Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1975, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" became only the second film to sweep the Oscars in all five major categories. Which future Best Actor Oscar-winner collected the Best Picture Oscar as one of the film's two co-producers?

Answer: Michael Douglas

"One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" matched the achievement of "It Happened One Night" in 1934 by winning all five major Oscars. Best Director went to Milos Forman and Best Adapted Screenplay to Laurence Hauben and Bo Goldman. The major acting awards were won by Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher.

The Oscar for Best Picture was claimed by the film's two co-producers, Michael Douglas and Saul Zaentz. Douglas would go on to win the Best Actor award for "Wall Street" in 1987. "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" was the first of many films produced by Douglas.

His later successful movies include "The China Syndrome", "Romancing the Stone", "Starman", "The Jewel of the Nile", "Flatliners", "Double Impact" and "Face/Off".
2. Perhaps best-remembered for his performance as Jesus Christ in the 1965 epic "The Greatest Story Ever Told", in which country was actor Max von Sydow born?

Answer: Sweden

Born Carl Adolf von Sydow in 1929 in the city of Lund on the southern tip of Sweden, Max von Sydow acquired French citizenship in 2002. He made his film debut in 1949 and, in the late 1950s and early 1960s, appeared in numerous films directed by his fellow countryman Ingmar Bergman. Film buffs will recall the famous scene from "The Seventh Seal" where he plays chess with Death. In addition to Sydow's performance as Christ, his memorable roles include Father Lankester Merrin in "The Exorcist" in 1973, the assassin Joubert in "Three Days of the Condor" in 1975, Ming the Merciless in the sci-fi film "Flash Gordon" in 1980 and James Bond's arch-rival Ernst Stavro Blofeld in "Never Say Never Again" in 1983.
3. Which legendary TV actress, born in Jamestown NY in 1911, began her career on Broadway as an 18-year-old using the stage name Diane Belmont?

Answer: Lucille Ball

Comedienne, model, film and television actress and studio executive, Lucille Désirée Ball achieved numerous TV firsts in her lifetime. She graced the cover of the very first issue of "TV Guide" in April 1953, and subsequently appeared on the cover 45 times, far more than anyone else in the publication's history.

Her studio, Desilu (no other woman had previously run a TV studio) went on to produce numerous blockbuster shows in addition to "I Love Lucy". Its other productions include "Hogan's Heroes", "The Andy Griffith Show", "Mission: Impossible", "The Untouchables", "I Spy" and "Star Trek". Of the alternatives, best-known for her role as the family matriarch Miss Ellie Ewing in "Dallas" and for the Hitchcock film "Vertigo", Barbara Bel Geddes was born in NYC in 1922.

The star of "Golden Girls" and "Maude", Bea Arthur was born Bernice Frankel also in NYC in 1922. Singer, dancer and actress Yvonne de Carlo, whose film credits include the epic 1956 film "The Ten Commandments", is best-known today as Herman's wife Lily in "The Munsters".

She was born Margaret Yvonne Middleton in Vancouver BC, Canada in 1922.
4. In his late 60s by this time, which actor earned the last of his four Best Actor Oscar nominations playing the drug-dealing Lou Pascal in the 1980 romantic crime film "Atlantic City"?

Answer: Burt Lancaster

Born Burton Stephen Lancaster in New York City in 1913, Burt Lancaster made his film debut in 1946 and built his early career playing tough-guy roles. He was first nominated for a Best Actor Oscar in 1953, playing 1st Sgt. Milton Warden in "From Here to Eternity".

In 1960, he won the Oscar for his performance as a con man in the title role of "Elmer Gantry". He was nominated again in 1962 for the title role, Robert Stroud, in "The Birdman of Alcatraz" and for a fourth time at the age of 67 for the romantic crime thriller "Atlantic City".

He also won BAFTA awards for the latter two of those films. Lancaster died in 1994, aged 80 and, in a 1999 poll for the American Film Institute, he was voted number 19 in the list of Greatest Male Stars of All Time.
5. The screen roles of which Oscar-winning actress, who died aged 96 in 2013, include Mrs de Winter, Lina McLaidlaw, Tessa Sanger, Johanna Franziska and Susan Lane?

Answer: Joan Fontaine

Born Joan de Beauvoir de Havilland in Tokyo, Japan in 1917, Joan Fontaine and her elder sister, Olivia de Havilland, were the first pair of sisters who have both won a lead acting Oscar (and more than 70 years later, in 2014, were still the only pair). Fontaine is also the only actor to have won an Oscar in an Alfred Hitchcock film (for "Suspicion" in 1941).
Fontaine played all of the roles mentioned in the question: the second Mrs de Winter in "Rebecca" (1940); Lina McLaidlaw in "Suspicion" (1941); Tessa Sanger in "The Constant Nymph" (1943); Countess Johanna Augusta Franziska in "Emperor Waltz" (1948) and Susan Lane in "Flight to Tangier" (1953).
The alternatives also all lived well into their 90s -- Hepburn died in 2003 aged 96, de Havilland celebrated her 98th birthday in July 2014 and Rainer was alive and well on her 104th birthday in January 2014.

Marlon Brando Jr. was born in Omaha NE in 1924 and is widely considered one of the greatest actors of all time. He made his film debut in 1950 and was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for four of his first six screen performances. Brando was nominated for Best Actor in 1951 for "A Streetcar Named Desire" (losing to Humphrey Bogart in "The African Queen"), in 1952 for "Viva Zapata!" (losing to Gary Cooper in "High Noon") and in 1953 for "Julius Caesar" (losing to William Holden in "Stalag 17"). He finally won at the fourth attempt, in 1954, for "On the Waterfront". His fifth nomination during the decade came in 1957, for "Sayonara".
In 1972, Brando won again, for "The Godfather" and he was nominated for a seventh and final time in 1973 for "Last Tango in Paris". In 1989, he was nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category, for "A Dry White Season".
Of the alternatives, Spencer Tracy was nominated three times in the 1950s: in 1950 for "Father of the Bride"; in 1955 for "Bad Day at Black Rock" and in 1958 for "The Old Man and the Sea". The other two were each nominated twice during the decade: James Stewart in 1950 for "Harvey" and in 1959 for "Anatomy of a Murder" and Kirk Douglas in 1952 for "The Bad and the Beautiful" and in 1956 for "Lust for Life".

She was nominated again in 1944 for Billy Wilder's "Double Indemnity". Stanwyck appeared in her first color film in 1947 and a year later earned her fourth Oscar nomination, co-starring with Burt Lancaster in "Sorry Wrong Number".

Although she never won a competitive Oscar, the Academy presented Stanwyck with an honorary award in 1982. The alternatives were also all nominated for Best Actress four times, although they all won at least once. Page was also nominated four times in the Best Supporting Actress category.

Answer: Angelina Jolie
