Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you The McIntyre Sisters. Who? OK, they were known as Patience and Prudence, singing siblings from the 1950s. Their father, Mark led an orchestra and he thought his angelic sounding little darlins' could make beautiful music together. They proved him right in 1956, when they recorded a song that reached number four on the Billboard charts. What was the title?

Answer: Tonight You Belong to Me

The song was co-written by famed lyricist Billy Rose and composer Lee David (1926). It was first recorded in 1926 by Irving Kaufman and later by Frankie Laine (1952). The version recorded as a demo at Liberty Records in 1956 by 11 year old Prudence and 14 year old Patience would become the best selling rendition of them all.
"A Smile and a Ribbon" was the "B' side. "Gonna Get Along Without Ya Now" was a hit for the lil' gals later in the same year. America became familiar with it when they appeared and performed on "The Perry Como TV Show". That little ditty made it to number 11 on the Billboard charts, four years after Teresa Brewer had taken it to number 25. It was the last big hit of their feel-good but fleeting career.

Interesting fact: Back in the 1940s, Patience and Prudence's piano playin' papa accompanied a young singer named Francis Albert Sinatra.
2. The acting sisters known as Meg and Jennifer Tilly have made more than 70 movies and have both been nominated for an Academy Award. They were raised in British Columbia, Canada by their mom, Patricia Tilly, after their parents divorced. Their father was an automobile dealer who provided them with their original birth surname. Do you know what it was? Hint: his first name was not Charlie.

Answer: Chan

His first name was Harry. Jen was born in 1958. Of the over 50 movies she made, "No Small Affair" (1984) was her first, but it was her 12th flick, "The Fabulous Baker Boys" (1989) with Michelle Pfeiffer, that was her first big success. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in "Bullets Over Broadway", Woody Allen's zany comedy (1994). She has appeared on numerous TV shows including "Hill Street Blues", "Cheers" and "Frasier". She is also a champion poker player having won a couple of tournaments and winning over $650,000 in the process.
Meg came along in 1960 and has danced on Broadway and authored several books, including "First Time" (2008). She has made over 20 Hollywood films and several TV movies. Her Oscar nomination came for her work in "Agnes of God" (1985). She also appeared in "The Big Chill" (1983) and "The Two Jakes" (1990) with Jack Nicholson.

Interesting fact: Meg, who was a ballet dancer in her teens, saw her dreams of being a professional hoofer shatterered, when she was injured after a partner dropped her as she was auditioning for a role in "Fame" (1980).
3. Here they are, the ones you've been waiting for, those Hungarian beauties, The Gabor Sisters. Magda, Eva and Zsa Zsa were all born in Budapest. They would become famous for their recurring roles of brides rather than for any stellar acting work they did. What was the name of the TV sitcom Eva starred in, from 1965-1971?

Answer: Green Acres

Eva acted the role of Lisa Douglas in 170 episodes of the show. She appeared in 20 something movies, including "Gigi" (1958) with Leslie Caron and Maurice Chevalier. She died while vacationing in Mexico (1995), as the result of a bathtub fall.
Since I'm reluctant to call Zsa Zsa an actress, let me just say that she appeared in over 40 movies, including the elegant "Won Ton Ton, the Dog Who Saved Hollywood" (1976) and the unforgettable classic "Frankenstein's Great Aunt Tillie" (1984). She was voted Miss Hungary in 1936.
Magda, who was married nine times, did nothing noteworthy in Hollywood, but she did help make several divorce attorneys quite wealthy.

Interesting note: Actor George Sanders, for some reason took a pass on Eva, but decided to marry Zsa Zsa (1949-1954) and then to give it a shot with Magda (1970-1971). He committed suicide in 1972.(No comment).
4. Pick just about any genre of music starting from the early 1970s, be it rock, soul, jazz, disco, blues etc. and it's a pretty good guess that you heard some of it sung by the Pointer Sisters. They went on, in various iterations to record over 25 albums and more than 50 singles. Take your time and see if you know which 1971 hit stayed at number two for three consecutive weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1981?

Answer: Slow Hand

"He's So Shy" was a hit in 1980 and "I'm So Excited" made a splash in 1982. "Fire", (1978) was their first gold single. The genesis of the group goes back to 1969 when the duo of Bonnie and June recorded as Pointers, a Pair. They became a trio when Anita joined them and later a quartet when Ruth came aboard in 1972. Bonnie left the group to pursue what turned out to be a mediocre solo career in 1978. Anita, Ruth and June became The Pointer Sisters who rocked the music world, mostly in the 70s and 80s, belting out hit after hit.
They won Grammy Awards for "Fairytale" (1975), "Jump(for My Love)" (1985) and "Automatic", also in '85. In 1994 they were awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and were also inducted into the Soul Train Hall of Fame. They were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2005.

Interesting fact: In 1974 they became the first African American female singers ever to play a gig at The Grand Old Opry.

Janet did her one better, exposing a certain portion of her anatomy on live TV in 2004 when her famous "wardrobe malfunction" occurred. On what sitcom did she appear in 1978-1979?

Answer: Good Times

She played Penny Gordon Woods, on that DY-NO-MITE sitcom, alongside Jimmie Walker. On April 10, 2004 she hosted "Saturday Night Live". She has won over 30 BET Awards (Black Entertainment Awards).
LaToya's musical career has spanned over 40 years, including a tap dancing routine with her brothers in Las Vegas when she was 16. Her first appearance in "Playboy" generated sales of over eight million copies of the magazine. Her album "Home" (2009), was an homage to her brother, Michael, who died August 29, 2009. LaToya's memoir, "Starting Over" was relased in 2011.

Interesting fact: Janet was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1990.

Olivia de Havilland was born July 1, 1916 and Ms Fontaine, whose birth name is Joan de Beauvoir de Havilland, arrived a year later on October 22, 1917.
They both became U.S. citizens in the early 1940s. Joan's Oscar came for "Suspicion" (1941). Olivia's were for "To Each His Own" (1946) and "The Heiress" (1949). She is best remembered for her role as Melanie Hamilton Wilkes in "Gone With the Wind" (1939). That film earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Joan received a Best Actress nomination for Alfred Hitchcock's first American film, "Rebecca" (1940). Her autobiography "No Bed of Roses" was published in 1978.

Interesting fact: When Joan Fontaine won the Academy Award for Best Actress for "Suspicion" (which co-starred Cary Grant) she became the only actress to capture that Oscar in a movie directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
7. Sisters Vicki and Debbi Petterson were members of a popular 1980s all-girls band. They performed on Cyndi Lauper's Fun Tour (1983-1985), and were included on her album "True Colors" (1986). They recorded numerous hits, including "Manic Monday" and "Walk Like an Egyptian". Both songs were on their most popular album, "Different Light" (1986). What was the name of their group?

Answer: The Bangles

The band which they started, along with Susanna Hoffs in 1980, was originally called The Colors. "Manic Monday" reached number two in the U.S and "Walk Like an Egyptian" made it all the way to the top of the charts.
When the band disbanded in 1989 Vicki joined The Continental Drifters and later, The Psycho Sisters. Both groups featured Susan Cowsill of The Cowsills.
Debbie made an attempt at a solo career in 1990, but in 1992 she decided to start another group called Kindred Spirit which featured Siobhan Maher who had been a singer with the River City People.

Interesting fact: Their big 1986 hit, "Manic Monday" was writtten by Prince.
8. Let's head back across the pond, shall we? Here we meet the London born sisters Joan and Jackie Collins. Joan is best known as an actress and Jackie as a novelist, although both have acted and written. Joan is best known for her role of Alexis Carrington on a famous American TV series. Can you remember the title of the show for which she won a Golden Globe (1983)?

Answer: Dynasty

Joan's career was mostly on film as she made over 60 movies and appeared on more than 70 TV shows. Her first Hollywood flick was "Land of the Pharaohs" (1955) and she diversified when she played in the last of the Hope, Crosby, Lamour, "Road to" comedy films in "Road to Hong Kong" (1962). She has also written more than 15 books, both fiction and nonfiction, which have sold over 50 million copies.
Jackie who has not written anything that might be confused with great literature, has nonetheless written over 25 popular novels. Each one has made it onto the N.Y. Times Bestseller List, including her biggest selling tale, "Hollywood Wives" (1983). It reached number one, and sold over 15 million copies. In total, sales of her books have reached over 400 million copies and been translated into 40 languages. Who would have guessed that when she was expelled from high school at age 15?

Interesting fact: In 1996, Joan was honored by Queen Elizabeth II, when she was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) for her contribution to the Arts and for her work in the name of charity.
9. Jane and Audrey Cotter, are better known as Jayne and Audrey Meadows. Jayne was born in 1920, when their parents were in China, while Audrey waited to be born (1922) after they returned to America. Jayne is probably best known as the wife of Steve Allen, but Audrey is best remembered for her iconic role of Mrs. Ralph Kramden on "The Honeymooners" (1955-1956). What was her character's first name?

Answer: Alice

"The Honeymooners" started as a 10-15 minute sketch on "The Cavalcade of Stars". When "The Honeymooners" was spun off into a 30 minute show of its own, Audrey played Alice in all 39 classic episodes, which aired in 1954-1955. In her role, she was the long suffering wife of Ralph, (Gleason) a blustering, boastful, bloviating, blowhard Brooklyn bus driver. She later made a few movies including "That Touch of Mink" (1962) and "Take Her, She's Mine" (1963). She has been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Big sister Jane chose the big screen, making over 15 flicks including her first, "Undercurrent" (1946) with Katherine Hepburn, and "David and Bathsheba", Darryl Zanuck's 1957 epic.
In 1954 she got hitched to Steve Allen, the first host of the "Tonight Show". On TV, she was a regular panelist on a couple of game shows, "To Tell the Truth" and "I've Got a Secret".

Well, Webb was their birth name, but we know them better as those country croonin' sisters, Crystal Gayle and her sister, who is almost old enough to be her mother, Loretta Lynn. Crystal (born Brenda Gale Webb in 1951) is the youngest of eight kids and the first one to do what?

Answer: Be born in a hospital

Crystal joined the clan January 9, 1951, 19 years after Loretta was born on April 14, 1932. In fact as a teenager Crystal used to accompany Loretta's tour during school summer vacations. Crystal, known for her long dark hair and her beautiful blue eyes, as well as for her hauntingly earthy singing voice has recorded over 60 singles. Her most famous and popular one was "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue". That song won her the Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance (1978). She has recorded over 25 albums and had 18 number one country hit singles.
Loretta Webb was married at age 15 and started a family very shortly thereafter. She somehow managed to record over 70 singles and had 16 number one country hits. She will forever be linked to her autobiographical rendition of "Coal Miner's Daughter", which made it to number one on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart on December 19, 1970. Both her autobiography (1976) and a biopic of her life (1980) are titled "Coal Miner's Daughter".
