Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Raised in New Jersey, Kevin Smith was born when?

Answer: August 2, 1970

Kevin Smith was born in New Jersey and kept strong ties to the area. He opened a comic book store in Red Bank, New Jersey and based his production company, View Askew Productions, there also.
2. Kevin Smith attended film school in which Canadian city?

Answer: Vancouver

Kevin Smith attended the Vancouver Film School, in British Columbia, Canada. He chose to attend because he believed it was a more technical course dealing with the practicalities of film making and because each student would be making a film. After four months of "mostly teachers showing us films" he discovered that only four of the class would get the chance to make a short film.

At this point, he dropped out. He took a partial refund in tuition to help to fund the production of his first film "Clerks" (1994).
3. In 1994 he made his first movie, "Clerks", which went on to win the top prize at what movie festival?

Answer: Sundance Film Festival

Sundance Film Festival is a film festival which takes place annually in Utah in the United States. It began in 1978 with the goal of attracting more film makers to Utah by showcasing independent films being made in America. It was originally called the Utah/US Film Festival and actor Robert Redford was involved in its inception. In addition to using some of his tuition money, Kevin Smith sold his comic book collection in order to finance the making of "Clerks" (1994).

He filmed it at night in the convenience store where he worked.

The film followed two store clerks and their friends and customers over a day and went on to become a cult classic. After the success of the film at Sundance, Miramax Films went on to release it.
4. Kevin Smith's 1997 release followed the story of a young man whose relationship was in trouble due to the sexual orientation of his girlfriend. What was the name of this movie?

Answer: Chasing Amy

"Chasing Amy" (1997) starred Ben Affleck in the leading role, as Holden McNeil, a comic book artist. Holden and his business partner Banky, had been successful with their comic book venture titled "Bluntman and Chronic".
At a comic book convention he met Alyssa and got involved but struggled to deal with her sexual orientation. Kevin Smith actually produced three issues of the comic book which the character Holden McNeil was working on in the movie.
5. "Clerks" (1994), "Mallrats" (1995) and a number of Smith's other movies have featured two recurring characters who starred in their own movie in 2001. One of these characters is played by Kevin Smith. What was his name?

Answer: Silent Bob

Silent Bob was so named because of his trademark of rarely speaking. When he did speak, it was generally to say something wise or important. He usually communicated through Jay, the 'other half' of Silent Bob. "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" was released in 2001.
Kevin Smith has appeared as an actor in other films, the most notable of which is possibly "Catch and Release" (2006), which was the first starring role that he took where he did not write or direct the movie.
6. Kevin Smith is an avid sports fan. He was asked to write a blog on his favourite sport by which sporting organisation?

7. Which former "USA Today" reporter did Kevin Smith marry in 1999?

Answer: Jennifer Schwalbach

Kevin and Jennifer met when she interviewed him. She gave birth to their daughter Harley Quinn Smith in 1999. Both Smith's wife and daughter appear in "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back", with his daughter playing the role of Baby Silent Bob!
8. A life-long comic book fan, Kevin Smith had the opportunity, in 1996, to work on the script for a movie about which comic-book superhero?

Answer: Superman

Kevin Smith was commissioned by Warner Brothers to work on a script for Superman. He has since stated that he believes it happened because an executive at Warner Brothers saw a scene in "Mallrats" (1995), where two characters discussed Superman in great detail.
Originally he was called in to rewrite the script but he reported back to the studio that the original version was 'horrendous'. At this point he was asked to write a new script.
Smith's script was dropped when Tim Burton agreed to work on the "Superman Lives" project. Smith has since stated that although his script was not used, he enjoyed working on the project. He has discussed the time he spent with Jon Peters, a movie producer, where Peters did not want many of the famous Superman trademarks, including flying, to form part of the movie.
