Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Men are like wine - some turn to vinegar, but the best improve with age", was famously said by which person?

Answer: Pope John XXIII

John XXIII was the Bishop of Rome from 1958-63 and was much loved by Roman Catholics. He is still referred to today as "il Papa buono" or "The Good Pope" and in 2013 was declared a saint by Pope Francis, who echoed John's comments. When at an audience with cardinals, he urged people to welcome growing old as like being "a good wine that gets better with age".
2. Mexican film director Luis Bunuel, who made "Robinson Crusoe" (1954) starring Oscar nominee Dan O'Herhily, once said, "Age is something that doesn't matter, unless you are a ------".

Answer: Cheese

Although known for his surrealist movies, over a fifty year period Bunuel's films encompassed genres such as documentary, comedy, western, crime and erotica, among others. The majority of his films were in Spanish or French with only "Robinson Crusoe" (1954) and "The Young One" (1960) being in English.
3. "Everything that goes up must come down. But there comes a time when not everything that's down can come up", is a quote from which star of vaudeville, film and television?

Answer: George Burns

As well as performing in vaudeville, Burns wrote ten books, released three albums, won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in "The Sunshine Boys" (1975), played Mr. Kite in the movie "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" (1978), and made almost 300 episodes of "The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show" (1950-58) for television.
4. "Last year my birthday cake looked like a prairie fire" is a quote from Rodney Dangerfield. How old was Dangerfield when he died?

Answer: 82

Rodney "I get no respect" Dangerfield was a stand up comedian, as well as an accomplished actor. He is known for his comedic roles in movies such as "Caddyshack" (1980) and "Easy Money" (1983), as well as serious roles in movies like "Natural Born Killers" (1994). He also played Satan's father Lucifer in "Little Nicky" (2000) and mentored comedian Jim Carrey.
5. "Middle age occurs when you are too young to take up golf and too old to rush up to the net", said which early 20th century New York Evening Mail columnist, known by his initials F.P.A.?

Answer: Franklin Pierce Adams

Adams is remembered for his newspaper column "The Conning Tower" and his poem, "Baseball's Sad Lexicon" (1910), which told the tale of the Chicago Cubs double play combination of Joe Tinker, Johnny Evers, and Frank Chance. Adams was played by Chip Zien in the 1994 movie starring Jennifer Jason Leigh, "Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle".
6. "You know you're getting old when you get that one candle on the cake. It's like, see if you can blow this out", said comedian Jerry Seinfeld. Who was the only cast member to appear in every episode of his TV show "Seinfeld?"

Answer: Jerry Seinfeld

"Seinfeld" ran for nine years from 1989 to 1998 with 180 episodes. In addition to appearing in all of them, Jerry also co-created the show, wrote for the show, and was executive producer. Dreyfus appeared in 172 episodes, while Richards and Alexander appeared in 173.
7. "You know you're old when someone compliments you on your alligator shoes, and you're barefoot" is a quote from which groundbreaking stand-up comedienne?

Answer: Phyllis Diller

Stars such as Ellen DeGeneres, Roseanne Barr and Joan Rivers have acknowledged the debt they owe to Diller for paving the way for female comics. She acknowledged her plastic surgery as an attempt to look younger, saying of her face lift, "I got sick and tired of having the dog drag me out to the yard and bury me".

She voiced Thelma Griffin (Peter's mother) in three episodes of "Family Guy".
8. "Middle age is having a choice between two temptations and choosing the one that'll get you home earlier", said Dan Bennett. Apart from witty quotes, what does Bennett do well, so well, in fact, that he received four gold medals for it?

Answer: Juggling

Bennett has a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics, and it was while teaching that he found he was mixing comedy and juggling into his lessons. While teaching a class on ballistics he came up with the feature which is still the highlight of his shows - catching a bowling ball on his head! Not only does he have his gold medals for juggling, he was listed in 1990 "Guinness Book of World Records" for numbers juggling when he kept ten bean bags in the air.
9. "At my age my best birth control is just to leave the lights on", said which much missed comic?

Answer: Joan Rivers

Queen of acerbic wit, Rivers died in 2014; throughout her career she refused to apologise for upsetting people with her humour. She made many jokes about Elizabeth Taylor's weight and her other targets included Michael Jackson and Roman Polanski, as well as the Holocaust, and, towards the end of her life, the kidnapping victims of Ariel Castro.
10. English comedian Sir Norman Wisdom said, "As you get older, three things happen. The first is your memory goes". What, according, to Sir Norman are the other two things?

Answer: I Can't Remember

Wisdom retired from acting at age 90, but I don't think that was the age he felt he had started to get old, as he seemed to have no trouble remembering his lines. He was loved all over the world, especially in Albania for some reason, and was called "my favourite clown" by Charlie Chaplin.
