Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Scrooge" (1970)

Answer: Albert Finney

Finney portrayed a singing, dancing Scrooge in this musical adaptation with a Leslie Bricusse score. Directed by Ronald Neame, it also starred Alec Guinness, Edith Evans and Kenneth More.
2. "Scrooge" (1951)

Answer: Alistair Sim

Also known as "A Christmas Carol", in this British production, Sim's characterization of Scrooge was laudable. Also, the death of Jacob Marley is dramatized, and the part of Scrooge's housekeeper, Mrs. Dilber (Kathleen Harrison), is expanded.
3. "A Christmas Carol: The Musical" (2004)

Answer: Kelsey Grammer

Another musical adaptation, this TV movie has a score by Alan Menken and Lynn Ahrens and was produced by Hallmark Entertainment. It has several notable co-stars including Jennifer Love Hewitt and Jason Alexander.
4. "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol" (1962)

Answer: Jim Backus

This was one of the first animated adaptations produced. Jim Backus, who was probably best known for his role on the TV show "Gilligan's Island" as the millionaire Thurston Howell III, provided Mr. Magoo's vocalizations. An all-star cast included Jack Cassidy, Morey Amsterdam, Royal Dano, Les Tremayne, Paul Frees and Jane Kean. Also a musical, it featured a score by Bob Merrill and Jule Styne.
5. "A Christmas Carol" (1938)

Answer: Reginald Owen

Some film buffs consider Owen's portrayal of Scrooge to be one of the most definitive. It is also alleged that the Disney character of Scrooge McDuck was based on this characterization and appearance. It is also notable that three members of an acting family appeared in this version Gene, Kathleen and June Lockhart as, respectively, Bob Cratchit, Mrs. Cratchit and Belinda, their daughter.
6. "Scrooge" (1935)

Answer: Seymour Hicks

Hicks, a Shakespearean trained actor, played a very sour and avaricious miser. This production was the first sound film of this drama produced that has survived to this day. In it, the ghosts who visit Scrooge, with the exception of the Ghost of Christmas Present, are not actually seen on camera.
7. "A Christmas Carol" (1984)

Answer: George C. Scott

Scott received an Emmy nomination for his role as the famous miser in this made-for-TV production. Clive Donner directed this version and had been a film editor on the 1951 theatrical movie. One added cast member who is not usually seen in "A Christmas Carol" was Scrooge's father, Silas (Nigel Davenport), portrayed as a very stern and aloof parent.
8. "A Christmas Carol" (1999)

Answer: Patrick Stewart

A made-for-TV movie, it was based on Stewart's one-man stage production. However this dramatization has a full cast. The setting is much more grim that some of the previous versions.
9. "The Stingiest Man in Town" (1978)

Answer: Walter Matthau

A Rankin/Bass animated musical production, it was based on an earlier TV special that had starred Basil Rathbone as Scrooge. In the cartoon, Matthau lent his gravelly voice to the characterization of Scrooge. The score was written by Fred Spielman and Janice Torre. It also had an all-star cast including Dennis Day, Tom Bosley, Robert Morse and Theodore Bikel.
10. "A Christmas Carol" (2009)

Answer: Jim Carrey

Another animated adaptation, Jim Carrey provided the voice for Scrooge (at all ages) and all the spirits that visit Scrooge. Some critics like this version for its production values, but also found fault with what they perceived as it being too grim. Also providing character vocalizations are Gary Oldman, Colin Firth and Cary Elwes, among others.
