Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Few celebrity deaths caused such angst and hysteria as Rudolph Valentino's in 1926. A world-wide silent movie icon, he was stricken with an appendicitis attack and, as a result of surgery, peritonitis. After his death, something unique happened to Valentino. What was that odd situation?

Answer: He had two separate funerals.

Valentino died at 31. Once his peritonitis was thought to be under control, doctors believed he would recover. However, three days later, pleurisy developed and the young star was doomed. Doctors didn't tell Valentino that he was going to die and he was optimistically telling visitors about his future movies. Two days later, on August 23, he was dead.

After his death, there was a huge funeral in New York City that was attended by more than 100,000 grief-stricken fans. His body was then taken across country and a second well-attended funeral took place in Beverly Hills.
2. Isadora Duncan was an American dancer who stretched boundaries with her interpretive dance. She preferred dancing barefoot and in a tunic, oftentimes being labelled scandalous. However, most remember her for the unusual way she died. What article of clothing was responsible for her death?

Answer: Scarf

Isadora, who was very fond of long scarves, was wearing one while traveling in an automobile. It trailed outside the convertible, wrapping around the spokes of the rear tire. The scarf tightened rapidly, choking her and ultimately breaking her neck. The date was September 14, 1927 and Duncan was only 50 years old.
3. Jayne Mansfield, one of the blonde bombshells of the 1950s and 1960s, died in a car crash after her legs were severed and the bleeding could not be stopped.

Answer: False

Mansfield was indeed killed in an automobile crash on June 29, 1967. However, the car hit the back of a tractor trailer rig and slid right underneath, shearing off the front windshield of the vehicle, killing Mansfield and two other passengers in the front instantly. Three of her children, including Mariska Hargitay, who were riding in the back seat, survived.

Despite popular lore, she was not actually decapitated but did suffer fatal head injuries.
4. Marvin Gaye was a well known singer from the 1960s through the 1980s. While the music was loved, Marvin had personal problems including disputes with the members of his own family. On April 1, 1984, he was shot and killed. Which family member pulled the trigger?

Answer: Father

After a dispute which had raged on for a number of days, his father, Marvin Sr., shot him twice. Gaye was dead before he arrived at the hospital. Ironically, he was shot by the very gun Gaye had given his father for a Christmas present.
5. Brandon Lee, son of martial arts movie star Bruce Lee, began to follow in his dad's footsteps in the mid-1980s, appearing in movies and television shows. He landed his first starring role in a movie that started filming in early 1993. However, in a tragic accident, a gun filled with blanks already had a real bullet that had become stuck in the barrel during an earlier scene. Brandon was instantly killed. What was the name of the movie that was released posthumously?

Answer: The Crow

Lee died on March 31, 1993 and was only 28 years old. "The Crow" was released in 1994, after editing to finish the scenes Lee hadn't yet filmed. The movie became a huge hit and was his final legacy. The movie followed story of Eric Draven, who was murdered along with his fiancee. Draven, a rock and roll star, is brought back from the dead to wreak havoc on the perpetrators.
6. Tennessee Williams is one of the most recognized playwrights in American history. However, the cause of his death in February, 1983 was truly a very strange one. What type of item was allegedly to have caused Williams to choke to death?

Answer: Bottle cap

Williams allegedly choked on a bottle cap from an eye drop bottle. Holding the cap in his mouth while administering the drops, he accidentally inhaled the cap where it became lodged in his throat, choking him to death. This was the report from the original autopsy.

However, recent investigations have disputed the original findings and say Williams died of drug and alcohol overdose. Despite the controversy, the original autopsy, as of 2013, had not been changed and remains his official cause of death.
7. Harry Houdini mystified and thrilled millions of people during his lifetime. Many of his tricks still can't be duplicated. However, it was one simple act that eventually caused his death. What did a young man do to him that caused Houdini's death?

Answer: Punched in the stomach

Houdini had previously stated that blows to his stomach didn't affect him. On October 24, 1926, before a show, a young college student challenged him and, receiving Houdini's okay, started punching his stomach. Unfortunately, Harry was reclining on a couch and wasn't able to properly prepare himself.

After two days, Houdini finally went to a doctor who immediately performed surgery on his ruptured appendix. However, on October 31, Houdini died of peritonitis.
8. Jack Daniel, the king of Tennessee whiskey, died from the effects of kicking his safe in 1911.

Answer: False

Some accounts say that Jack Daniel, 62 at the time, frustrated once again at not being able to properly remember the combination, kicked the offending safe when it wouldn't open. Blood poisoning set in due to an infection in his toe from the kick and he died a few days later. While he did die of blood poisoning, this story is questionable and most likely untrue.
9. This prominent American actor fell victim to an odd way of dying, death by tripping. This star, an Oscar winner for "Stalag 17", was alone and drinking in his apartment when he tripped on a rug, hit his head on a table and bled to death. Who was this actor who tripped his way out of this world in 1981?

Answer: William Holden

Official documents state that Holden was mostly likely conscious for a while after hitting his head, since he subsequently moved around the apartment. Whether because of the alcohol or the blow to the head, he apparently didn't realize how badly he was hurt and never made any attempt to get help.
10. Sonny Bono had a full life - popular singer, mayor, and United States Representative. However, it all came to an end quickly in 1998 when he died as a result of what?

Answer: Skied into a tree

Bono was skiing at the Heavenly Ski Resort near South Lake Tahoe, California, when he lost control and hit a tree. He was only 62. Appropriately, his epitaph on his gravestone says "And the beat goes on."
