Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First word: Comedians Dick or Tom.

Answer: Smothers

The Smothers Brothers were a comedy duo that gained popularity in the 1960s. Eventually they got their own TV show on CBS in the late 60s, "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour". The show lasted three seasons before the show was cancelled because of constant conflict between the brothers and CBS censors. The duo continued to perform until they retired in 2010.
2. Drop a letter and rearrange to get a vacuum flask trademark name.

Answer: Thermos

The vacuum flask was originally invented by Sir James Dewar in 1892 but was not manufactured commercially until 1904 when two German glass blowers did and gave it the name Thermos. Dewar unsuccessfully sued the two and their name became synonymous with Dewar's invention. The word thermos in this context is called a genericized or generic trademark.
3. Drop a letter to get a word to describe Debbie Reynolds' relationship to Carrie Fisher.

Answer: Mother

Debbie Reynolds is Carrie Fisher's mother. Her father is Eddie Fisher. All three have extensive entertainment careers. Debbie was a successful actress and Eddie was a successful recording artist. Carrie is best known as Princess Leia from the "Star Wars" Trilogy and later as an author of novels such as "Postcards from the Edge".
4. Drop a letter to find a Greek epic poet.

Answer: Homer

Homer, the Greek author, is best known for writing the "Iliad" and the "Odyssey". Whether Homer was an actual historic figure or not is a matter of some debate. Whether the works attributed to him were the work of one author is also up for debate. Nonetheless most historians attribute these two works to the poet Homer.
5. Drop a letter to find Caesar's city.

Answer: Rome

Roman mythology maintains Rome was founded in 753 BC but the site has been inhabited for far longer than this. It is in fact, one of the oldest continuously occupied cities in Europe and spans 2500 years. Julius Caesar founded the Roman Empire when he marched on Rome and defeated Pompey and the senate.

The assassination of Julius Caesar led to a second civil war but with the victory of Augustus, the empire was confirmed and the role of Caesar forever settled.
6. Add a letter to get the name of a star-crossed lover.

Answer: Romeo

"Romeo and Juliet" is one of the most famous plays of Shakespeare. Romeo kills himself when he thinks that Juliet is dead who then kills herself when she sees that Romeo is truly dead. Romeo is also used in the NATO alphabet for the letter R and Juliett is used for the letter J.
7. Add a letter to get Australian informal term for an adult male kangaroo.

Answer: Boomer

It appears the origin of an adult male kangaroo being referred to as a boomer traces back to an Aboriginal term for the animal. Although it can now be generally applied to any adult male kangaroo, it originally designated the alpha male in a mob. The Aboriginal roots can be attested to in "My Home in Tasmania" (1854) by Mrs. Meredith vol. I p. 244, and "An Australian Parsonage" (1872) by Mrs. E. Millet, p. 195 as cited in "Austral English" (1898) by Edward Ellis Morris, p. 42, MacMillan publisher.
8. Drop a letter to get a stick that flies.

Answer: Broom

A broom was originally a common flowering shrub whose flowers and branches were tied together to make a sweeping implement. Historically witches flew many different objects but a 1612 engraving of a witch trial in Lancashire cemented the broomstick in popular culture as the main mode of transportation. 9. Drop a letter to get the last name of "The Hiding Place" author Corrie ten ___.

They were turned in by a collaborator in 1944 and imprisoned. Corrie's father died in prison and her sister died in a concentration camp. Corrie survived the war and wrote the book "The Hiding Place" which told her family's story.

The book was turned into a movie in 1975.
