excuse

Lame made from la a French article and me a personal pronoun.
Excuse is another word for an alibi.

Answer: Turner

Return is an anagram for Turner as in Lana Turner and Joseph Turner, an actress and an artist respectively.
