Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Born in China, she became a citizen of which country in 2008?

Answer: Singapore

She married Singaporean businessman Ooi Hoe Soeing in 1996, and became a Singaporean citizen in 2008.
2. Which of these Chinese political organizations did she attend?

Answer: Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference

Gong Li was a member of 9th and 10th CPPCC (the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference). Though it is generally a rubber-stamp organization, she did present some bills there. She never attended CNC (the Chinese National Congress).
3. She joined the jury of which film festival?

Answer: All three of them

She joined the jury of the 50th Cannes Festival (1997), 50th Berlin Film Festival (2000) and 59th Venice Festival (2002). She was the jury president at the Berlin and Venice festivals. In addition to the above three, she was also the jury president of 16th Tokyo International Film Festival (2003).
4. Which of these Chinese film awards did she NOT win?

Answer: Ornamental Columns Award

Gong Li enjoyed high prestige, especially professionally, in mainland China. She won Hundred Flower best actress award (an audience-voted award) for her performance in "Raise the Red Lantern" (1991), Golden Rooster best actress award (a professional-voted award) for the film "Breaking the Silence" (2000), Golden Phoenix award (one given by the association of acting) for the film "The Story of Qiu Ju" (1992).

But strangely she never won Chinese Ornamental Columns Award, a goverment-given award.
5. Gong Li has an English name.

Answer: False

Though Gong is very active internationally, she never had an English name. Some Chinese would like to interpret this act as patriotic, but I think they overstated its significance. I guess Gong just didn't see the neccessity of owning an English name. By the way, her English speaking is not very good. In all her Hollywood films, she learned her English lines phonetically.
6. Besides Zhang Yimou, which Chinese director did Gong Li work with most?

Answer: Chen Kaige

She performed in "Farewell My Concubine" (1993), "Temptress Moon" (1996), "The Emperor and the Assassin" (1998), which were all directed by Chen Kaige, another great Chinese director. But there is a long-held saying in China that Gong performs best in Zhang Yimou movies but pale much in movies by other directors.
7. In which Hong Kong movie did Gong Li NOT appear?

Answer: "A Better Tomorrow" (1986)

Gong Li collaborated with Hong Kong film companies on mnmay occasions. Generally speaking, Hong Kong movies are very commercially oriented so it was not very easy for a mainland actress like Gong Li to work there. But she still achieved success and won a Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actress for "Curse of the Golden Flower" (2007).
8. With which western actor did she NOT work?

Answer: Nicholas Cage

She worked with Colin Farrell in "Miami Vice" (1997), with John Cusack in "Shanghai" (2010) and with Pierce Brosnan in an advertisement for Loreal Paris. She never worked with Nicholas Cage, though she once said she wish she had.
9. Which honor was awarded by UNESCO (United Nations Education, Science and Cultural Organization) to Gong Li?

Answer: Artist for Peace

UNESCO named her Artist For Peace in May 2000. The status of being one of the most beautiful 50 people is awarded by the American magazine "People". The honor of presenting one of the greatest 100 acting moments in film history is awarded by the American magazine "First Show". Art and Letter Commander is awarded by the French government.
10. In which movie did she play three roles?

Answer: "Terracotta Warrior" (1990)

In "Terracotta Warrior", she acted the role of three girls, with a long interval between. The first was a maid in an imperial palace in Qing dynasty, the second was an unpopular actress in 1920s, and the last one was a Japanese tourist girl in 1980s. In fact they are the same one coming back to life repeatedly after death, a theme popular in early 1990s Hong Kong movies. Gong Li performed very well with these three roles, exerting her various acting abilities.

By the way, she acted two roles in the movie "Zhou Yu's Train" (2002).
