Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Eyes Wide Shut' starred Tom Cruise and his then wife Nicole Kidman. The bizarre story of love and infidelity was directed by Stanley Kubrick in 1999 and based on a book by which Austrian novelist?

Answer: Arthur Schnitzler

Arthur Schnitzler's 1926 novella called 'Traumnovelle' was the inspiration for Kubrick's last movie. Kubrick directed, produced and co-wrote the movie, dying a mere six days after showing Warner Bros. the final cut of his final movie. Starring Cruise and Kidman, the movie is about their characters' marriage and exploration of extra-marital relationships.

The original book 'Traumnovelle' was also known as 'Dream Story' in English. Set in Vienna, the novel is about a Viennese doctor and his wife. Kubrick read the book in 1968 and wanted to make a film adaptation of it, but it took over thirty years for it to hit the big screen.
2. Time to shut your eyes and have a snooze? A trio of British comedians by the names of Tim Brooke-Taylor, Graeme Garden and Bill Oddie created a TV series in which one of the episodes was called 'Snooze'. By what name were the trio known as?

Answer: The Goodies

The Goodies were a huge hit in the 1970s with their slightly wacky and off-beat comedy show. The three men got up to all sorts of silly mischief in the show, often with crazy Rube Goldberg type gadgets they'd invented. The episode called 'Snooze' starts off with the three guys asleep in their beds when an alarm clock starts to sound. Graham had rigged the alarm clock to a device designed to have this world ready for him before he had arisen from his bed. It would make his breakfast, turn the lights on and have the newspaper at hand, ready for his perusal.

From that point, the episode develops as Graham explains that the alarm clock saves him time and stress. Tim thinks it's a bit overkill, and Bill says that he never sleeps well. Bill's insomnia developed from sleeping in a basement as a child to prevent accidents such as falling out of windows while sleepwalking.

The trio are then asked to design a marketing campaign for a sleeping tablet by the name of Venom. Calling the tablets Snooze had the desired effect and soon Graham started work on an even better version of the tablets. Everyone who tried the new version fell asleep and Graham then needed to create an antidote. The antidote to Snooze was going to be discreetly placed in London's water supply but, as often happened on 'The Goodies', the plan went awry and all of the antidote mixture fell into the water. It reversed the effects of Snooze but also had an enhanced effect, creating more chaos and ruining the company who originally came to the team for marketing help.
3. There is video game which features sibling characters called Ruff and Tumble who need to capture objects from a man called Nitekap. With a title pertaining to having one's eyes shut, what is this game called?

Answer: 40 Winks

'40 Winks' was developed as a game for PlayStation. A player assumes the control of either Ruff or Tumble with a mission to obtain either moon or Z-shaped tokens from Nitekap or his collaborator Threadbare. These tokens are called 'winks' - the white winks create dreams and the green winks, called 'hoodwinks', create nightmares. Players travel through various dream worlds as they progress through the game and they can also metamorphose into different types of characters such as a robot or a ninja.
4. Anyone who owns a cat knows they love to close their eyes and catnap, anywhere and anytime. A British animator has delighted cat lovers around the world with stories of his cat and its exploits, including in an episode called 'Catnap'. What are these books, newspaper cartoons and the animated cartoon series called?

Answer: Simon's Cat

'Simon's Cat' is the work of Simon Tofield and stars a nameless cat who uses its feline ingenuity to get its owner to give it food. The cat in question is an amalgamation of Tofield's own cats called Teddy, Hugh, Jess and Maisie, with Hugh being the main source of inspiration. Aside from Simon and the cat, other characters in the series include Simon's sister's dog, a hedgehog, bird, bunny and a garden gnome who the cat seems to think is alive.
5. In 1963, a man decided to film his close friend for over five hours while he slept. He created a movie from the footage and called the result 'Sleep.' Which New York artist, better known for his pop art creations, created 'Sleep'?

Answer: Andy Warhol

If you thought the premise of the movie a little tiresome, you weren't alone. The movie's premiere only attracted nine people and two of them walked out within the first sixty minutes. I think I would have been one of them unless I'd fallen asleep. Warhol wanted to create an 'anti-film' and in the subsequent years managed to create an eight-hour-long movie called 'Empire'.
6. John Lennon loved spending time in his bed, whether he was sleeping or wide awake. This inspired a Beatles song which appeared on the British version of the 1966 'Revolver' album. Which of these options is that song inspired, at least in part, by keeping the writer's eyes closed?

Answer: I'm Only Sleeping

'I'm Only Sleeping' was recorded over several days in 1966. While the basic idea of the song was quickly scrawled on the back of an envelope, the recording and perfecting of the sounds the band was after took several days. The Beatles' US album called 'Yesterday and Today' contained 'I'm Only Sleeping' rather than 'Revolver' which carried the song in the UK and other nations.
7. Even princesses need to close their eyes now and then, and fairy tales sometimes have them sleeping for a hundred years. With a shorter but similar story to Walt Disney's 'Sleeping Beauty' (1959), what name did the Brothers Grimm call the sleeping princess in their tale?

Answer: Little Briar Rose

The fairy tale of a sleeping princess can trace its roots back to the early-mid 1300s with an oral folk tale called 'Perceforest'. This was first published in 1528. Charles Perrault used 'Perceforest' as the basis for his story called 'The Sleeping Beauty' which was published in 1697, and the Brothers Grimm followed up with 'Little Briar Rose' in the early 1800s.

The essence of the story is the same but later versions have become more elaborate. The original Grimms Brothers tale only filled three pages. Nevertheless, the princess was born (as predicted by a fish), grew to 15 years of age, was pricked by a spindle, slept for one hundred years and was finally awoken by a kiss from a prince. And yes, they all lived happily ever after!
8. Everyone needs to close their eyes at times, even rock bands. A band formed in Portland, Oregon, released an album called 'Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia'. On that album was a song called 'Sleep'. Who was this band?

Answer: The Dandy Warhols

Deriving their name from Andy Warhol, the Dandy Warhols formed in 1994. 'Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia' was their third album and it received a warm reception from fans and critics alike. The album contains the song 'Bohemian Like You' which gained fame by being on 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' and in commercials. 'Sleep' is almost six minutes long yet contains the few lyrics below:

'Well I could sleep forever,
but it's of her I dream
If I could sleep forever,
I could forget about everything

If I could sleep forever
If I could sleep forever
If I could sleep forever
Oh oh-oh oh'
9. Sleepy is one of Walt Disney's Seven Dwarfs from the movie 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs'. While the dwarfs all had distinctive characteristics, one of Sleepy's was that something kept following and annoying him. What was it?

Answer: A fly

Aside from being sleepy enough to not sing 'Heigh Ho', Sleepy was also troubled by a fly which kept buzzing around him. The little insect would buzz around his face, causing Sleepy to swat at it. Missing the fly but hitting objects around him created mishaps around Sleepy.
10. Which Georgia-born country singer not only has a name which sounds like he needs a nap, but released an album which seems to defy his need for sleep as it's called 'Up All Night'?

Answer: Kip Moore

Kip Christian Moore (born April 1, 1980) released his debut album 'Up All Night' in 2012. His single releases include 'Young Love', 'Dirt Road' and 'I'm to Blame'.

Born in Georgia, his musicianship began while at community college. After travelling and surfing in Hawaii, he moved to Nashville. After managing a retail store for four years, a recording contract was signed leading to his debut single, 'Mary Was the Marrying Kind' being released in 2011.
