Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which 1977 film, that centers on a dance competition in Brooklyn, made John Travolta the toast of Hollywood; but would prove to be the only real bubble in Karen Gorney's movie champagne?

Answer: Saturday Night Fever

'Saturday Night Fever' launched John Travolta into super-stardom but for Karen it was her only role of any note. Karen plays the part of Stephanie Mangano, a talented dancer with a higher class upbringing to Travolta's Tony Manero. Despite their differences they become dance partners and, eventually, romantically involved.

It would be another fourteen years before Karen would score another film role, this time alongside Michael J. Fox, in 'The Hard Way' (1991). Karen had previously played the character Tara Martin in the soap opera 'All My Children' between 1970 and 1974.

She briefly reprised that role in 1976.
2. Harold Russell possessed a handicap that was central to his role as Homer Parrish in the 1946 movie 'The Best Years of Our Lives'. In what manner was Harold afflicted?

Answer: He'd lost both of his hands

The film centres on three men returning home after World War II and dealing with their own demons. In Harold's case (as Homer Parish), he is a former football quarterback who loses both hands during the war and has to come to grips with living with prosthetics and the feeling of being helpless.

In real life Harold had lost both hands to an explosion while creating a training film. Russell's performance was so well received that he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor at the 1947 Awards.

As a non-professional actor the Academy felt that he was, at best, only an outside chance to win and had already presented him with an honorary award "for bringing hope and courage to his fellow veterans through his appearance". This made him the first actor to ever win an Academy Award twice for the same performance. Harold has only appeared in two other movies - 'Inside Moves' (1980) and 'Dogtown' (1997).
3. She was ten years old. She played the adorable (and scheming) Addie Loggins in 'Paper Moon' (1973) and she has won an Academy Award. Who is she?

Answer: Tatum O'Neal

Tatum's performance in 'Paper Moon' as a child con-artist growing up during the Depression is amazing. Not only did she create one of the screen's most delightful characters, her performance was good enough to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress - remember, she was only ten years old at the time.

After that, however, her career was not much more than bad news bears. To be fair to Tatum, 'Bad News Bears' (1976) can technically be classed as a success, but I ask you, can you remember her character, or her character's name.

In case you'd forgotten, it was Amanda Whurlizer. O'Neal married tennis player, John McEnroe in 1986 and following him on the circuit while raising three children put a dampener on her acting career.
4. Selected by the Australian Tourism Commission to sell Australia to the world with its "shrimp on a barbie" campaign, which man is better known for the movie character he created 'Crocodile Dundee'?

Answer: Paul Hogan

Paul Hogan became well known in Australia, due largely to his own comedy program 'The Paul Hogan Show', which aired on Australian TV between 1973 and 1984. 'Crocodile Dundee' (1986) was written by Paul Hogan and it became his first real venture into movies. Made on a budget of less than $10 million it became the biggest selling Australian movie of its time and made Hogan internationally famous. 'Crocodile Dundee II' (1988) also performed strongly at the box office. Unfortunately for Hoges, his subsequent movies had much less bite; both with the critics and at the cash register.
5. He played Luke Skywalker in the first 'Star Wars' trilogy, Episodes IV to VI (1977 to 1983). Who is he?

Answer: Mark Hamill

'Star Wars' made Mark Hamill a household name in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Unfortunately, it also made it very difficult for him to avoid being typecast. Whilst he performed in a number of feature films, his roles lacked the force and, in the main, were rather forgettable.

He did, however, make a name for himself on Broadway, winning a Drama Desk nomination for his performance in 'The Elephant Man'. Success also come to Hamill as a voice actor, lending his tones to a distinguished list of animated series' and video games.
6. Who was a howling success as the werewolf in the title of the 1981 horror movie 'An American Werewolf in London' and then disappeared from prominence faster than a speeding silver bullet?

Answer: David Naughton

The movie centres on two young men, David (played by David Naughton) and Jack (Griffin Dunne) backpacking their way through England. They get attacked in the Yorkshire moors by a werewolf. Jack is killed while David gets bitten and then has to deal with becoming a monster. John Landis wrote and directed the movie, which includes some outstanding dream sequences and set new standards in the art of make-up. Being a talented singer and dancer David had previously been able to secure the lead in a television sitcom called 'Makin' It' (1979), which modelled itself on the John Travolta vehicle 'Saturday Night Fever' (1977). Sadly for David the series only lasted eight episodes. 'An American Werewolf in London' was a big success and it should have been the ideal launching pad for Naughton.

Instead he went "from werewolf to where are you" with movie choices such as 'Hot Dog ... The Movie' (1984), 'The Sleeping Car' (1990) and 'Ice Cream Man' (1995).
7. Margaret Hamilton will always be remembered for which spellbinding performance alongside Judy Garland in the 1939 film 'The Wizard of Oz'?

Answer: The Wicked Witch of the West

Margaret Hamilton would always joke that she was made for the role of the wicked witch, recounting that when her agent had contacted her to advise that she'd scored a role in the movie, she asked "What part?" To which the response came "The Wicked Witch, what else?" Prior to being in the movies Margaret was a kindergarten teacher who doted on children, which is rather ironic as her performance scared the daylights out of kids for generations. All of her roles going forward paled significantly, so much so, that the only recognition she received of any note was in television commercials as the spirited shopkeeper promoting Maxwell House Coffee.
8. In which 1973 film does Linda Blair, as Regan MacNeil, fall under the control of a demonic entity in a performance that earned her an Academy Award nomination?

Answer: The Exorcist

Linda Blair had the world at her feet with a box office smash, an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress and a Golden Globe win in the same category. What possessed her to select some of the roles she did after 'The Exorcist' is a mystery but a number of her performances did not go unnoticed at the Razzies.

She is, however, able to laugh at herself and in 1990 acted alongside Leslie Nielsen and Ned Beaty in the horror movie spoof 'Repossessed'.
9. Patrick Fugit played the role of a fifteen year old journalist touring with a rock band in which 2000 Cameron Crowe Film?

Answer: Almost Famous

Who could forget Patrick Fugit? In 'Almost Famous' he plays the part of William Miller, a writer with a penchant for rock and roll, who is given an assignment by Rolling Stone magazine that involves going on tour with the fictional band 'Stillwater'. This film provided breakthrough roles for both Patrick and fellow actor, Kate Hudson.

However, whilst Hudson has been able to move forward to gain both critical and commercial success with roles in 'How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days' (2003) and 'Nine' (2009), Fugit's roles failed to set the world alight.
10. What is the name of the bully portrayed by Thomas F. Wilson, who was the nemesis of Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) in the 'Back to the Future' trilogy?

Answer: Biff Tannen

Biff Tannen is one of the most memorable bullies ever put on the big screen. Intimidating, thick as a brick (and that's an insult to bricks) and beautifully played by Thomas. Who could forget Biff's cutting edge repartee: "Why don't you make like a tree and get out of here?" Wilson also got to play the parts of Griff (Biff's grandson) and Buford 'Mad Dog' Tannen (his great grandfather) during the course of the series. Moving forward, Wilson's characters lacked the muscle to produce a compelling on-screen career.

However, he is not without talent and has found himself in great demand as a voice actor for animated features and video games.
