Answer: Charterhouse Group

In 1990, Alton Towers became part of the Tussauds group. This group owned many tourist attractions including Madame Tussauds, the London Planetarium, Warwick Castle, Chessington World of Adventures and Thorpe Park. In 1998, Tussauds were bought by the Charterhouse group.
3. Yes or No: Is the Alton Towers theme park open all year round?

Answer: No

The park is open from mid March until the end of October each year. The final week encompasses their infamous firework displays in the evenings. However, the Alton Towers Hotel is 'open all year round excluding the 24th to 30th December.'
4. Which of these rides has not been an Alton Towers roller coaster?

Answer: The Big One

The Big One is a roller coaster from Blackpool Pleasure beach. The rest are all from Alton Towers, with Air being the newest opened to the public in 2002.
5. When did the Alton Towers theme park first open?

Answer: 1980

Alton Towers itself dates back to around the 8th century. It's gardens were restored through the late 1900's but it was in 1980 that the idea of a theme park took off. The first main attraction in the park was the Corkscrew. When it opened, it was the first double corkscrew roller coaster in the UK.
6. What minimum height requirement was enforced to ride on the Nemesis?

Answer: 1.4m

Oblivion, Ripsaw and Air also have a height restriction of 1.4m tall. These are some of the big white knuckle rides in the park. For children who want to experience the thrills of big rides but are not quite tall enough, I recommend rides like the Corkscrew, the Black Hole and Submission. To ride these you have to pass the minimum height requirement of 1.2m
7. In the year 2000, what was the approximate number of visitors to Alton Towers each year?

Answer: 2-3 million

The official figures for the year 2000 are '2.45 million' and for 1999 '2.65 million.' That's a lot of hot dogs being sold!
8. Alton Towers introduced the worlds first vertical drop roller coaster in 1998. What is the name of this ride?

Answer: Oblivion

This roller coaster reaches speeds of 110km per hour and reaches 4.5G's. It sends you plummeting down a 60 metre drop into a big dark hole covered by steam.... but not before it has held you at the very top for a few seconds looking straight down!
9. Which major ride was officially launched on 19th March 1994?

Answer: Nemesis

Nemesis cost £10 million to build and was the worlds first legs free, inverted roller coaster. The ride lasts 160 seconds reaching speeds of 110km per hour. Eight years later, Nemesis is still voted as the thrill seekers favourite UK ride.
10. What is the name of the ride that was first installed in 1996, that was a popular ride designed for young children?
