3. Which 1932 horror movie was partly used as inspiration for Zippy the Pinhead?

Answer: Freaks

"Freaks" (1932) was an MGM movie directed by Tod Browning and starring Schlitzie Surtees, American sideshow entertainer and actor. Schlitzie was born with microcephaly and bears a striking resemblance to Zippy. "Freaks" used circus and sideshow performers with actual deformities and was not very well received as it was deemed too shocking for audiences.

5. Even his taste in food is unconventional. Zippy's favourite food is Ding Dongs with taco sauce. Which well known company manufactures Ding Dongs?

Answer: Hostess

Hostess Brands are responsible for Ding Dongs. They formerly produced Twinkies, but have since discontinued the brand.

Drake's Cakes produce a similar product to Hostess, but their product is named "Ring Dings". Due to conflicts with Hostess regarding Ding Dong's similarity in name and actual product to Drake's Ring Dings, Hostess are not allowed to use the "Ding Dong" name in places that stock Ring Dings.

Answer: False

Zippy's town is called Dingburg, Maryland. Skeeball is available 24-hours a day and the deity of choice is the giant Muffler Man. Let us not forget the giant Dachshund head on a pole at the edge of town with whom Zippy discusses all the important things in life.

7. Many unusual and colourful characters populate the "Zippy" cartoon strip. Which of the following is NOT one of them?

Answer: Ralph

Mr. The Toad is a bully who hates everyone, and not always for a good reason. In some cases it is just because he enjoys hating them. He is an actual large, mean, bipedal toad in a suit.

Shelf-Life is a wheeler-dealer. According to the comic strip's creator, he is a poor man's Donald Trump and is liked by only Zippy.

Griffy is Zippy's "alter-ego". He is the logic to Zippy's more unorthodox thinking. He created and heads up the "Stupidity Patrol" who seek out "deviants", which are people who think differently to him.

Ralph is just a very nice name.

Answer: Muu-muu and topknot

Zippy is usually depicted wearing a yellow muu-muu/clown suit with red polka dots. He also wears white puffy clown shoes and the top knot on his head is tied with a ribbon. Depending on the context of the weekly strip, he does occasionally change into other attire e.g. superhero costume, toga.

9. Zippy often talks to giant figures that advertise outside of businesses. The one he talks to the most is "Doggie", a huge dachshund head mounted on a pole. Is "Doggie" based on any form of advertising in reality?

Answer: Yes

Doggie is actually based on a giant Dachshund head on a pole. The Doggie Diner is a small fast food chain based in San Francisco and Oakland. The head is seven feet tall and made of fibreglass. Originally designed in the 1960s, it has had many different incarnations and is now based on a median strip near the San Francisco zoo and is an official San Francisco landmark.
