Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Diamond had a few small roles in television and film before being cast as a nerd in "Good Morning, Miss Bliss." What was the name of the nerdy character Diamond played in the show, and would continue to play for many years to come?

Answer: Samuel "Screech" Powers

Screech was the quintessential nerd. Though he had the academic intelligence to build a functioning robot, he would often say or do deeply stupid things just for the sake of plot advancement. He would wear garish outfits and would often be the butt of other character's jokes.
2. Diamond was the only actor to appear in every iteration of "Saved By The Bell," the show that "Good Morning, Miss Bliss" became. In fact, he appeared in over 250 verified TV episodes and TV movies as "Screech." In which teenage TV comedy drama outside of the "Saved by the Bell" franchise did he also play Screech?

Answer: Hang Time

Not only was Diamond in every version of "Saved by the Bell," he was in every episode of every version. Diamond played Screech for 13 episodes of "Good Morning, Miss Bliss" and 86 episodes of "Saved By The Bell," as well as TV movie "Saved by the Bell: Hawaiian Style." Diamond then played Screech during 19 episodes of "Saved by the Bell: The College Years" alongside some other "Saved By The Bell" alumni.

He was in the TV movie "Saved by the Bell: Wedding in Las Vegas" before appearing in 130 episodes of "Saved by the Bell: The New Class" as Principal Belding's assistant. Finally, he appeared as Screech in an episode of "Hang Time" (1995) for a total of 251 outings as Screech!
3. The role of Screech understandably cast a long shadow over Diamond's career, and many of his on-screen appearances in the new millennium have been minor roles, cameos as himself, and on reality television. In which of the following reality contests has he NOT taken part?

Answer: Worst Cooks in America: Celebrity Edition

Diamond was the fourth of thirteen celebrities to leave the house on the UK's "Celebrity Big Brother 12." He was the seventh of ten to go home on "Hulk Hogan's Celebrity Championship Wrestling" and on "Celebrity Fit Club" season 5 he lost the second least body weight out of the eight competing celebrities, despite being the second heaviest going in. He had notable confrontations with the show's host, the show's trainer and other competing celebrities.

He has not appeared on "Worst Cooks in America," but previous winners of the celebrity edition include Jenni "JWoww" Farley, Perez Hilton and La Toya Jackson.
4. Diamond also appeared on FOX's "Celebrity Boxing" - a reality show pitching celebrities against each other in one off boxing matches. Diamond faced another classic sitcom geek, Ron Palillo, AKA Horshack from "Welcome Back, Kotter." What was controversial about the event?

Answer: Diamond ridiculously outweighed Palillo

The odds were heavily in Diamond's favour - he was 25 whilst Palillo was 53, he weighed 198 lbs whilst Palillo weighed 144, and his height was recorded as 6'0" with a 74" reach, whereas Palillo measured 5'7" with a reach of 68". Diamond showed no qualms about attacking Palillo full force, causing him to fall to the ground twice and giving him two black eyes. Diamond also taunted Palillo and played to the audience and the camera before the referee called him as the winner 1:23 into the second two-minute round.

Later that year, TV Guide would name Celebrity Boxing the sixth worst show of all time.
5. In 2006 Diamond asked fans to buy "D-shirts," t-shirts of his design, in order to help him keep his home in Wisconsin. What slogan was written on the back?

Answer: I paid $15.00 to save Screeech's house.

No, that's not a typo - despite portraying the character for over a decade, Diamond has no rights to the character of Screech, so an extra "e" was added to skirt copyright law, Similarly, his website urged "First we rallied to Free Wynona. The next time we Voted For Pedro. This time we'll Save Screeech's House!"
The front of the t-shirt had a black and white photo of Diamond holding a cardboard sign reading "SAVE MY HOUSE" above the URL WWW.GETDSHIRTS.COM, written in a garish font. The t-shirts cost $15 as standard or $20 signed. Diamond claimed he needed to sell 30,000 within forty days to avoid being evicted. A number of fans claimed not to have received the shirts for which they paid.
Diamond also tried selling "Sponsorship Bricks" - 88 x 31 pixel virtual banners that crudely formed a house. Given one inch-wide "brick" cost $1,000, and the "house" was not even prominently placed on the website it is not surprising this didn't take off.
6. In 2009, Dustin released a memoir/tell-all entitled "Behind the Bell," once again simultaneously trying to distance himself from the Screech image and profit from the brand recognition. He envisions a film featuring the core "Saved by the Bell" cast playing against type - what would his character be?

Answer: A serial killer

Diamond has a low view of his former cast-mates and their acting chops. After dreaming up demeaning roles with which he thinks his old colleagues would struggle, he caps it off like this:

"I'll play the serial killer. Twenty minutes into that film, if everyone is doing his or her job, no one in the audience would recognize anyone from the gang from Bayside."
7. Next to "Screech," the character Diamond has played the most in movies is himself. In which of these movies does Diamond not poke fun at his persona in a cameo role?

Answer: Scavenger Killers

In "Scavenger Killers" (2014), Diamond plays an FBI agent who is "a Tourette's Syndrome introvert with psychic abilities." In "Made" (2001), a wannabe gangster played by Vince Vaughn is outraged when he is left outside of an LA nightclub whilst Diamond is waved right in.

In "Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star" (2003), Diamond is one of a number of former child actors who attend the same support group as David Spade's Dickie Roberts. In "Pauly Shore Is Dead" (2003), Diamond is one of about forty celebrities who cameo as themselves in Pauly Shore's mockumentary.
8. Besides being an actor, comedian, author, director, producer, reality star, and t-shirt salesman, since 2000 Diamond has been the bass player for which band?

Answer: Salty The Pocketknife

There is surprisingly little information about Salty The Pocketknife online, especially if you are reluctant to actually listen to the music. Like much of Diamond's post-"Screech" career there seems to be a need to prove how "adult" the band is with songs about topics such as abortion ("Sever"). Diamond said in a 2004 interview that he had been involved with music for about twenty-two years, first learning how to play classical guitar from his father.

He has been playing bass since 1994.
9. Diamond has a black belt in karate.

Answer: True

Though he has an interest in some of the nerdy passions of his on-screen counterpart, Diamond has also managed to work his way up to black belt. "Screech and I have a lot in common. We are both strange, funny, interested in computers, good at chess, and chick magnets." The only video on his YouTube channel is of himself patrolling Times Square dressed as a ninja, though there is regrettably no demonstration of his karate skills.
10. True or false: Diamond was charged with second-degree murder after stabbing a man at a bar?

Answer: False

Though Diamond was arrested on Christmas Day, 2014, after stabbing a man at a Wisconsin bar, the injuries sustained were not lethal, and Diamond was later convicted with carrying a concealed weapon and disorderly conduct. He was sentenced to four months in prison, released after three and was then re-arrested for probation violation.

He has since continued to find work both on and off screen.
