Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Christopher Michael Benoit was born on May 21, 1967. Where was he born?

Answer: Montreal, Canada

Chris grew up a huge wrestling fan in Canada, idolizing Bret Hart and the Dynamite Kid. His father wasn't a wrestling fan, but he and his mother both supported him and his wrestling endeavors as a child. Like many Canadian professional wrestlers, Benoit trained in Stu Hart's legendary Dungeon until 1985.
2. In June of 1986, Chris Benoit broke into the professional wrestling scene by wrestling in Japan. For three years he performed under his real name, but in 1989 Benoit began to wear a mask. What ring name did Chris take when he started to conceal his face?

Answer: Pegasus Kid

Benoit admittedly didn't enjoy the concept of wearing a mask at first, but eventually got used to it. Chris won his first championship in Japan during a match with Justin Liger in 1990. A year later, Benoit lost the title and mask in a rematch with Liger.

In June of 1992, Chris jumped ship and joined World Championship Wrestling. After a short attempt at teaming with fellow Canadian Biff Willington, Benoit headed back to Japan to continue training.
3. The "Crippler" nickname for Chris Benoit was born on tour with Extreme Championship Wrestling in 1994. He gained a reputation for constantly being rough with his opponents, even accidentally breaking Sabu's neck at an ECW Pay Per View. Benoit's run with ECW was short lived, however. In April of 1995, Chris was forced out of Extreme Championship Wrestling. Why couldn't he compete anymore?

Answer: Benoit's work visa expired.

Paul Heyman, then owner of Extreme Championship Wrestling, was supposed to renew Benoit's visa, but didn't do so on time. For the next couple of months, Chris went back to Japan. In November of 1995, World Championship Wrestling called up "The Crippler" and so began his next endeavor.
4. Chris Benoit's infamous missing tooth is due to a training accident.

Answer: False

On a radio interview in early 2002, Benoit admitted that the missing incisor was actually his dog's fault. While playing with his pooch, Benoit was headbutted in the jaw, jamming the tooth into his gums. He had to get it surgically removed.
5. World Championship Wrestling was home to Chris Benoit for a second time in 1995. After various try-outs with WCW, they finally recognized his talent. He kept his "Crippler" persona from Extreme Championship Wrestling and teamed with three other men as a "new" Four Horsemen. Which of the following was NOT one of Benoit's partners in this faction?

Answer: Randy Savage

The New Four Horsemen tried to take down Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage, but failed. Benoit and partner Brian Pillman broke out of Flair's team and started a feud.

Following this battle, Benoit was attacked by Kevin Sullivan, wrestler and promoter for World Championship Wrestling. These two started working an angle that involved Kevin's on screen manager and real life wife, Nancy. Benoit and Nancy actually began to see each other in real life, which caused problems backstage with Kevin and Chris. The two didn't see eye to eye, but none-the-less worked well together in the ring. Chris defeated Kevin in a retirement match at "Bash at the Beach" 1997.

Over the next three years in WCW, Benoit would go on to win several championships, but wasn't satisfied with the way he was being booked. After several reports that Benoit was planning to leave the company, the booking team gave him a vacant WCW World Heavyweight Championship. After a month or so of holding this title, Benoit was still fed up and left World Championship Wrestling with friends Perry Saturn, Dean Malenko, and Eddie Guerrero.
6. Perry Saturn, Dean Malenko, Eddie Guerrero, and Chris Benoit all jumped ship together and formed a team. The Radicalz came to World Wrestling Entertainment in 2000 and joined forces with Triple H. In the year that followed, Benoit quickly became the leader of the Radicalz and exploded with numerous Intercontinental Championship wins. How many times did Chris Benoit win the Intercontinental Championship in his first year with World Wrestling Entertainment?

Answer: Three

Within the next year and a half, the Radicalz went their separate ways and Benoit eventually teamed with Chris Jericho and won the WWE Tag Team Titles. In an historic event, Jericho and Benoit defended their titles on an episode of "Smackdown" in May of 2001. For the first time ever, a Tables, Ladders, and Chairs Match was broadcasted on television. Benoit and Jericho retained their titles, but Benoit broke his next in the process and was sidelined for over a year.
7. "Raw" and "Smackdown" became separate entities in 2003 and a huge World Wrestling Entertainment draft came about. Chris was injured, but was drafted anyway. Which brand drafted him: "Raw" or "Smackdown"?

Answer: Smackdown

Vince McMahon, the "owner" of "Smackdown" drafted Benoit, but after he recovered from his neck injury, Chris joined the "Raw" brand. Over the next year, Benoit won another Intercontinental Championship and the WWE Tag Team Titles (with Kurt Angle). The United States Championship was brought onto the "Smackdown" brand, with Benoit losing in the finals of a tournament to Eddie Guerrero. Before Benoit's biggest push of his career, he had a lengthy feud with Paul Heyman and Brock Lesnar.
8. Chris' time to shine atop World Wrestling Entertainment came in 2004. Paul Heyman, then General Manager of the "Smackdown" brand, swore Chris Benoit would never hold the World Heavyweight Championship. He made Benoit the number one entrant in that year's Royal Rumble Match, but that didn't stop the "Rabid Wolverine". After eliminating the Big Show, Benoit shocked the world by winning the Royal Rumble Match as the number one entrant. Following an exploitation of a loop-hole in the winner's contract, Benoit made the challenge to the World Heavyweight Champion, Triple H (who was on the "Raw" brand). Triple H had just finished a battle with Shawn Michaels, but the "Heartbreak Kid" wanted another shot. After many contract disputes, the three were placed in a Triple Threat Match at "Wrestlemania" 2004. Benoit won the World Heavyweight Championship and set an historic marker for this event. What was so special about the finish to the main event at "Wrestlemania" 2004?

Answer: It was the first time in "Wrestlemania" history that the main event was won by submission.

Benoit made the champion, Triple H, tap out to the "Crippler Crossface" marking the first time submission ended the main event at "Wrestlemania". Eddie Guerrero came to the ring to celebrate, as both had finally made it to the top.

The next couple of years were filled with highs and lows for Chris Benoit. He held on to the WWE World Championship until August of the same year, where he lost it to Randy Orton. Edge and Benoit won the WWE Tag Team Titles shortly after "Wrestlemania" and held on to them for a few weeks. Benoit would regain the same titles again in September of 2004 with Kurt Angle. His close friend, Eddie Guerrero, died in 2005 and Benoit took part in a memorial dedicated to his late friend.

In 2005, Benoit was drafted back to the "Smackdown" brand, where he would go on to win the United States Championship twice in two years.
9. You could say Benoit returned home in June of 2007, as he was drafted to the new "ECW" brand of World Wrestling Entertainment. After having a successful debut in a Tag Team Match, Chris entered a tournament to see who would be crowned the new ECW Champion. Little did we know, Chris Benoit would be wrestling his last match in the semi-final round of this very tournament. Who was Chris Benoit's last opponent before his death?

Answer: Elijah Burke

Benoit advanced to the finals of the tournament, where CM Punk awaited him. However, due to his untimely death, Benoit was pulled from the match and replaced with Johnny Nitro, who went on to win the gold. Stephanie McMahon stated in a later interview that Benoit was booked to win his third World Heavyweight Title that night.
10. Sadness struck the professional wrestling world in the summer of 2007 as Chris Benoit was found dead in his home in Atlanta, Georgia. On what day was Chris Benoit pronounced dead?

Answer: June 24, 2007

Chris Benoit, his wife Nancy, and his son Daniel were all found dead in their home on June 24, 2007. The wrestling world was shocked by the deaths. The following night, "Raw" was canceled and for three hours highlights of Chris Benoit and tributes by his closest friends were shown.

Despite the controversial death of this man, you cannot cover up his major accomplishments in professional wrestling. Chris Benoit was a six time Tag Team Champion, a four time WWE Intercontinental Champion, a five time United States Champion, and a two time World Champion. He won the Royal Rumble Match in 2004 and gave us many emotional moments to remember. Benoit will be missed and will surely go down in the history books as one of the best to ever lace up a pair of wrestling boots.
