Claudius believed a family man longed only for home not victory. He outlawed all marriages and made a law saying anyone who commits marriage ceremonies would be put to death.

When he saw the notice, St. Valentine declared that the emperor had declared war on families. He believed every citizen should fight back because marriages were apart of God's law. He told Titus it was impossible to outlaw something that had been created by God. Valentine told Titus marriages were the backbone of families and families were worth fighting for.

When Titus told Valentine that his words could cost him his life, Valentine asked Titus, "Wouldn't you rather die fighting for family than allow the family itself to die?"
