Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Greta Garbo was well known for the seriousness of the roles that she played throughout her career, not appearing in a light-hearted film until she made "Ninotchka" in 1939. To highlight the rarity of Garbo performing something other than straight drama, what was the promotional tagline given to the film?

Answer: Garbo Laughs!

The famous tagline "Garbo Laughs!" was a play on "Anna Christie", Garbo's first talkie, which was marketed with the line "Garbo Talks!". Although "Ninotchka" was her first comedy, it was far from the first time that the star had openly laughed on screen.
2. Marilyn Monroe's last complete film was 1961's "The Misfits", in which she starred with Clark Gable. Following this, in 1962 she began work on a film that would end up being unfinished. What was it called?

Answer: Something's Got to Give

"Something's Got to Give" was planned as a remake of the 1940 film "My Favorite Wife", starring Monroe and Dean Martin. Made at a time when Monroe was struggling with both health and addiction problems, the star had repeated absences for sickness over the course of her time on set, which led to her being fired in June 1962.

Although she was subsequently re-hired, she died before shooting could resume. The film was eventually made as "Move Over, Darling" (1963) with Doris Day and James Garner.
3. During World War II, Marlene Dietrich undertook a number of tours for the United Services Organization (USO) to raise morale for US troops overseas. In 1947, for this work, she received a decoration from the US Government. Which decoration did she receive?

Answer: Medal of Freedom

In addition to her work with the USO, Dietrich was also employed to undertake propaganda work for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). The 'Muzak' project was undertaken to make propaganda broadcasts designed to demoralise the enemy; among the many artists to undertake these broadcasts, Dietrich was the only one to be aware that their recordings were to be for use by OSS.
4. In 1951, Grace Kelly made her film debut with a small role in "Fourteen Hours", alongside Paul Douglas and Richard Basehart. She appeared in a total of eleven films over five years before retiring on her marriage to the head of which European microstate?

Answer: Monaco

Following her appearance in "Fourteen Hours", she was cast as the female lead in "High Noon" (1952), appeared in two films directed by Alfred Hitchcock, and appeared in her last film in 1956, playing Tracy Lord in the musical "High Society". Following this, she married Prince Ranier III of Monaco and retired from acting.
5. Between 1931 and 1937, Jean Harlow was cast in a total of six films alongside which actor?

Answer: Clark Gable

Jean Harlow was first cast alongside Clark Gable in "The Secret Six" in 1931. In 1937, while they were part way through the production of their sixth collaboration, "Saratoga", Harlow, who had suffered bouts of ill-health throughout her career, collapsed with what was initialled diagnosed as an inflamed gallbladder, but was subsequently revealed to be kidney failure. On June 7, 1937, she died at the age of 26.
6. In 1941, Rita Hayworth appeared in "You'll Never Get Rich", the first of two appearances with Fred Astaire. In 1944 she became the first performer to dance on screen with both Astaire and Gene Kelly, but in which film musical did she appear with Kelly?

Answer: Cover Girl

Although Hayworth is well known for her appearances in the 'femme fatale' role, in films such as "Gilda" (1946) and "The Lady from Shanghai" (1947), she was a trained dancer who appeared in a number of musicals. She was the first of six dancers to perform on screen with both Astaire and Kelly, the others being Ann Miller, Judy Garland, Vera-Ellen, Cyd Charisse and Leslie Caron.
7. Lauren Bacall was famously married to Humphrey Bogart from 1945 until his death in 1957. Four years later, in 1961, she married another actor. Who was her second husband?

Answer: Jason Robards

Bacall's first film appearance was in "To Have and Have Not" (1944) opposite Bogart. Despite a 25-year age difference, the fact that Bogart was already married, and the disapproval of director Howard Hawks, the chemistry between the pair led to them beginning a relationship that culminated in Bogart divorcing his wife and marrying Bacall the following year.
8. Katharine Hepburn holds the record for the most acting Oscars, but how many did she win?

Answer: Four

Katharine Hepburn won her first Academy Award for her performance in "Morning Glory" (1933). More than thirty years later, she received her second and third in consecutive years with "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner" (1967) and "The Lion in Winter" (1968), while her fourth and final win was for "On Golden Pond" (1981). She was nominated a further eight times between 1936 and 1963.
9. In 1957, during production of "Another Time, Another Place", Lana Turner's boyfriend Johnny Stompanato came to the set and threatened her co-star with a gun. Who was the actor threatened?

Answer: Sean Connery

Turner entered into a relationship with Stompanato, a man with links to organised crime, in early 1957, which became increasingly abusive. Later in 1957, during production of "Another Time, Another Place" in England, Stompanato visited Turner. Becoming suspicious when she had him barred from the set, and attempted to have him deported due to his violent behaviour, he turned up at the studio and threatened both Turner and Connery with a gun. Connery responded to this by forcing the gun out of his hand and throwing him off the set.
10. In 1942, Bette Davis was one of a number of stars that were behind the opening of a club for servicemen, but what was it called?

Answer: Hollywood Canteen

Bette Davis was a driving force behind the Hollywood Canteen, eventually serving as the project's president. One of the major things she did was ensuring that major Hollywood stars were there every night to meet and greet the servicemen. For her work with the Hollywood Canteen, in 1980 Davis was awarded the Distinguished Civilian Service Award, the highest award to civilians given by the United States Department of Defense.
