Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Long before he appeared on 'MAD' covers, what era did he first appear on the American scene?

Answer: 1800's

He first appeared in the 1800's in advertisements for dentists, etc.
2. What issue did he first appear on?

Answer: March 1955

The March 1955 issue was the first time he appeared on a cover, even though he was minuscule as part of a mail-order ad. (He was next to Marilyn Monroe, lucky dog!) After that, he appeared on the top of every issue's cover in an oval frame, until the following year in the December 1956 issue, when he finally appeared full-size on the cover, painted by Norman Mongo and finally named on that cover "Alfred E. Neuman". (Mad writer Jerry DeFusco later said the "E" supposedly stood for "Enigma"!)
3. Who was the first artist to paint him on a cover?

Answer: Norman Mingo

Mingo's rendition on the December 1956 issue made Alfred the 'MAD' mascot for all time. The others are paperback cover artists.
4. Who was his equally idiotic-looking girlfriend?

Answer: Moxie Cowznofwski

She only appeared with Alfred, alas, on three covers.
5. What year did he first run for President?

Answer: 1956

Alfie ran as a "write-in" candidate. He also ran in 1960; thank God JFK won!
6. What TV comedian appeared with him on a cover?

Answer: Jerry Seinfeld

On 'Seinfeld', Newman was the obnoxious fat mailman played by Wayne Knight. On the cover, Jerry said 'Hellooo, Neuman!' to Alfred!
7. Name the comic book hero who appeared on five covers with Alfred.

Answer: Batman

Superman only showed on three covers. Batman first showed up in 1966, when the campy Adam West version hit TV. Then, in the 80's and 90's, the big-screen versions appeared on the covers.
8. What classic 30's movie did he help spoof on a cover?

Answer: King Kong

'King Kong' was a favorite of 'MAD' publisher William Gaines, so they had Alfred rampage on the Empire State and apes flying the planes! A classic!
9. What is NOT a facial trait of Alfred's?

Answer: double chin

All other traits instantly identify him.
10. What is his motto?

Answer: What, Me Worry?

Pretty much a 'gimme', huh?
