Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the giant squid that is seen in "Clash of the Titans" (1981) and "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" (2006)?

Answer: The Kraken

The kraken entered pop culture in the 19th century, thanks to a sonnet by Alfred Lord Tennyson. It went on to make it's film debut in the 1981 hit "Clash of the Titans". It also appeared in the second Pirates of the Caribbean film serving at the beck and call of Davy Jones. This kraken eventually devoured Captain Jack Sparrow and his ship. Jack got better, but the kraken did not.
2. Grendel is feared by everyone but which literary hero?

Answer: Beowulf

Grendel is the first of the three enemies that the hero Beowulf faces in his epic poem. Descriptions of Grendel vary from version to version, but all agree that Grendel is larger and stronger than an average man. They all also agree that he is very ugly.

There are some versions that depict Grendel as Cain, who has been hideously transformed and doomed to an eternity of torment after he slayed his brother Abel. The only person said to be unafraid of Grendel is Beowulf.
3. In which of these television programs would you find the beings known as Frost Giants?

Answer: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

In Norse mythology, every race has its place. Humans live in Midgard. Gods dwell is Asgard. And the Frost Giants occupy the icy realm of Jotunheim. They are often depicted as being the enemies of the gods. Depending on where you look, Frost Giants may look like men, they may have blue skin, or they may actually be made from ice.

They have been featured on "Thor" (2011), "The Avengers" (2012) and on the television program "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." (2014).
4. In which of the following films would you see a minotaur?

Answer: Eye of the Tiger

The Minotaur has the body of a man and the head of a bull. He is seen in "The Chronicles of Narnia" (2005), "Sinbad" (2003) and "Eye of the Tiger" (1977). This powerful creature was placed inside the Labyrinth by its designer Daedalus until it was slain by Theseus. Minotaurs appear both evil and heroic depending on the conflict at any given time.
5. What kind of being is Medusa, who is seen in "Clash of the Titans" (1981)?

Answer: Gorgon

Medusa comes from Greek mythology. She is a gorgon, who is half-snake and half-human. She has the ability to turn men into stone simply by gazing at them. The most famous of the gorgons is Medusa and her sisters, Steno and Euryale. Medusa was the only one of the trio not to have been given the gift of immortality. According to legend, Perseus defeated her with a mirrored shield and a quick beheading.

They are featured in numerous films including "The Gorgon" (1964) and "Medusa Against the Son of Hercules" (1962).
6. Which hero is credited with killing Hydra in a 1997 film?

Answer: Hercules

The Hydra is a multi-headed, dragon-like monster from Greek mythology. It was known that if you cut off one head two more would grow to take its place. Hercules kills the Hydra by cauterising the wound every time he chopped off a head. This prevented a new head from growing back.

This monster can be seen in the 2009 film "Hydra", the 1997 film "Hercules" and in the third season of "Lost" (2006).
7. Cerberus is a giant three-headed dog that is found in which of the following films?

Answer: Hercules

Cerberus is a giant, three-headed dog who guards the entrance to the underworld. Cerberus is very good at making sure that no one gets in or out of Hell without him allowing them to. Hercules last labor was to capture this beast. Cerberus is featured in Disney's movie "Hercules" (1997).

A three-headed dog is also in the very first "Harry Potter" film (2001). Hagrid called him Fluffy, and all that was needed to subdue him was a little peaceful music.
8. Trolls, as are seen in "The Lord of the Rings" (2001) and "Trollhunter" (2010), are often thought to die if they are exposed to which of the following things?

Answer: Sunlight

Trolls are one of the most popular creatures in Norse and Scandinavian folklore. There is not a lot of agreement as to what a troll actually looks like. Some folks believe them to be large monsters who tower over humans while others think they look like an ordinary person.

But in spite of the disagreement over what they look like, most people agree that trolls are dangerous creatures who often live in remote areas of the world. Some believe that sunlight can turn them to stone.
9. In which of the following films would you be likely to see a unicorn?

Answer: "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone"

The unicorn is one of the most popular mythological creatures. They are depicted as being graceful, beautiful, and capable of healing the sick and the injured. Traditionally, only pure and uncorrupted people, such as virgin maidens are capable of meeting a unicorn. Two films that feature unicorns are "The Last Unicorn" (1982) and "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" (2001).
10. Firenze is a character in "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" (2001) and is which of the following types of creatures?
