Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Evel' was not his birthname, but do you know what name he came into the world with?

Answer: Robert Craig Knievel

He was born in Butte, Montana in 1938. He was given the nickname 'Evil' because of a few brushes with the law in his youth, and changed it to 'Evel' when his stunt career took off.

Edward John Smith was the captain of the Titanic.
2. Knievel had a rather chequered early life, moving from job to job. Which of these was NOT one of his jobs?

Answer: Pastrycook

He got sacked from the mining job, because he was popping wheelies with a large earthmover! He also managed to run into a power line, and blacked out the entire city of Butte for several hours.

His hunting guide days were cut short when it was discovered that he was actually poaching in Yellowstone National Park. He sold insurance for a few months, but then turned to selling motorcycles. He also spent some time in the armed forces.
3. Evel's personal life was rather turbulent, too, with a recurring on-again, off-again relationship with his youngest son, Robbie, who was also a stuntrider. He also was married more than once- how many times did he tie the knot?

Answer: 2

He married Linda Bork in 1959 and they had four children, before they divorced amicably in 1986. In 1999, he married Krystal Kennedy, a woman he met whilst pursuing his later-life passion, golf.
4. As can be expected in his line of work, Evel had many spills, some of them quite serious. One of the worst was when he ended up in a coma for a month. What was he trying to jump over, on New Years Eve, 1967?

Answer: The fountains at Caesars Palace casino

He also broke several bones, including his hip, femur, wrist and both ankles. Doctors warned that he may never walk again, but only five months later, he was in action again. He tried to jump 15 cars, and failed. Result- another broken leg!

Evel wanted to have a try at the Grand Canyon, but was stopped by the Government, and 38 buses was just a bit TOO many.
5. In 1971, a semi-biographical movie named 'The Evel Knievel Story' was released. It was the first of several movies that was released about him, and was panned by critics as a lightweight money-grab, however, the public loved it! Who played our hero in the movie?

Answer: George Hamilton

Directed by Marvin Chomsky, and with a tagline of "For Fame, Fortune and Broken Bones!", it was perceived as a sanitised story of Evel's life. Another made for TV movie, called 'Evel Knievel', starred George Eads ( of "C.S.I." fame), was made in 2004.

Evel portrayed himself in yet another movie, 'Viva Knievel!', an action movie released in 1977, and co-starring Gene Kelly and Lauren Hutton.

The publicity machine was in full production mode- he even had a pinball machine named after him, along with action toys, books and TV appearances.
6. Not all of his jumps were spectacular crashes. He made hundreds of successful jumps over all sorts of things- crushed cars, rattlesnake-filled cages, shark pools, etc- but one of his longest jumps was at Kings Island amusement park, Ohio. What did he clear in his attempt in October 1975?

Answer: 14 Greyhound Buses

He had previously failed an attempt at 13 London buses, at Wembley Stadium, in the UK. The television coverage of the jump was one of the highest rated shows in history.

The rollercoaster mentioned was not opened until 1985, and Concorde did not make any flights to Ohio amusement parks.
7. Perhaps Evel's most daring venture came on September 8, 1974, when he tried to clear the Snake River Canyon. What state is the canyon in?

Answer: Idaho

Another highly publicised failure, but Evel was not badly hurt this time. His specially-built rocket powered machine, the X2 Skycycle, had ample thrust to make the jump, but a parachute that deployed too early dragged him and the bike back into the canyon.
8. What honour was accorded Knievel in 1999?

Answer: Induction into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame

The Hall of Fame is located near Columbus, Ohio. He also has a motorcycle in the Smithsonian Institute- a 1972 Harley-Davidson 750cc machine. He was mentioned in the 'Guinness Book of World Records' for suffering the most number of broken bones.

I am reasonably confident that Montana U does NOT have a School of Bikeology.
9. Shortly before his death, Knievel was involved in a legal tussle over infringement of his trademark leather jumpsuit. He took action against which rap singer, the performer of 'Touch the Sky'?

Answer: Kanye West

West passed himself off as 'Evel Kanyevel', and wore a very similar white, red and blue jumpsuit. The case was settled out of court in the week before the real Evel passed away.
10. Evel was 69 when he died. What was the cause of his death?

Answer: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a lung disease

He was diagnosed with the incurable condition in 2005, and died peacefully at his home in Clearwater, Florida.
