Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You might remember him as Dr. Frasier Crane on "Cheers" and "Frasier" or Sideshow Bob if you're a fan of the TV show "The Simpsons." Name this versatile actor.

Answer: Kelsey Grammer

Kelsey Grammer has found success over the years as a film, TV, stage, and voice actor. He has been nominated for an Emmy Award for playing the same role, Dr. Frasier Crane, in three different television series. Kelsey has won numerous Emmy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and in 2010 was nominated for a Tony Award for a lead performance in the stage musical "La Cage aux Folles."
2. His first name is a shortened version of Willard. Known mostly for his starring roles on TV and film, this Fresh Prince has also won Grammy Awards. Who is he?

Answer: Will Smith

Born Willard Carroll Smith, Jr. in Philadelphia, the popular actor began his acting career in the TV series "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air." Prior to that, he was part of the rap duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince. Will has starred in such blockbuster films as "Men in Black" and "Independence Day."
3. This formidable actress has taken on a variety of roles for which she has been nominated numerous times for an Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, and Emmy. She played the role of Cruella de Vil in the film "101 Dalmatians" and its sequel. Who is this versatile actress?

Answer: Glenn Close

In addition to her many film and TV roles, Miss Close is no stranger to the Broadway stage and has won Tony Awards for her stage performances. She began her Broadway career in 1974 and moved to films in 1982. One of her most unusual roles was playing the title role in the film "Albert Nobbs" which is a film about a woman who lived most of her life as a man.

The film takes place in Ireland during the 1880s.
4. He was the King of Cool and personification of the anti-hero. Born with the first name Terence but better known by his middle name, this actor loved motorcycles and race cars and owned a large collection of both. In the late 1950s he starred in the TV western "Wanted:Dead or Alive" as well as the 1968 film "Bullitt," known for its long car chase through San Francisco. Which actor am I describing?

Answer: Steve McQueen

Steve's last role was in a film genre he was comfortable with: the western. In 1980 he starred as "Tom Horn" based on the true story of a scout turned hired gunman in the American Old West. Dying from cancer at the time of filming, Steve believed his disease came from jobs working with and around asbestos, despite the fact he was a heavy smoker.

He received an Academy Ward nomination for the war film "The Sand Pebbles." Although he was well known for clashing with actors and directors, he starred in several high-grossing films: "The Great Escape," "The Magnificent Seven," and "The Towering Inferno." Steve McQueen died in 1980.
5. He was the star of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" along with a group of animated co-stars. This talented British actor specialized in playing tough guy roles. He died of pneumonia in 2014. Who is he?

Answer: Bob Hoskins

Bob Hoskins had the ability to sound Cockney as easily as he could sound like a native New Yorker. This underrated actor, at least in my opinion, began his career in theater after which he moved to television and finally film. He received critical acclaim for the films "The Long Good Friday" and "Mona Lisa" and entertained everyone as Smee in the 1991 film "Hook."
6. "How sweet it is!" Those words were made famous by which beloved actor and comedian known for playing the role of Ralph Kramden in the long-running TV comedy "The Honeymooners?"

Answer: Jackie Gleason

John Herbert Gleason was many things: actor, comedian, and musician. Jackie began appearing in small movie roles in the early 1940s. Parlaying that success into nightclub acts and television, it led to his own TV show "The Jackie Gleason Show" which first appeared in the early 1950s. With Gleason's blend of comedy and brashness he was able to connect with audiences.

It helped that his show featured the June Taylor Dancers, a professional dance troupe. Although he could not read or write music, the melodies just came to him and he was able to communicate the songs in his head to his assistants who in turn transcribed the melodies into musical notation. Jackie Gleason also tried his hand at dramatic roles.

The films "The Hustler" and "Requiem for a Heavyweight" demonstrated his skill at dramatic acting.
7. He was christened Joseph Yule, Jr. Known for his short stature and numerous marriages, this talented actor began a successful screen pairing with Judy Garland in the 1930s. Name this talented star.

Answer: Mickey Rooney

Mickey got his start in vaudeville when he was a young boy. That's when his parents gave him the stage name that followed him throughout his life. He moved on to shorts and then into films in the 1930s. Starring in a wide range of roles, Mickey and Judy Garland starred together in a series of "Andy Hardy" films.

The two became great friends. He had starring roles in many television shows of the 50s and 60s and even published a memoir "Life is Too Short." This talented actor won awards for film, TV, and Broadway, no easy feat.

He died in 2014.
8. This actor comes from a show business family. Both his parents are well-known actors and comedians. With that charmed pedigree, he has proven himself more than capable of following in their footsteps. Who is this star of "Zoolander" and "Meet the Parents??

Answer: Ben Stiller

This versatile actor is the son of Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara. He began his career as a child appearing on his mother's TV show "Kate McShane." From there he appeared on TV and Broadway. He moved into film and later behind the camera as a director. While Ben is mostly known for comedic roles, he has taken on more dramatic roles in films such as "Permanent Midnight" and "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty."
9. To her many fans she is known as "The Divine Miss M." As an actress, comedienne, and singer she is unique. If you like beaches and wind beneath your wings, you can surely name this funny lady.

Answer: Bette Midler

Bette started her career appearing in Off-Broadway plays. Her first major film role was the 1980 drama "The Rose." She received an Academy Award nomination and won a Golden Globe Award for her starring role in that film. She has appeared in such films as "The First Wives Club," "Drowning Mona," and "Big Business." In 2000 she had her own sitcom "Bette" pretty much playing herself.

As a vocalist, Bette can belt out a tune with the best of them. She has toured the world as a singer and some of those tours served a humanitarian purpose. Those humanitarian efforts haven't been just limited to singing.

In 1995 she founded the New York Restoration Project which has focused on revitalizing parks in disadvantaged New York City neighborhoods.
10. I must end this quiz with a tribute to one of my all-time favorite celebrities. She passed away unexpectedly in September 2014. Many fans, myself included, mourned the loss of this dynamic octogenarian. "Can we talk?" Who is she?

Answer: Joan Rivers

Few people had mixed feelings for Joan. She was one of those personalities you either liked or didn't. As a struggling comedienne, Joan worked hard to build her career in stand-up comedy. She performed at venues large and small. Her public persona was quite different from her private, everyday self. Joan was extremely generous and caring. Most of her fans knew that but others simply saw her as another brash comic.

Not only did she perform comedy routines and host "Fashion Police" with her daughter Melissa, she provided comedic material for television shows.

She was a best-selling author and won a Daytime Emmy for hosting the talk show "The Joan Rivers Show." Joan also received a posthumous Grammy Award for her Best Spoken Word album "Diary of a Mad Diva" in 2015.
