Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This street magician turned actor used his tricks while appearing in several episodes as 'Harry The Hat', a con man who fleeced the bar's patrons. Name this actor, who is best known for being a key part of the legal system on another TV series.

Answer: Harry Anderson of "Night Court"

Harry Anderson appeared in the first season (1982) of "Cheers" in Episode 4 and then in five other episodes throughout the years. Most of his appearances were of short duration but in Episode 19 of that first season, Sam used Harry to get back at a con man who had cheated Coach out of thousands of dollars. Unbeknownest to the gang, Harry and Coach pulled a big con and got all of Coach's money back and then some.

Anderson went on to play the iconic Judge Harry Stone on "Night Court" from 1984-1992. Although the writers did not have Anderson in mind when they created the character, no one could have fit the role better. Anderson even loved Mel Torme just like his character, a pure coincidence. Anderson also starred in "Dave's World" from 1994-1997, a sitcom loosely based on the writings of Dave Barry.
2. This actor, best known as a spastic neighbor on another TV show, appeared in Episode 18 of Season 3 (1985) as a man with whom Sam made a bet. Who was this man, more famous for being on a show about nothing?

Answer: Michael Richards of "Seinfeld"

Michael Richards played Eddie Gordon, a man Sam made a bet with while he was off the wagon. Sam had to find and marry a woman named Jacqueline Bisset before the deadline or Eddie got the bar. Laurie Walters from "Eight is Enough" fame played a woman who had this name and agreed to marry Sam to help him keep the bar.

Richards is most famous for playing Cosmo Kramer on "Seinfeld" from 1990-1998. Kramer was Jerry's nutty neighbor who burst into his apartment at random times, looking for food and whatever else he could 'borrow'. Although he never held a steady job he seemed to get by and was always dreaming up hare-brained schemes to get rich.
3. Which character actor appeared in a three episode arc to end Season 4 (1986) as a Boston city councilman/woman before moving on to the 'Star Trek' universe to captain a starship?

Answer: Kate Mulgrew of "Voyager"

Kate Mulgrew had been acting since 1974, before she took a spin on "Cheers". She played councilwoman Janet Eldridge, a woman who dated Sam at first for the publicity, but then fell for him. In the ending cliffhanger she asked Sam to marry her.

Although she has acted in numerous TV roles both before and after "Cheers" her most memorable role was as Captain Kathryn Janeway of the Starship Voyager. "Star Trek: Voyager" lasted for seven seasons (1995-2001) and was seen as a groundbreaking role, in that a woman had never been the lead captain in a series before.
4. Which actress played one of the girls Carla went to Catholic school with in Season 3 (1985) before she moved on to greater fame in the law enforcement field, playing a character who would take no 'bull'?

Answer: Marsha Warfield of "Night Court"

Marsha Warfield played Roxanne Brewster on Episode 24 of Season 3. In the episode Carla saw a woman she believed was the ex-principal of her all-girl Catholic school and she inivited her ex-schoolmates to the bar to see if they thought it is her too. Carla wanted revenge for her years of torture at the school. Although her friends doubted it was the principal Carla determined that it was and shaved half her head in revenge, after getting her drunk.

Warfield went on to play Roz Russell from 1986 to 1992, opposite Richard Mull as 'Bull' Shannon, the two bailiffs on "Night Court". She was the third actress to play opposite Mull and stayed until the show ended. Her character was a tough-as-nails no-nonsense person but she softened up as her time on the show went on. Warfield also played Dr. Maxine Douglas for three seasons on "Empty Nest".
5. Which actress played an actress opposite Woody in the episode "Two Girls for Every Boyd", before going on to greater fame spending time in a coffee shop in New York City?

Answer: Lisa Kudrow of "Friends"

Lisa Kudrow played Emily in Episode 9 of Season 8. In that episode Woody got the part of George Gibbs in his community theater's production of "Our Town", opposite Emily as Emily Gibbs. Woody had trouble acting like he loved Emily because of his real feelings for his girlfriend Kelly. Emily helped Woody overcome the awkwardness.

Kudrow went on to guest star on "Mad About You" as the ditzy waitress Ursula Buffay. In a crossover to her most famous role on "Friends", Ursula was the twin sister of Kudrow's Phoebe Buffay. Kudrow appeared for 23 episodes on "Mad About You" as Ursula, for eight episodes on "Friends" as Ursula, and for all 236 episodes on "Friends" as Phoebe. She won two Emmys for playing Phoebe. She has since had numerous TV and film roles.
6. Which actor delivered a letter from Carla's dead husband to her in the episode "Death Takes a Holiday on Ice", before 'soaring' to fame on another New England based sitcom?

Answer: Thomas Haden Church of "Wings"

Thomas Haden Church played Gordie Brown in Episode 7 of Season 8. Gordie was an ex-hockey player and member of the ice show Carla's husband, Eddie LeBec, was touring with. In a freak accident Eddie saved Gordie's life by pushing him out of the way of a zamboni only to get run over himself. After the funeral, in which we found out Eddie had two wives, Gordie showed up at Cheers to give Carla a note from Eddie, that he wrote in case anything ever happened to him. In the note Eddie professed his undying love for Carla even though he married the other woman too.

Church went on to play Lowell Mather on the series "Wings" for 122 episodes. He also starred opposite Debra Messing of "Will and Grace" fame on the TV show "Ned and Stacey" for two seasons (1995-1999). Since then he has become a leading actor in numerous films, including the critically acclaimed "Sideways" opposite Paul Giamatti.
7. Which actress played one of Carla's daughters, Serafina, before moving to New York and becoming 'royalty'?

Answer: Leah Remini of "The King of Queens"

Leah Remini played Carla's daughter, Serafina, in two episodes. In the first episode from Season 10 (Episode 6), Sam and Rebecca watched Carla's kids for an evening to see what parenting would be like, since they wanted to have a child. In Season 11, Episode 15, Serafina announced she was pregnant and planned to marry the father. Carla helped with the wedding plans, only to have Nick, Carla's ex, and Loretta show up.

Leah Remini went on to play Carrie Heffernan opposite Kevin James in "The King of Queens" from 1998 to 2007. She had numerous other TV guest star and movie credits, along with co-hosting the TV talk show "The Talk".
8. This actor played a man accused of attempted murder in a trial where Diane was a juror in Season 5 (1987). He went on to join the 'Star Trek' universe in a less than human role. Who is this actor?

Answer: Brent Spiner of "The Next Generation"

Brent Spiner played the man who was accused of trying to kill his wife. Diane had been the jury foreman, who was the only one who believed the husband was guilty but the trial was halted when the wife dropped the charges. Later she saw the couple at Cheers having a drink. Innocently Diane asked the wife about the trial, etc. and stirred up trouble between the couple.

Spiner went on to play the iconic role of Lt. Commander Data, an android, on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" for 176 episodes (1987-1994) and in four subsequent feature films. Spiner also portrayed Data's evil twin Lore, Data's creator Doctor Noonien Soong and a prototype android B-4. Spiner has numerous other TV and film credits.
9. Which actress played Diane's best friend in a Season 2 (1983) episode, before gaining fame as a public defender on another TV show?

Answer: Markie Post of "Night Court"

Markie Post was the third actor with ties to "Cheers" who ended up starring on "Night Court". On "Cheers" she played Diane's best friend, Heather Landon, in Episode 11 of Season 2, "Just Three Friends". Sam had never had a girl just be a friend and assumed Heather was hitting on him. Diane tried to dissuade him but then Carla stirred up Diane's insecurities. The three had dinner and Diane snapped, believing either Heather was hitting on Sam or he had interests in her.

Post went on to play public defender Christine Sullivan on "Night Court" in Seasons 3-9 (1984-1999, 153 episodes). She was a romantic interest for Judge Harry Stone (Harry Anderson) and a target of Dan Fielding's (John Larroquette) unwanted advances. Post also starred as Georgie Anne Hartman in "Hearts Afire" opposite John Ritter from 1992-1995 (54 episodes). Post has numerous other TV credits.
10. This ex-football star turned actor appeared in four episodes as Sam's ex-teammate, a sportscaster named Dave Richards. Who is this actor who went on to star in his own crime drama in the 1980s?

Answer: Fred Dryer of "Hunter"

Fred Dryer was originally in the running for the role of Sam Malone but Ted Danson won the role. Dryer played Sam's former Red Sox teammate and fellow babe hound Dave Richards in four episodes - "Sam at Eleven", "Old Flames", "Love Thy Neighbor", and "'I' on Sports". In "Old Flames" Dave predicted that Sam and Diane would be broken up in 24 hours and then set out to make it happen. In "'I' on Sports", he convinced Sam to fill in as a sports commentator for him on the news. Sam made a fool of himself in the process.

Dryer went on to star as Sgt. Rick Hunter in "Hunter", opposite Stepfanie Kramer as Sgt. Dee Dee McCall from 1984-1991 (152 episodes) and in several subsequent incarnations. Hunter was a homicide detective in LA reminiscent of Clint Eastwood's iconic character Dirty Harry. Dryer has numerous other TV credits.
